Collins, Judy - Farewell To Tarwathie Lyrics

Adieu Mormond Hill
And the dear land of Crimmond
I bid you farewell
I'm bound off for Greenland
And ready to sail
In hopes to find riches
In hunting the whale

Farewell to my comrades
For a while we must part
And likewise the dear lass
Who first won my heart
The cold coast of Greenland
My love will not chill
And the longer my absence
More loving she'll feel

Our ship is well rigged
And she's ready to sail
The crew they are anxious
To follow the whale
Where the icebergs do float
And the stormy winds blow
Where the land and the ocean
Is covered with snow

The cold coast of Greenland
Is barren and bare
No seed time nor harvest
Is ever known there
And the birds here sing sweetly
In mountain and dale
But there's no bird in Greenland
To sing to the whale

There is no habitation
For a man to live there
And the king of that country
Is the fierce Greenland bear
And there'll be no temptation
To tarry long there
With our ship bumper full
We will homeward repair

Farewell to Tarwathie
Adieu Mormond Hill
And the dear land of Crimmond
I bid you farewell
We're bound off for Greenland
And ready to sail
In hopes to find riches
In hunting the whale

Collins, Judy Farewell To Tarwathie Comments
  1. M.... M....

Hey, anybody else notice that an image comes up at around 1:18...standing white figures? not sure what that is or why it would be there. I can't pause on the image at the right moment to see it clearly after trying several times. Very mysterious... also she has a beautiful voice, not into the traditional songs, but I really love some of her other songs she sings.

  2. D.... ....

    Awesome!

  3. F.... s....

Perfectly pitched and pure voice. Not one note is out of place. One of my favourite tracks in "Colors of the Day" album. Her live performance is just as flawless as the recorded version. I very much hope that she will perform this song when she comes to Edinburgh in March, 2020. I've never seen her in concert, so this would be a real treat for me.

    F.... s....

Thank you so much Judy for the most gorgeous live rendition of this Scottish song in your concert in Edinburgh on Monday. It was flawless and this charming melody reminded me of Jean Redpath singing John McCormack's "Song to the Seals". It was the most unforgettable experience in my life to see you sing live. I will always treasure this memory. Your voice is the voice of amazing grace. Please come back soon to Scotland and we would love to have you back any time. The gentleman sitting next to me was moved to tears when you sang "Send in the clowns". He said that it was his favourite (and mine too). You and Mr Walden were both amazing!

  4. M.... S....

Judy Collins never received her highly-due recognition in the U.K.: a real tragedy. Listening to it again takes me back to the late 1960s when I used to frequent Folk Clubs. But no-one sang this song as beautifully as JC. In this rendering, her amazing voice is simply pitch perfect.

  5. t.... ....

I love this song, but i want to say that she should sing 'FAIRWEIL' @0:24. if you would care to listen to The corries' Derwentwater's Farewell, they sing 'fareweil, fareweil .......give it a listen. They are really good

  6. 8.... 1....

    LOVE YOU JUDE

  7. J.... S....

One very special lady is our. Joan have been a fan for 60 years and still going

  8. h.... ....

I have always loved Miss.Collins voice is as beautiful now as it was when I was a young boy in the 70s. And she still has the same gentle spirit, and still so pretty. Had a big crush on her back then!😉😉😉

  9. M.... C....

    Whaling & War share a strange beauty~ with love...lost/found.

  10. M.... C....

I treasured the old National Geographic record of Wale songs, in my barn atic, as a child...

  11. A.... A....

    Beautiful!

  12. J.... B....

Judy is just as beautiful now as she was as a young woman. Her blue eyes pierce a darkened hall all the way to the back and her long, flowing white hair add to her timeless intrigue...and the voice is still one of the best.

  13. T.... F....

"Thank you to the whales." ... Judy Collins, that little chick. Always a laugh riot.

  14. L.... W....

My best friend, Lisa and I listened to this album almost every day. We both lived this song. She died at 39, so my heart aches everytime I hear it.

  15. E.... C....

You know you can do it when you don't even need background music

  16. A.... H....

She has a very beautiful voice, It has been years since I have heard her

  17. K.... H....

Dear Lord that is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing this video! Thanks to Judy for her Blessed Angelic Voice!

  18. P.... B....

As good as this is, for a much more "stirring" version, try to find the Dutch folk group "Fungus" (yes, true!) from about 1975. Their version puts you on the boat.

  19. J.... F....

I'm not right to killin theses units.....i just can't to get into it.......for money...............I like money

    J.... F....

    Not more than my soul

  20. A.... C....

Does anyone know what that picture blip is at 19 seconds into the video? I was thinking perhaps it was an old subliminal photo or something. Can anyone view it? I keep trying to pause at the right moment but I don't have that ability on my device.

    A.... C....

Yes, I was able to pause it by slowing down the speed to 0.25 of Normal speed.
It's really nothing. Definitely not anything with subliminal intention or purpose.
Probably just a messed up frame from the recording device or the upload processing.

  21. G.... M....

This brings back memories... i sang this after doing Macbeth

  22. B.... M....

Tarwathie, - A wee place not far from my home town (Fraserburgh) in NE Scotland.... Lovely nostalgic song. Written circa 1850 by George Scroggie.

  23. T.... H....

Nice choice Kate , I was kind of in a bad mood . Feel much better now thanks

  24. d.... ....

Nice voice and melody but I find a couple of iffs ... First: A woman is not supposed to be hunting whales in the nineteenth century. Second: Whales can´t be heard unless you are under the sea, but if you are under the sea you won´t easily hear the human voice.

    d.... ....

Really? Is that what you took away from this? I take it you're not over 25, amiright?

"Nice voice". ..Well, she is the Grande Dame of folk music. Her voice and music has impacted at least two generations, and she's working on the third. Maybe fourth.

She's not singing it for herself. She's doing the voice of a young man who left to seek his fortune. Women sing "male parts" all the time. Ocassionally vice-versa.

That's the beauty of this song-most humans do not have the opportunity to listen to whale songs in person. Why would we only want a song to be exactly like it would be in nature if it could be even attempted? "if you hear the whales, then Judy is going to have to be underwater singing this". No. It's called "artistic rendition" (if someone has a better word, bring it on. I can't think of one just now ;) )

You have much to learn, Grasshopper.

    d.... ....

+Colleen H Excellent interpretation of Judy Collins and the song Colleen

    d.... ....

Thank you. James. Sometimes I do show my age...but Judy Collins is well worth the effort to bring understanding to a younger set of listeners. :)

    d.... ....

@Colleen H Well, I do agree with most of your comment. I'm 55 and spanish and I've been -when I was young- to a few english folk festivals. Nothing to say about Judy Collins. But I stand on what I said (A couple of iffs ...). I do undestand the lyrics. The sound of the whales is lovely, but what about their sound of when they are killed? The sailor voice could be also accompanied by the sound of the sea, or the sounds of a ship. These are just different examples of what you can do with a song. As you can also sing it faster or slower. A cappella or with an orchestra. Let me give you an advice to understand what a mean. Please listen to "Satisfaction" sang by Bjork and P:J: Harvey (here in youtube) and compare it with The Rolling Stones.

    d.... ....

    1. The song is intended to be sung by a man: originality.
    2. Whales, etc. Ever heard of 'poetic licence'? (English: That's 'licence', not 'license')

  25. G.... N....

"Age cannot wither her...." how true! The voice is still as pure and true as it ever was. I just listened to your beautiful rendition of this song, and it took my breath away, and transported me right back to my youth, when I used to lie on my bed at college and just let your beautiful voice wash over me. Gives me the same pleasure now in my 60's, as it did then. You have such a God given gift Judy.Thank you for all the wonderful memories, of listening to your music over the years. The quality was consistently OUTSTANDING.Regards, Christine.

  26. C.... M....

i thought she was Canadian of Irish extraction..................

  27. P.... C....

So beautiful - Judy's soulful voice above the whales' haunting cries. In the 1800's whale-oil lamps made a reason for whaling, but in this century there's no excuse to hunt and kill these magnificent seafaring mammals. Judy's haunting ballad gives a powerful call: Save the Whales!

  28. T.... G....

19 TROLLS VETOED THIS GREAT SONG .

  29. p.... ....

Beautiful, and she makes it seem effortless.

  30. c.... z....

  31. K.... C....

  35. f.... ....

This a capella piece shows what an incredibly beautiful voice she has.

  36. h.... ....

    h.... ....

for a long time i thought it was an inuite/eskimo song

  37. B.... M....

I just heard the back story to Judy's recording of this song tonight:http://www.npr.org/2014/12/26/373303726/recordings-that-made-waves-the-songs-that-saved-the-whales

  38. A.... S....

ive been crabbin an this is what it is all about baby

  39. S.... ....

i have loved this one since 1970!!  i understand it was written in 1857.  i have just posted a keyboard version to a disco beat (please dont worry, it's fine and it's contextual; that's what they call the beat on the yamaha….) and to the related melody of 'the parting song'

  40. e.... p....

lovely as always with Judy...where the angels touch the sea...

  41. G.... G....

You don't see artists like anymore -SHAME

    G.... G....

    Yes you do. Just look.

  42. B.... H....

    Judy sings of my area.

  43. d.... ....

Here's the deal... no one does this today.  No one.  It's music and it's musical and it's talent and it's amazing.  Nothing comes close to this today... nothing.  Thanks, Judy... thank you so much!!

    d.... ....

I disagree. Sarah Jarosz, Aiofe O'Donovan, Sarah Watkins, Sierra Hull...

    d.... ....

There are awesome singers around today but they are few and far between.
Nevertheless Judy is in her own category.

    d.... ....

    Joan Baez

  44. A.... A....

    Simply beautifull

  45. d.... ....

Remember that you once lived near the beach with a barefoot co-ed in cut-offs and played this song on vinyl and it makes it easier to grow old,

  46. S.... C....

    Unbelievable.

  47. H.... N....

Aren't we all seawater and stardust anyway?

  48. M.... D....

Can Lady Go-Go do that? Pitch perfect.... Judy Blue-eyes.....

  49. a.... b....

    Aye 'tis a bonnie song.

  50. R.... J....

And the song. ONEOF THE BEST ABOUT THE SEA, EVER. Thanks Judy.

  51. R.... J....

sounds like you know the "magik" of the ocean. There is no place on earth that is as wonderful and lonely at the same time. Really gives a man perspective. Four weeks on the water will cure all ills.

  52. v.... ....

Love the song. I know one shouldn't analyse a song as beautiful as this....only i must say there's both people and birds in Greenland :) ;) Love your Words btw BluegillGreg!

  53. k.... ....

Jk it healed my broken soul.

  54. k.... ....

WORST FUCKING SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD. Y'ALL MOTHERFUCKERS NEED TO GET SOME TASTE IN MUSIC.

    k.... ....

    kodyk99 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    k.... ....

    I wholeheartedly agree😘

    k.... ....

Kodyk99 I hope for your sake that you someday grow up enough to appreciate the beauty of this song and the pure, lovely voice singing it.

  55. C.... G....

Love this song -- I used to sing it as a lullaby to my children.

  56. E.... ....

    IRISH WOMAN, BREAK MY HEART

  57. B.... L....

We all have gifts, creative gifts. It comes from God our father the greatest creator of all. I am so glad that one of Judys gifts is singing. She doesn't need music, not every singer is as blessed as she. Her voice is crystal clear. I can bake you a cake or clean your house but she can move your soul. This song to me is perfection !! Thank you so much for sharing with us your wonderful gift..xo

  58. B.... L....

you have a poets heart. I love your words.

  59. S.... J....

And when Assisi, WA rises off Fidalgo Island next to the Shakespearean theatre-in-the-round, the OSD Univ (ocean systems defense) and is re-christened Tarwathie Island to launch the Django Bridges between Seattle and Santa Barbara, Judy will probably sing this one again...ssshhh, don't tell David, Graham, and the Mayan!! :-)

  60. B.... D....

a wonderful song off a wonderful album. thanks for the post!

  61. o.... s....

If you are unhappy with with your lot in life , listen to this song think of the suffering of the sailors months on the ocean in high seas whipped up by gale force 9 winds 16 hours a day for a pittance often resulting in frostbite and lost limbs or death and the needless slaughter of the harmless and defenceless Whales I cry every time I hear it and it puts my own life into perspective .

  62. 4.... ....

I can't get through this song without crying. It touches my soul.

  63. J.... L....

    I love, love, love, her.

  64. K.... R....

    That is just beautyfull

  65. C.... ....

    this is awesome!

  66. J.... D....

Aye! You be a lover of the sea.
Old Davie Jones would smile upon thee.

  67. A.... D....

  70. D.... S....

An Angel's Voice from on High, Stuck in the confines of earth, Thank you Judy for the years of singing and giving us such joy.

  71. M.... T....

How many singers can sing with just whale calls as her backups???

  72. k.... ....

This song has always been one of my favorite performed by Judy Collins. She's going to be in concert this week at THE EGG, in Albany, NY.

  73. A.... B....

    Beautiful.

  74. F.... W....

Her voice has been, and still is, like liquid silver.

  75. I.... A....

A Beautiful version of this song ,but think i like Ilsa stClairs version better ,but i may be becausei come from Aberdeenshire!

  76. M.... H....

She does this song very well, but this has nothing on The Corries' version.

  77. C.... ....

    sings like a bird!

  78. n.... n....

@Jenniferspartner Although whale hunting must be one of the most obnoxious things that our species has ever done, I just love this song. As soon as you mentioned those other two songs, I recognised the connection. Wonderful song.

  79. b.... ....

love it! I lov how Judy does not trill her voice and add flowery bits like some would be folk singers

  80. e.... ....

Makes me weep, but that may be becuase I'm off my meds.

  81. F.... ....

One of my favorite folk songs from the 1960s-70s was Farewell to Tarwathie song by Judy Collins and Whales. Wriien as a poem by George Scroggie circa 1856. It turns out he was my great-great- grand uncle. His brother Robert left Scotland and settled in Sarnia Ontario, Canada. What a thrill to have such a connection to such a wonderful song. The mellody has been used in many folk songs" The Wagoner Lad, Farewell Angelina and others.

  82. d.... ....

@BluegillGreg You made me gasp and feel insufficient. You're a poet, sir, reminding me of the wonder of work and the night.

  83. B.... ....

Reminds me of falling asleep standing up covered in blood with my knife still gutting black cod, three o clock in the morning fifty miles off the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. I'm afraid I'd do it again given the chance, old bones and all. It's the Ocean's version of god with stars jumping crazy all over the blackest sky as the boat drifts, rocking, with the deck lights out and the motor off. Aren't we all seawater and stardust anyway?

  84. B.... H....

I live not far from al the named places, tanwathie . Crimon and Mormond Hill. I just love this from the age of a bairn.

  85. D.... M....

    Memories of the North Atlantic

  86. J.... H....

    Thanks, and Again, Mistress

  87. D.... E....

This brings me to a complete stop... hanging on every note... and when she goes up a pitch for the last verse... I find myself leaning in and closing my eyes... because it is so beautiful... my heart goes out to the whales...and their survival... they should not be hunted!t

  88. B.... ....

Always loved this album - Must get a new needle for my deck so I can play it again!

  89. r.... ....

    Lovely song.

i miss hearing her rendition of 'Pirate Jenny'.

  90. k.... ....

Verra gweed ma freen' Creemin eis nay faar fae heis an oor neerist toon Peterheed eestae bi a whaalen statien!

  91. C.... K....

One of my favorite artists....such a pure, beautiful voice. I first heard this song when I was very young, and I've always loved it....thanks for posting.

  92. m.... ....

what a voice stirs the Scottish blood in me!!

  93. R.... M....

Her voice is so beautiful. She is such an accomplished vocalist.

  94. I.... ....

over all the oceans and lands I've been , only two kinds of people I've chanced to meet - the sensitive, and the dead.
    Long live the sensitive...thanks, Judy!

  95. B.... H....

No. You are thinking of "Bonnie Ship the Diamond. This one, "Farewell to Tarwathie" was on her "Whales And Nightingales" album, released in November 1970.

  96. j.... ....

    Oh that voice.....those eyes!
