Como, Perry - Once Upon A Time Lyrics

Once upon a time,
A girl with moonlight in her eyes,
Put her hand in mine,
And said she loved me so . . .
But that was once upon a time,
Very long ago!

Once upon a hill,
we sat beneath the willow tree,
Counting all the stars,
And waiting for the dawn,
But that was once upon a time,
Now, the tree is gone!

How the breeze ruffled through her hair,
How we always laughed,
As though tomorrow wasn't there . . .
We were young,
And didn't have a care,
Where did it go?

Once upon a time,
The world was sweeter than we knew,
Everything was ours,
How happy we were then . . .
But, somehow, once upon a time,
Never comes again!

Como, Perry Once Upon A Time Comments
  1. L.... H....

Perry was such a wonderful, smooth, amazing talent. *This song, AND "And I love you so" {"and yes, I know how lonely life can be..."} are two of the saddest songs ever written or sung. It is best NOT to listen to them if you are prone to depression.*

  2. F.... G....

Toi, toi, seulement toi. Yesterday, today and tomorrow

  3. F.... G....

Once upon a time and still today and forever.

  4. T.... R....

I am 84. I did some of his in the 60's in as a weekender.. Still do it and a friend asked me to do this. I listened to at least 5 artists. I am still thrilled with his voice and delivery. Best in my book and I do a lot of Tony's stuff.

  5. F.... M....

It's going on 2 years and I miss my darling so very much.

  6. V.... R....

    Miss you Aaryta ....

  7. B.... B....

One of my favorites, I sure miss Mr C.

  8. G.... N....

This song reminds me of my childhood when my parents would play this stuff, this song specifically makes me cry because of all the memories that come back to me as I hear it. This song is timeless miss my childhood days 😢

  9. C.... ....

This song is so beautiful, I would love for new artist to sing this but no one would be able to sing this like Perry Como...

  10. K.... B....

His best. Fantastic voice. Wonderful musical arrangement. Beautifully expressed as only Mr C. could do it.

  11. D.... H....

On Saturday morning my grandfather would put on a record and we would listen together as he read the paper. This was one of his favorites.

  12. K.... L....

    As much as I admire Perry Como and his masterful crooning ;
Ray Bolger nails this song perfectly for me.
I was quite blown away on first hearing it.
He was an old Hollywood dancer and singer.
He was famously, the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.

  13. M.... L....

"Once upon a time the girl with moonlight in her eyes, put her hand in mine and said she loved me so, but that was once upon a time, very long ago;Once upon a hill we sat beneath the willow tree, counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn, but that was once upon a time, now the tree is gone; How the breeze ruffled through her hair, how we always laughed as  if tomorrow wasn't there, we were young and didn't have a care, where did it go?Once upon  time the world was sweeter than we knew, everything was ours, how happy we were then, but somehow once upon a time, never comes again."(Lovely interpretation by the all-time soothing voice of Perry Como.)

  14. J.... S....

Once upon a time there were real singers and real music.

  15. G.... F....

When a wonderful song and singer meet.

  16. M.... L....

To Jas. C. Mac...1977 till 2002 once upon a time will never come again, I wish you love always....

  17. P.... A....

Reminds me of my Husband Don who passed almost a year ago. True words. I miss you.

  18. N.... H....

Never tire of this song or Perry Como. Beautiful. This is music beautiful music by a wonderful person inside and out. God bless.

    N.... H....

Bobby Darin's version is very good also. You'd like it.

  19. S.... S....

“The excellent is always new...” Ralph Waldo Emerson.

  20. C.... P....

My young wife of 29 years passed away almost 2 and half years ago. Perry was her favourite and this song now has so much meaning to me.

  21. P.... O....

Just had my One leave me. Sighs. Once upon a time, the world was sweeter than I know.

  22. B.... H....

My parents loved this song back in the 50's.....knew all the words

    Here they are:

    Once upon a time,
A girl with moonlight in her eyes,
    Put her hand in mine,
And said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time,
    Very long ago!
    Once upon a hill,
we sat beneath the willow tree,
    Counting all the stars,
    And waiting for the dawn,
But that was once upon a time,
    Now, the tree is gone!
How the breeze ruffled through her hair,
    How we always laughed,
    As though tomorrow wasn't there
    We were young,
    And didn't have a care,
    Where did it go?
    Once upon a time,
The world was sweeter than we knew,
    Everything was ours,
    How happy we were then
But, somehow, once upon a time,
    Never comes again!

  23. C.... ....

Beautiful song, sung by many great singers. It was from a failed Broadway musical called All American, that starred Ray Bolger. Interestingly the play's book, or story line, was written by a then largely unknown, Mel Brooks in 1962.

  24. B.... V....

Such a great song from the good old days. I think Perry's version is the best of all of them.

  25. T.... ....

Perry Como always puts his gentle way of renditioning a song.

  26. B.... A....

*what a Handsome Man he was! Couldn't help commenting.*

  27. d.... ....

This is probably the one case where Como's version is not as good as Al Martino's.

  28. J.... M....

This is such a passionate, moving song. Yes, I fill up just thinking of my dear deceased husband and the wonderful life we had, “Once Upon a Time”! 😢💕

  29. M.... B....

I was listening a moment ago to another song by Perry Como on Youtube. The very next offering was this one – ONCE UPON A TIME. I'd not heard Perry's recording of this – and it moved me to tears. I can't say why (can't find the words). Anyway, I was poised to leave a “comment” below the video. Then I read the lead comment this day by . . .

    Darrell Shuck (2 years ago)

'Why do I keep playing this song. It makes cry every time. It's been four and half years since she went to a better place. I keep seeing her as she was . A beautiful lady inside and out. How I miss her!'

    My reply to his comment]

Reading your words Darrell and weeping with shared emotion. Tears of joy. (The best kind, right?) Thank you for eliciting so much emotion – in so few words.

My own Dad outlived my Mom by four years. They were so musical, and when she died he couldn't even LOOK-at, let alone play, the Steinway in his living room (on which he'd written hundreds of tunes). After a late-in-life stroke, reduced him to six word sentences, I was visiting the family home one night when Dad sat down at the piano for the first time in four years and . . .

I'd like to say that then-and-there he played something beautiful. He did not. He couldn't play a single one of the songs he had written -- despite my prompting him, whistling and humming his own tunes. But then . . .

Dad began to play EMBRACEABLE YOU. I knew that he and Mom loved that song -- which reached the radio during the days they were courting. I never realized until that moment just how 'organically perfect' the notes of that Gershwin tune were to my own father's psyche. He played it a second time -- slowly, tentatively, but without a mistake. I wept tears of joy – sort of like now reading your words Darrell. Thank you so much for sharing.

  30. P.... K....

I had this song on vinyl in my youth. It was fantastic then and even better now. Thank you Mr. C.

  31. L.... ....

Truly a beautiful yet sad song. Sung by a man. Perry Coma. Not of my generation. He could have been my father.....yet! I fell madly in love with him as a teen ...💖💖

  32. P.... C....

Perry Como, like Andy Williams and Jack Jones who both recorded this song - great crooners and IMO, incomparable voices that will be hard, if not impossible to replace.

  33. l.... ....

he sings this effortlessly. great voice

  34. N.... H....

Beautiful wonderful gentleman singer so humble. Beautiful song. Heart wrenching. Thank you.

  39. W.... T....

I guess for someone my age (81) this song says it all. Lost my wife of 55 years 14 months ago and "Once Upon a Time" brings back all the beautiful memories we shared. Sadly, as Perry says, once upon a time never comes again. This is for you, Dear.

    W.... T....

William Teti I’m so sorry for your loss treasure the memories that’s what helps me I’m 52 but have had much loss this song actually helps me. But it will come again have faith in that🙏🏻🥰

Mr. Tell, my dear sweet sister 82yrs. lost her husband of 55 yrs. 2 mos ago. She helped raise 4 siblings and married a wonder husband whom we all loved. My heart goes out to her as she also lost two children as well! She has one daughter and two grandkids but there is such an empty space in her heart for very long ago will always be there. Bless you for your loss and empty days you must bare! Abuela Lupe (74 yrs old)

  41. M.... D....

My goodness. As often before, Mr. C makes me doubt Bennett and Sinatra as my choice versions. A fitting orchestration and simple arrangement make the case, as well.

  42. A.... S....

THE best version of this gorgeous song. Yes, even better than Frank!

    A.... S....

    Most heartily agree!!!!

  43. M.... G....

Pure magic .....they do not write songs like it anymore but they are thee to enjoy.... Stil

  44. J.... S....

so many nice memories with this song and no one sings it better.

  45. J.... S....

every man is reminded of his lost love when listening to this great song by the gentle voice of Perry Como-

  46. r.... t....

Once upon a time there was Perry Como who enchanted us who listened.

A heart touching song one of the bestin the world, thanks for the co poser and singer

  48. N.... H....

Perry Como's version is the very best of this lovely song, in my opinion. Thanks Perry.

    N.... H....

I love it but I think al martino owned it. I feel his version is the least mentioned version

    N.... H....

I wish I still had the Recording from the Concert Chorus when they sang this for the opening of Disney World in Orlando...it would make you cry in a heartbeat...I love it...

    N.... H....

    @House Baelish I like John Gary's version

  49. K.... W....

So Beautiful alway !a favorite Thank you xx Love Perry

  50. B.... S....

Great verison of the song by Perry!Love it!

  51. D.... H....

Beautiful voice Perry Como this is one of the best versions , must listen to John Garys' verson..

  52. b.... ....

This man was the pivotal singer who cannot be forgotten. His voice will live on through the ages......

  53. T.... S....

I love this song so much. They just dont write songs like this. Or deliver vocals like this anymore. I think i was born in the wrong era. Love it.

  54. J.... P....

Perry Como's version of this song is my absolute favorite by a male singer. What I find odd is that no one has mentioned Ketty Lester's version. Yeah, it's a guy song, but it rings just as true sung by her. Give it s listen.

  55. M.... M....

Well, Heather (saw what would appear to be your 'flower name' in a comment in your "Once Upon a Summer Afternoon") I have been listening to John Gary for an hour or two as I worked and decided to check out some of your posts of other artists. I cannot fault the excellent arrangement and vocal work of Mr. Como, he's marvelous too, but I confess this is one of my all time fav songs and of course John Gary's rendition is top of my list! Something in my Irish and Scots blood (maternal side of family and paternal, respectively-from the mountains of Appalachia originally-the oldest geographical formation on the planet) just aches and thrills simultaneously to the song! Thanks once more for your post and the repartee of your responses.

    M.... M....

Ha! Yes, that's the flower :) I agree with you, as much as I love Perry and this version, John's version of almost everything is my favorite version. It's not often I don't love anything Andy Williams, sings, but after listening to John's What Now, My Love?, I thought Andy's version was an abomination. (I've got a dash of Irish and Scottish, too--maybe that explains my reaction to these songs, too :)) )

    M.... M....

I think many would be surprised to hear Andy Williams' version of any song described as an abomination, but where "What Now, My Love" (oops) is concerned, I agree! Like You, I have trouble naming one favorite artist, but in addition to the golden voices on your channel I have commented on or not yet listened to,  I must confess a powerful affinity for the more modern work of Neil Diamond's early career  (his voice is one of those that can be identified as uniquely his within a few notes, though his output has varied wildly in quality over the years) and Jackson Browne's often sorrowful but poetic songs such as "Sky Blue and Black", or "Farther On". My musical interests are wide ranging...possibly the only genres missing or almost entirely missing from my collection are rap/hip-hop and most of the 'Disco' era!Sadly I have not yet mastered the skill of assembling videos so that I may post songs to a YouTube channel but I am working on it ;^)

    M.... M....

Oh, yes, Neil Diamond's got some great songs, Cracklin' Rosie has always been a favorite. I haven't listened to much if any Jackson Browne yet. I draw the line at rap/hip-hop, too, but am quite a fan of the BeeGees, disco era included. I'll be looking forward to your videos when you do start posting them :))

    M.... M....

Forgot about the BeeGees-especially love their very first hits from late 60's/early 70's like "Gotta get a message to you" and more. It is a period in their career that many never heard-so I guess I have to say there is SOME disco I have and also liked (after all I grew up when the "roller disco" fad was in full swing! "Though I prefer the BeeGees pre-disco original version of "Jive Talking" from the LP Nights on Broadway to their version on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

  56. D.... M....

I have always loved this song. From a Google known Broadway Musical. I First heard it sung by The Lettermen.

"Come with me, I'm on my way to the stars..."

  61. N.... L....

I remember the night Perry did this song on his show; I remember thinking the lyrics didn't match the melody and that this song was "almost excellent" - and years later, it remained stuck in my head - in my memory. In college, I found myself singing it out loud as I walked between buildings on a crisp autumn day... happy and feeling it. Funny how time colors one's perspective... turned out to be near the top of my list of favorites. Perry was always my hero - the singing barber.

  62. d.... ....

Best by far is Dylan's at Bennett's 90th b-day celebration.

  63. J.... M....

Once upon a time are the first words of many stories I Heard when I was a child.   Very good to hear as once upon a time I was a child who played with my Sister and went to school to learn. Very good song to hear now everything is a wild rush and there are important issues to consider as terrorism and so many new dangers.  But we must go on living despite them all.

  64. J.... M....

I like this nostalgic song.  What it says is true namely what happened in our distant past can never be recovered or recreated. Something else may take its palce but it is different.  And it is good to remember when we are no longer Young we cannot do what we could have done when Young but didn't for some reason. So we must live and act our age.

  65. h.... ....

Primo. Perry, Perry, Perry, you were the one who made me, at age 5, fall in love with music, and you. As always, this is perfect.

  66. d.... s....

Why do I keep playing this song. It makes cry every time. It's been four and half years since she went to a better place. I keep seeing her as she was . A beautiful lady inside and out. How I miss her!

    d.... s....

    Now you made me cry....

    d.... s....

How blessed you were to have a love like her...❤

    d.... s....

So sorry for your loss. You will be together again.God Bless.

    d.... s....

darrell shuck, so sorry for your loss.

    d.... s....

I miss my darling Lynne every day, every night, ... but we must go on. we must finish our race and learn more and more to do GOD's will. she is far better off NOW in the place GOD has prepared in Heaven.
she loved Jesus, she loved me, she loved others. WHAT MORE CAN I SAY ? she was/is a treasure, my Lynne Suzanne, my partner, my friend, my soulmate.

  67. V.... ....

Great version of a great song by a great singer. I always thought this song, written by Adams and Strouse, was similar both musically and lyrically, to En Ce Temps La', written and sung by Charles Trenet 10 years earlier.

  68. J.... K....

Dylan did a great take for Tony.

  69. S.... A....

it's that longing for something wonderful again. Great song. My vote is for Tony Bennett and Bob Dylan

  70. D.... F....

    Como was the best.

  71. m.... d....

All the singers mentioned are good ,most really good but do yourself a favor and listen to John Gary's version it's breathtaking

    m.... d....

I agree with you, Mike, John Gary's version is breathtaking. Thanks for watching and commenting :))

    m.... d....

The song is so great that all recordings of it are great - but Mr. C. does it best for me! Don't forget Eddie Fisher's original recording of it...

    m.... d....

the original recording would be the Broadway cast album, with Ray Bolger and Eileen Herlie, but yes, Eddie is splendid, along with Martino, Gary, Perry and more

    m.... d....

    I took your suggestion...and found John Gary's appalling. :-(

  72. C.... W....

I've listened to all versions of this song, and I think the Andy Williams one is by far the best, his range is far superior to all the other singers, and his breath control is fantastic, also just the quality of his voice is like velvet.......xxx

    C.... W....

It's tough to beat Andy when it comes to almost any song, he's just phenomenal! Perry is right up there with him, at least for me. Thanks for watching and commenting :))

    C.... W....

I love Andy Williams' voice and many songs. And some songs I only want to hear him sing. This song is one that I only want to hear Perry's version. Love them both.

    C.... W....

    I rather like Sinatra's version.

  73. T.... P....

I've heard all the greats sing this song and I give them all a ten...Bennett, Sinatra, Jack Jones, Bobby Darin and Como are all excellent versions, although I did not like the Sinatra unnecessary ending of Once Upon a time..never ends again in recitative. The encapsulating verse in this song is "Where did it go?" It sums up the entire song and must be presented with passion and remorse. The pro's have done a great job on this and that is because they take it upon themselves to "own" the song. It is one of my all-time favorites no matter who is singing it. There are portions of it which are done better by some. It is a wonderful song to sing but it is not an easy one to perform. My thoughts are "counting all the stars" is to be sung in a sort of magical way; "now the tree is gone" should portray finality", "how the breeze" etc should place a smile of fond remembrance on his face indicating he wishes he could return to that wonderful time that he misses so much, and finally "the world was sweeter than we knew" should stretch out a soft yet passionate emphasis on the sweetness that the artist would gladly welcome back into his life.

    T.... P....

All of these, Perry Como did, beautifully! The best!

  74. G.... V....

    Salutations cordiales.

i once had a girl friend, a wonderful smile made of pearls, and skin like a setting sun, her hair was black as raven wing. I could stair in to those eyes of hers for hours on end, till i siad that poynet fraise "i love you" but now i just sit and wipe my eyes removing the tears of joy, of sorrow and regreat that i lost my first love. Now i live in hope listing to this song that i can kindle a love like that again. A love that was once upon a time.

Andy Williams comes a close second, but that last bar ruins it completely. Perry Como owns this.

Eddie Fisher is tied for the best rendition (recorded by EVERYBODY) of that beautiful song. I even sang it!

  90. S.... ....

This song always reminds me how good America was 50 years ago.

    S.... ....

america was pretty dark and racist back then, its much better now statistically. Smart phones and the way the internet/news works now would make you think otherwise though....

    S.... ....

Stokjockey me too we will never get that back the world was so simple

    S.... ....

You know, this is not the song that should remind you of "how good America was". The song that you are thinking of is "Those Were the Days". Mr. Archie Bunker.

    S.... ....

    Not only America, the world.

Amen to that!  These songs are evocative and often, too often heartbreaking reminders of love lost.

I'm 67 at the time I am writing this. I don't won't to sound like an old codger, but, 'once upon a time the world was sweeter than you know everything was ours how happy we Corinthians were then.' Young ones make your life joyful don't fall for the socialist lies of today. Take the narrow road. Corinthians 15:1-4.

Best version is by Jack Jones. Give it a listen.

    I agree with Mr. Tiliis....

Best redition is Frank Sinatra who sings it like he lived it.

"Once upon a time the world was sweeter than we knew". What a wonderfully poignant line. How many times I have thought the "grass is greener across the road" only to get there and find out it is not. Enjoy what you have...your spouse, your children, the joy of waking up to a sunny day, or a rainy day. We all have problems, but there is happiness all around us. Look for it. Embrace it.

Years ago, when I lived in Washington, D.C., Mr. Como gave a concert in that town. The newspaper advertisements simply read "Ladies and Gentlemen...Mr. Perry Como." I have always felt that was quite appropriate.

I like John Gary's version best!
