Collins, Judy - The Rose Lyrics

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, its only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance

It's the one who won't be taking
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dyin'
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong

Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose

I say love it is a flower
    And you it's only seed

  6. S.... Y....

This song reduces me tears every time. Judy had a gorgeous voice, much more beautiful than Bette Middler's version. This is the definitive version in my opinion.

  7. T.... F....

this is a beautiful song -- but Judy "oversings" it -- esp toward the end.

Sry, Judy, gotta tell it like it is, baby.

  28. K.... C....

That was absolutely beautiful. What a voice she has. So glad she shares it with the world.

  29. e.... c....

There was an excellent NPR interview with this work`s composer and her sister a few years ago. Hearing it again makes me want to reinvestigate its origins. Thank you for a lovely post and its reminders.

    e.... c....

I`m giving myself and my SBS (Senior Brain Syndrome) a thumbs down. There are 2 songs that begin with the words, "Some say". The one I dis-remembered, featured in an NPR interview with it`s composer and her sister was "Heart Like a Wheel" ...the sisters, Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Amanda McBroom composed the magical, "The Rose" and performs it as no one else can. It was good to have had all this straightened out, to be re-introduced to the McGarrigles and to have been enthralled by Ms. McBroom`s rendition of her own creation. Please excuse this old lady. My thanks are repeated more emphatically today.

What a gem! So good to hear a new take on a song that only promotes the Bette Midler version which, in my opinion, was never the best one! What a difference and what a vocal range Judy Collons has. So refreshing.

  55. D.... E....

I've never heard this version, and in my favorite voice.
I had a dream once about a lover who was afraid to surrender his heart. In the dream we would listen to some songs together, over and over, while lying beside one another. But he would not let the last song play and I wondered what were the words, what was the refrain, he did not want to hear. Finally once he let it go on and it was "The Rose". And he held me in his arms.

    D.... E....

No offense to Bette Midler but Judy Collins' version is absolutely the most beautiful song I have ever heard

    D.... E....

Larry Johnson, couldn't agree more. The treasure that Judy has shared with us all is beyond gold. Good music never goes out of style. WHAT A VOICE!!!!!

    D.... E....

I first heard Judy's version of this song over 25 years ago on a shortwave radio. At the time I didn't realize who it was. Judy Collins' voice is that of an angel Thank you Robert

    Żabko kochana
NIe szukałem kogoś z kim mógłbym być
    lecz kogoś takiego
     Bez kogo nie umiem żyć
A tym wyjątkowym kimś jesteś właśnie Ty
    Przy Tobie jest mi dobrze
    Przy Tobie są moje sny
    Więc dziś kochanie
    Mówię Kocham Cię
    W dniu imienin
Przesyłam kilka róz w tej ślicznej piosence
    Wiesz że chciąłbym inaczej

I read Singing lessons Judy. I think I may know who you're singing about. I lived in Mpls from 80-90 and when I look at his picture I see him all over the city. Like a rose, he is blooming in the beyond. I will never meet you but you are one of my many musical heroes, and all of you have a place in my soul forever. Your voice is beyond the beyond. It really does it to me. boB
