Colter Wall - Bob Fudge Lyrics

My name is Bob Fudge I was born in Texas
Lampasas county back during the war
Small pox and Comanches took most of my family
Left my poor mother, my brothers and me

So I headed North to ride for the blockers
They were contracting herds on the Montana range
In the Spring of the year 82 we left old Lampasas
With 2,000 steers for the Little Bighorn

Crossing our trails there were many great rivers
All to be crossed not a bridge would we find
In the cold rolling waters and the wild punching cattle
There was many a young man took leave of his life

Well we crossed at Doan's store into the Indian nation
Saw the blood on the rocks where those cowboys had died
Then it's on Fort Dodge on the Arkansas River
Where gamblers and whores all welcomed us there

And the great snowcapped peaks are on our left side now
For many miles in the great silent land
When I first saw Montana, I knew I would love her
I would ride her great plains til the end of my days

But she's all cut and dry now and the trails are all gone
I've been in Yellowstone Park in an automobile
But I can still see em swimming, boys I can still hear em running
I came off of the trails when cowboys was king

My name is Bob Fudge I died in Montana

  1. O.... B....

Montana should chance its name to Mull-tana as a homage to this song.

  2. D.... B....

The way he carries you through the story with such simple but vivid thoughts and words. Simply Beautiful.

  3. K.... P....

As a Montana resident this song hits deep

  4. B.... M....

Once a cowboy on the Wyoming plains, I can tell you..... there's nothing like pushing that herd through the mountains.
When a head would break runnin, and I got the whistle from my Pops to run it down..... that's where boys become men.
I was a few generations late to that party... but I got a taste of it before its no longer here.

  5. C.... M....

Bob Fudges soul lives on in Montana, but Colter Wall helps his soul live her in Texas. A true story teller, I’ll tell you what!

Bob Fudge was a real person, a cowboy from Texas who spent his life on the Montana range on horseback, driving cattle, the song is biographical ...and it’s awesome

I lived in Montana for 2 years and I loved every moment when I lived there

  18. m.... ....

The name Bob Fudge is still famous here in the stories passed down by the old cowboys

    m.... ....

    Care to share one?

    m.... ....

I dont recall any specifically, but I did some work for an old cowboy near Gillette WY, who knew a great deal of the history of the area. His name was Fritzie Rehbien, he was from Biddle, MT. He said many of th old cow trails came through that area, around Sundance, WY and Broadus, MT. There are many books written about those men and their stories.

    m.... ....

    @modernarborsolutions Thanks for sharing!

  19. G.... M....

Great tune. Wonder if Colter likes Stan Rogers? None of my friends in the U.S. like him.

  20. J.... K....

This is one voice that's in a category by itself... re-creating an entire genre thought to be dead. He'll be a legend.

A Colter Wall song I didn't know. Let me stop whatever I'm doing, pour myself some... mmmh, some Rum will do, and listen to it a couple of times while looking in the night.

His voice sounds like a thunder, I enjoy his style. Greetings from Brazil my friend

  43. C.... S....

Thanks to my son Flint for sending me a link to this song!
A great voice. A great story.
For a song to tell a story, instead of repeating a few words over and over, is resfreshing!
    A new fan!

  44. N.... l....

Better than the original in my opinion. Has more emotion and it doesn't feel as rushed as the original. Kick ass. Fantastic Colter. Huge fan and hope to see you live one day. Listening in Colorado!

    Went out on a bridge
    Down in Chehalis
    And clutching his bible
    And a letter from her
    Fell into the river
    Pity no one was there
    No angels in the air
    And the morning paper ran
    One more suicide
    His mama stayed by
    The river side
    Down in Chehalis
    And clutching her bible
    And a letter from him
    Fell into crying
    Pity no one was there
    No angels in the air
    And the morning paper ran
    One more suicide
    Pity no one was there
    No angels in the air
    And the morning paper ran

    One more suicide

    Who you rippin' off Colter?

  52. A.... ....

This song paints a picture that most songs just cant.

  53. t.... f....

Yeah, it's a cover. But I feel like his covers are so different from the originals, it's not like hes trying to steal someone's song. Hes paying homage to his inspiration but putting his on touch on them. And you're free to disagree, but imo most of his covers are better than the originals anyhow.

  54. A.... ....

Oooh this song has fat dripping off of it love the tone and sway Bob fudge

  55. m.... ....

    It's relaxing

  56. T.... L....

God. I fucking love this. There are artists I like. waylon, merle, cash, the eagles, Allman brothers, etc and others that are really, really good. But there are other people who just connect to you on a whole other, deeper level. Townes, guy Clark, dylan, blaze Foley, gram parsons, Mickey newberry, kristofferson, prine. Colter Wall is becoming one of those to me. Give me colter wall over tyler childers and his new pop album any day.

  57. r.... w....

    Classic Western ballad. Love it!

  58. P.... ....

"When I first saw montana" best part gotta yell it everytime

    P.... ....

Being born and raised in Montana, right near the little bighorn area, I love the line too, and can totally relate. "I'll ride her great ranges, till the end of my days" cant see myself ever leaving her big sky

  59. H.... D....

Thought this song was boring at first, but dang its good. This guy cant make a bad song

    H.... D....

    It's a cover.

    H.... D....

@truth finder I was stoned when I wrote that lol

    H.... D....

    🤣🤣🤣

  60. J.... T....

I’ve heard Ian Tyson’s and one other version of Bob Fudge, this is by far and away the best, it’s haunting and it stirs the soul, like one other viewer said, it makes me lonesome for a time I never knew and a place I’ve never seen, awesome job Colter.

    J.... T....

Only Colter to make us feel like this

    J.... T....

I like both versions . Ian's ending might be just a bit better but they're both great.

  61. C.... M....

The beginning sounds like Dylan’s “Masters of War”...but good anyhow

  62. A.... S....

Amazing song, as a born a raised Texan that moved to the mountains and works on ranches, it really hits home.

  63. K.... L....

This song gives me chills. Thank you Colter Wall, for sharing your voice with us. You surely will go down in music history, and your career just started. I can’t wait to hear what you have next in store for us.

This might be my new favorite. Love the feeling the tone and the sound gives me. Pure and raw. Really wish I could have experienced this countries sights and landscape before it was ruined. This song gives me a feeling I can’t put into words. Really really wish I could go back 150 years and live there to see what it was like.

    Z.... W....

    Honestly it isnt all destroyed

    Z.... W....

There is still untouched beauty in the wild Colorado Mountins and Badlands of Arizona

    Also smallpox and Comanches

  66. R.... S....

  67. S.... C....

I live 20 minutes away from lampasas the trail in this song is the great Western trail if you look on a map the i-35 in Texas that runs north south from Oklahoma to San Antonio is the Chisholm trail they turned it into a freeway lol

  68. T.... J....

I can definitely tell you're getting older from the sound of your voice & still enjoy every song you do. Keep it up and hope you come to Oregon sometime, Id go see you perform in a heart beat.

  69. o.... ....

    Great song, better book.

  70. T.... G....

This is real country music right here and is the kinda music that needs to be on country radio stations not that fake country shit

  71. A.... A....

How in the world can you NOT like this. My favorite singer. Deployed and your music is freaking epic.,Wyoming boy love it all I can see riding on a cattle drive with this playing as a theme song. Thank you Mr. Wall for making such great music it hits my soul.,

  72. S.... ....

country blues, whats better than this! the piano at 2:45 gives me chills every time! reminds of Louisiana for some reason.

  73. P.... ....

Ian tyson sang this way better this is one song colter shouldn't have recorded

  74. R.... a....

HOLY SHIT. Why did I wait weeks to listen to this? Absolutely beautiful.

    R.... a....

Right I did the same thing and I’m so disappointed in myself.

  75. P.... C....

    Awesome!!

  76. N.... ....

I am so dearly in love with the stories you tell of the prairies. I long to live in the times you sing of. I hope to meet you one day Colter, one cowboy to another.

  77. M.... N....

fell in love in the first 5 seconds, you're just awesome Colter. :/

Saw him perform this in Copenhagen. It was an instant favourite. Awesome that he recorded it and put it out. Come back to Scandinavia soon!

  80. m.... ....

Canada...the true home of traditional American music!!

  81. .... ....

Love your works Mr Wall!!!!! This song is fantastic. Been getting a listening once or twice a day.

  82. M.... ....

I love this song. Makes me think of hiking through the Yosemite National Park. Smelling nature, seeing wild deer, wolves, snow, and the sudden but lasting realization of how insignificant all of our individual problems are.

  83. G.... E....

How do people dislike this it’s actually music for a change

  84. D.... M....

Just saw him in July. He came down to the bar we were at after the show. Got to meet him and his band. And a great time was had by all...

  85. W.... N....

"The trails are all gone. I've been to Yellowstone park in an automobile".
I feel that line. I missed out on the good ole days that came before me. Visited Yellowstone a few times. I don't really enjoy it. People piling out of tour buses to circle around a bear on the side of the road and take pictures.

    W.... N....

@Jayvey Airson I never thought I'd see a strawman fallacy actually used but there we go.
So from your point of view, correct me if I'm wrong, personal choice does not matter at all. And, by your logic, we should submit ourselves to A.I, because that would be what is best for the human race. No more wars, no more starvation, nothing but a boring life filled with convenience and no reason to live.

    W.... N....

If you're ever up there again, forget Yellowstone and go wander the Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness in Shoshone National Forest. The National Parks are very tightly controlled due to the number of visitors, the National Forests are a chance to experience the nation as it once was.

    W.... N....

Then go into the backcountry of Yellowstone ... and you’ll get away from all the tourists and you’ll be on the trails... lol

    W.... N....

You’ve just gotta find a new Yellowstone.

    W.... N....

You gotta get in the backcountry and get away from the crowds

  86. S.... J....

Might be my favorite Colter record so far.

  87. G.... N....

I can't stop listening to this song... my favorite of his

  88. J.... B....

    damn this is good

  89. W.... U....

This song makes me wanna move to Montana

    W.... U....

I have always had a love for the west and the cattle industry and this song takes you so intimately through both. I may romance the life a little more than I should but in just a few month my new wife and I will be moving from North Dakota to Montana to chase the dream of making a life horseback with the view of cattle on big untouched country. "When I first saw Montana, I knew I would love her, I would ride her great ranges till the end of my days" that hits so hard.

    W.... U....

It's a hard life but it is beautiful

    W.... U....

This place is hauntingly beautiful. I won't ever, ever leave. I'll die in Montana.

    W.... U....

Dandy Reiner Aye Montana is my home and always will be, it’s the last best place in the United States

  90. B.... K....

I can't get over how great all of his songs are.

  91. C.... G....

Is he singing differently in this song? It sounds less like himself but sounds more convincing as the character.

    C.... G....

Hes covering an Ian tyson song from the album Live at Longview. In the beginning before Ian sings the song he details where the song came from. An old western book called Bob Fudge that someone had left on his amplifier after a show.

    C.... G....

@MarkMurczek Gotta love a new western singer covering an old western singer who was singing about an old western book.

    C.... G....

@Willlie Nellson I think he also covered one of yours too. Red headed stranger. :)

    C.... G....

    He never sings like himself

    C.... G....

@MarkMurczek Yes he did. For old WB

  92. P.... K....

We don't deserve this beautiful 5:23 song

  93. Y.... D....

if they ever remake o brother, where art thou he needs to be a star

  94. L.... T....

Song of the year, no contest. It’s crazy what this song makes me feel I can’t even explain it. I get goosebumps everytime I hear “when I first saw Montana” and the drums and strings hit

    L.... T....

Logan Townsend *top of my lungs* I knew I would love her

    L.... T....

Dude. I felt the same thing. The chemistry with the pauses and then the strings and drums hitting right after with the tone that they have just sends chills to my spine. Love this song so much. Colter continues to amaze me with his music. Finally real country music again. Started listening to him in early in late 18 and have been hooked ever since.

    L.... T....

Logan Townsend gives me the DAC “The Ride” goosebumps.

    L.... T....

As a Montana boy myself, it hits hard

  95. T.... *....

He's been good for a while now, but the overall sound of this tune has me shivering with expectation.....damn fine music.... cheers friends

  96. S.... M....

Colter Wall! I've seen you both times you've been in Vancouver Canada. Please know that your music keeps me going, and inspires me to learn all of your songs on guitar! I would love the opportunity to even shake your hand

  97. R.... R....

    Incredible

  98. B.... ....

The way he goes about maintaining that aerie tone, with the band backing him up could give you chills in a heat wave.

  99. R.... S....

Colter, we love you down here in Louisiana. Your a breath of fresh air in music.
