Collins, Judy - Hallelujah Lyrics

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Collins, Judy Hallelujah Comments

Always associate this with the Iraqi War. My son said an Iraqi woman would climb to the top of her roof to bathe. Every American soldier respectfully turned their back to give her privacy. We shared a haunting conversation about war, the physical and mental wounds and the forgiveness that God can grant.

Judy Collins does a touching rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah! What a gift he left us.

The track is karaoke like. Done with virtual instruments. Not real ones.
I think back to Hard Loving Loser with that manic harpsichord track.
Paul Simon still is musically curious. So is Cohen.
Cheap backgrounds are not the way an iconic artist should go.

Drums and piano sound real to me--guitar, too, probably, under all that reverb, and the organ, too That said, this version somehow doesn't cut to the emotional heart of the song, in my opinion at least. Contrast Judy's 2012 live performance of "Open the Door", which I think blows away her original studio recording from back in the day.

I played bass on this record. It was recorded live in the studio - piano, Hammond organ, guitar, bass, drums, and Judy. Like it or don't like it, but it was a live band in the studio.

I love Judy Collins and she has done some beautiful interpretations of Leonard Cohen's music but I find this disappointing. The ambivalence is taken out of the song, partly because of the production which seems a bit on the saccharine side to me, partly because some of the verses that talk about bitterness and disillusion are missing. Maybe I've seen too many performances of this song on 'The Voice' or 'American Idol' that had church like settings and lighting, trying to make it into a religious anthem. It seems to me they miss the point. What about 'I've heard that there's a God above/But all I ever knew of love/Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya'? Yes, there is that Hallelujah, but 'it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah'. If you ask me, nobody can outdo k. d. lang's version.

+Mark Scott ,I think the best version is the writer's Leonard Cohen!

    @Noel B. Owens ;

    Leonard Had PROBLEMS !
    A LONG SUFFERING INDIVIDUAL.

WHY WOULD HIS OG VERSION SEEM LIKE THE "BEST" ?

IT'S "DEPRESSING" - THE "MUSIC" IS BEAUTIFUL -
HIS LYRICS ARE NOT ! 😒
