Colter Wall - Thirteen Silver Dollars Lyrics

It was a cold and cruel evening
Sneaking up on Speedy Creek
Found myself asleep and in the snow
One or two odd reasons
I ain't too proud to repeat
For now we'll say I had no place to go
There was a rustle and a humming
Just hauling down the street
I drew myself up from my icy bed
Painted on that shiny car the letters 'RCM and P'
I can feel a little aching in my head

And then out jumps this old boy
About twice the size of me
He asked me for my name and where I dwell
I just looked him in the eye
And sang 'Blue Yodel Number 9'
He didn't catch the reference, I could tell

Then the old, familiar click
In the handcuffs bind and grip
Should have left me in the snow, where I laid

He just laughed and touched his gun
And turned to me and he said
Son, I bet you don't own a damn thing
To your name

Well, I got my health
My John B Stetson
Got a bottle full of baby's bluebird wine
And I left my stash
Somewhere down in Preston
Along with thirteen silver dollars and my mind

Well, I got my health
My John B Stetson
Got me a bottle full of baby's bluebird wine
And I left my stash
Somewhere down in Preston
Along with thirteen silver dollars and my mind

    F.... ....

Baby Bluebird Wine is a subtle reference in country music (google it). Also, 'Blue Yodel No. 9' is a reference to a classic 1930's song by Jimmie Rogers about the Po-lice a comin' along while he was standin' on the corner meaning no harm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BFbY9Vw8DM Colter is a clever song writer along with that amazing voice.

Just me or is anyone else having mixed feelings about Canadians being better country singers than Americans right now?

    S.... T....

Americans have become too obsessed with fake patriotism, xenophobia, millions singing about the working class, and tractors. We're getting middle-class republican kids that have never worked a day in their life. They're nothing like the real outlaws, people that struggled just to survive. It's the same with all the modern facsimiles of the blues. You have to live this shit or you just have manufactured pop garbage.

    S.... T....

If you look at American country music before and after 9/11 you'll see a dramatic shift in what the subject matter of songs were. Before 9/11, songs could still be used to sing about poverty, discrimination, alcoholism, depression, heartbreak, drug abuse, and hard lives. After 9/11, criticizing the US became no longer in vogue. Now it's singing about how proud you are to be American, how great everything is, how country boys and girls are the real heart of America and being rural is the thing to be. Let's not forget that stupid hypocrisy awhile back of country stars putting a lot of electronic, pop, hip-hop, and even rap influences into their music while a song like "Oldtown Road" wasn't on the charts cuz it wasn't "country enough". The definition of a fucking country song nowadays is "Do you have an accent that marks you from Tennessee or Georgia? Do you have an acoustic guitar? You're country." Bunch of brainless bullshit, is what it is.
