Como, Perry - I'm Always Chasing Rainbows Lyrics

At the end of the rainbow there's happiness
and to find it how often I've tried
but my life is a race, just a wild goose chase
and my dreams have all been denied!

Why have I always been a failure?
What can the reason be?
I wonder if the world's to blame?
I wonder if it could be me?

I'm always chasing rainbows
watching clouds drifting by!
My schemes are just like all of my dreams
ending in the sky!

Some fellows look and find the sunshine
I always look and find the rain!
Some fellows make a winning sometime
I never even make a gain!

Believe me...

I'm always chasing rainbows
waiting to find a little blue bird in vain!

(Rainbows seem to fade away!)

This was my Uncle Pino’s ‘life song’....it was playing on the old juke box in his Tavern & he said to me, ‘that’s my song son, your Uncle is always chasing a rainbow...but never catches one.’

    Bravo Mr. Como.

This is our graduation song in high school (University of San Carlos, Girl's High School) at Cebu City, Philippines!

Perry Como understood his own skills as a singer perfectly. When he was 80, he was still singing beautifully because he didn't try to do more than his voice could handle.  Like many of his colleagues who became famous in the 30's and 40's, he could put all the needed emotion into a song.  In addition, he could convince you there were powerful emotions behind his singing while remaining technically very understated. That is a rare skill.  A classic performer with sensitivity.

+gnirol A wonderful insight into the gift of Perry Como to all of us. Thank you!

This is a Chopin melody from impromptu n# 66

Yup.  Lots of people who were young in the 30's and 40's didn't realize that the big band leaders and pop singers they adored were often inspired by classical music with they arranged and had lyrics added to.  In the case of instrumentalists, they were often classically trained.  I remember playing an easy version of the famous, famous theme (figure skaters, anything but this and anything from "Carmen" as your musical accompaniment, please!) from Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto.  My mother shouts from the kitchen, "That's 'Full Moon and Empty Arms.'"  I shout back, "No, it's Rachmaninov!"  Stop!  You're both right.  It's two, two, two works in one!  (If you get that reference, you've been into pop culture for a long, long time.)

+gnirol Another musical piece many people have heard and don't realize its actual origin is Liszt " Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2". Scores of "Loony Tunes" fans have heard it in the cartoons and don't know they are actually hearing classical music.

Technically this song was originally written in 1919 (the lyrics that is) and performed by Harry Carroll. This was just picked up by the popular big band artists, though Judy Garland delivers it beautifully. I wish she sang it in its entirety though.

    this version is 1945.
it was written in 1917. recorded in 1918 by Charles Harrison, vocals.

"I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" is a popular Vaudeville song. The music is credited to Harry Carroll, although the melody is actually adapted from Fantaisie-Impromptu by Frédéric Chopin. The lyrics were written by Joseph McCarthy, and the song was published in 1917 and introduced in the Broadway show Oh, Look! which opened in March, 1918.[1] The song was sung in the show by The Dolly Sisters.[1] Judy Garland sang it in the 1941 film Ziegfeld Girl. It was subsequently sung by Jack Oakie in the 1944 film The Merry Monahans and was again featured in the 1945 film The Dolly Sisters (1945 in film), where it was sung by John Payne.[1] It was also included for part of the run (and in the cast album) of the 1973 revival of Irene.
** it was not sung by Debbie Reynolds on stage, only in the recording. It was cut out, but when Jane Powell replaced her on stage, they put it back in.

Beautiful. I'm going to start listening more to Perry Como. Where are the singers like him today? There is so much trash out there IMO. By the way, the song is not depressing. It expresses a profound human emotion, which by the inspiration of grace and good will, can be worked through, and opened up to the truth of what life is really all about.

In fondo all’arcobaleno c’è la felicità
e ho spesso cercato di trovarla
ma la mia vita è solo una dura rincorsa
e tutti i miei sogni sono svaniti.
    Perché ho sempre fallito?
    Quale ragione può esserci?
    Cerco sempre l’arcobaleno,
guardando tra le nubi che si diradano
    ...

  12. V.... ....

    ...
i miei progetti sono come i miei sogni, finiscono in cielo.
Qualcuno guarda il cielo e trova raggi di sole
io guardo sempre il cielo e trovo la pioggia!
    Qualcuno vince, almeno qualche volta
    io ho sempre perso.
    Credimi, cerco sempre l’arcobaleno
guardando fra le nubi che si diradano.
    Cerco sempre un arcobaleno
    aspettando invano una piccola rondine.

im sorry it just doesn't feel right to not credit the original composer Chopin for the beautiful melodies used here.

I was moved within just the first 10 seconds of his singing. Thank you for posting!
