Collins, Judy - When I Go Lyrics

Come, lonely hunter, chieftain and king, I will fly like the falcon when I go
Bear me my brother under your wing, I will strike fell like lightnin' when I go

I will bellow like the thunder drum, invoke the storm of war
A twistin' pillar spun of dust and blood up from the prairie floor
I will sweep the foe before me like a gale out on the snow
And the wind will long recount the story, reverence and glory, when I go

Spring, spirit dancer, nimble and thin, I will leap like coyote when I go
Tireless entrancer, lend me your skin, I will run like the gray wolf when I go

I will climb the rise at daybreak, I will kiss the sky at noon
Raise my yearnin' voice at midnight to my mother in the moon
I will make the lay of long defeat and draw the chorus slow
I'll send this message down the wire and hope that someone wise is listenin' when I go

And when the sun comes trumpets from his red house in the east
He will find a standin' stone where long I chanted my release
He will send his mornin' messenger to strike the hammer blow
And I will crumble down uncountable in showers of crimson rubies when I go

Sigh, mournful sister, whisper and turn, I will rattle like dry leaves when I go
Stand in the mist where my fire used to burn, I will camp on the night breeze when I go

And should you glimpse my wand'rin form out on the borderline
Between death and resurrection and the council of the pines
Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so
All your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me when I go

Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so
All your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me when I go

Wille sounds so good on this song. He and Judy did a fantastic job, and I never tire of listening to it. The song is a masterpiece, and they are fully up to the task of making it come alive.

anyone know that dave wanted to become a female? Look it up

  4. d.... ....

Dave once said he wrote this song for his mother, who was a evangelist and did not approve of his choice of profession, but by the time he had finished it her dementia had progressed to the point she could not appreciate it. Pete and Maura Kennedy also have wonderful version.

Just found this through Collins' new record. It belongs with the greats. She and Willie give it a perfect reading.

A song for all the Native American P.O.W.s who are buried in unmarked graves around the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. We will Create this Healing Temple for you, and for you children and relations who still walk this land, we will take back the Fort, and we will create The International Native American Memorial for you.Come, lonely hunter, chieftain and kingI will fly like the falcon when I goBear me my brother under your wingI will strike fell like lightning when I goI will bellow like the thunder drum, invoke the storm of warA twisting pillar spun of dust and blood up from the prairie floorI will sweep the foe before me like a gale out on the snowAnd the wind will long recount the story, reverence and glory, when I goSpring, spirit dancer, nimble and thinI will leap like coyote when I goTireless entrancer, lend me your skinI will run like the gray wolf when I goI will climb the rise at daybreak, I will kiss the sky at noonRaise my yearning voice at midnight to my mother in the moonI will make the lay of long defeat and draw the chorus slowI'll send this message down the wire and hope that someone wise is listening when I goAnd when the sun comes, trumpets from his red house in the eastHe will find a standing stone where long I chanted my releaseHe will send his morning messenger to strike the hammer blowAnd I will crumble down uncountable in showers of crimson rubies when I goSigh, mournful sister, whisper and turnI will rattle like dry leaves when I goStand in the mist where my fire used to burnI will camp on the night breeze when I goAnd should you glimpse my wandering form out on the borderlineBetween death and resurrection and the council of the pinesDo not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me soAll your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me when I go

I truly cannot listen to this song and not tear up both for the loss of such a talent but the emotions this song evokes is so powerful.

just found this cover of Dave Carter's amazing gorgeous phenomenal "When I Go", and I agree with everyone posting that this is a wonderful version. Also please do check out Dave Carter and Tracy Grammar's recordings..they are as beautiful as this song.

Dave Carter's 2002 passing was not only premature and unexpected--but quite possibly foretold by this song--the first song on his first album. He was one of the very few songwriters to qualify as a prophet in my book. They have many fine records. Please, without delay, avail yourself of the entire Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer catalog--not a slack song across those first 5 albums. Proud to have known him and call him a friend and influence.

    You speak wisdom.

    HAVE HIS CD.

  15. K.... M....

I am totally BLOWN AWAY to learn that Willie Nelson and Judy Collins have recorded a performance of Dave Carter's "When I Go", originally written in Portland, Oregon and released in 1996 on a CD of the same name. I was fortunate to see/hear Dave sing this, backed up by the MARVELOUS Tracy Grammar, more than once. This song - both the instrumental part and the lyrics - will stay with you forever, once you hear them. Dave Carter, sadly, left the planet just when he was being discovered. This particular CD was award-winning. Dave Carter was phenomenal, a genius. Check out Dave Carter, and Tracy, online. She is still touring and creating wonderful music. Kudos Willie and Judy for recording this song and bringing Dave's fantastic "When I Go" back into the light. B.T.W., I like the original version better with Dave's voice and sweet Tracy on her fiddle, perhaps because it is how I bonded with the song. Try to hear it if you can. :)

Thanks for recording Dave's Music! My sister appreciates you both! Please do more and let Dave's voice be heard!

Two of the greats still sounding great. Lovely Gaelic, traditional song.

+Pj deButler Not gaelic or traditional. Dave Carter, RIP>

    P.... d....

Song is not a traditional Gaelic. Was written by Dave Carter and is evocative of Native American philosophy of death and resurrection.

    Amazing Judy and Willie!
