Collins, Judy - Chelsea Morning Lyrics

I woke up, it was a Chelsea morning
And the first thing that I heard
Was a song outside my window
The traffic wrote the words
It came ringing up like Christmas bells
Rapping up like pipes and drums

Oh, won't you stay we'll put on the day
And we'll wear it 'till the night comes

I woke up, it was a Chelsea morning
And the first thing that I saw
Was the sun through yellow curtains
And a rainbow on my wall
Blue, red, green and gold to welcome you
Crimson crystal beads to beckon

Oh, won't you stay we'll put on the day
There's a sun show every second

Now the curtain opens on a portrait of today
And the streets are paved with passersby
Pigeons fly, and papers lie
Waiting to blow away

I woke up, it was a Chelsea morning
And the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey
And a bowl of orange juice too
And the light poured in like butterscotch
Stuck to all my senses

Oh, won't you stay we'll put on the day
And we'll talk in present tenses

When the contain closes
And the rainbow runs away
I will bring you incense owls by night
By jewel light, by candlelight, if only you will stay
Oh my darling won't you wake up, it is a Chelsea morning

Collins, Judy Chelsea Morning Comments
  1. T.... ....

Judy covering another Joni piece? *instantly likes*
One of my first a cappella arrangements (in the late 90s) was a... well, today's term is "mashup"... of "Both Sides Now," starting with Joni's version, going to Judy's, then ending with Joni's. Let me tell you, a bunch of college-aged kids at that time basically looked at me like I was insane, and of course, none of them had ever heard the song before. None of them even knew who either artist was, actually. So sad. Such amazing music from that era. I was born too late.

    A typical Joni Mitchell song

In this video, her eyes remind me of a Star Trek episode.

No wonder Stephen Stills wrote "Suite Judy Blue Eyes"! She appears to be fortified with some substance, but still (or should I say Stills?) Those Eyes!

    Beautiful girl

    ONLY JUDY COLLINS

I can attest that Judy Collins can still sing this song as gorgeously as ever and blow an audience away. And she's 79.

    T.... B....

You're absolutely right, Tracy. I went to her concert recently in Frederick, MD and she sang this so beautifully.

  9. e.... ....

    Oooooooooooooooh, Judy Collins.

Believe it or not, when Hillary heard this song she decided to name her daughter Chelsea. Look it up. /wiki/Chelsea_Clinton

  11. a.... k....

Chelsea Clinton named for this version, not the Joni version. Useful for when Chelsea runs for Senate in NY.

  12. C.... C....

There are some songs that are written by Joni that are best sung by Joni. There are some songs written by Joni, best song by Judy. This is one of those songs.

Buffy did some cool Joni covers too.

    C.... C....

Sorry, nooooooo! But to her credit, she has beautiful eyes and seems very sweet. Never have liked her way of singing, though.

    C.... C....

She interprets a number of other artists very well, like Leonard Cohen and Jacques Brel.

Just to set the facts straight about "Chelsea Morning." This was written by Joni Mitchell in 1967 or '68, when she was living in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. It was recorded first by Judy Collins, in 1968, in the recording sessions for her album, "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" It did not make it onto the album, but Elektra released it as a single in summer of 1969. It hit the Billboard Top 100 chart in August.

The Clintons have said many times that they named their daughter after Judy Collins' hit recording of the song. Bill Clinton has been a huge fan of Judy's for much of his life. At his first presidential inauguration ball, he invited Judy to sing "Chelsea Morning," Amazing Grace" and a few other songs. She later sang at at least one State Dinner, and visited with the Clintons several times, staying at the White House in the Lincoln Bedroom. During the Clinton Administration, she became a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador. She has traveled extensively, supporting and bringing notice to projects supporting children around the world.

Judy released a live version of "Chelsea Morning" on her 1971 LP, LIVING, and recorded a new studio version of the song for her 1995 anthology, FOREVER.

Judy's other recordings of Joni Mitchell songs include "Both Sides Now," in 1967. In the mid-Sixties, both Judy and Joni lived in New York City, and had many friends in common. Before Joni had a recording contract, she sang the song to Judy over the phone, and gave her permission for Judy to record it and set it out into the world. The recording became a Top Ten hit for Judy, and had great effect in helping to launch Joni Mitchell's career. Judy also has recorded "Michael from Mountains," 1967 and "That Song About The Midway," 2005. "Chelsea Morning" has maintained it popularity for over 40 years, and still today, Judy Collins very often opens her concerts with "Chelsea Morning."

Will it be sung again at next year's Presidential Inauguration Gala??

    B.... H....

Let's hope not! Although since she had gotten older she sings more on key now. Is that lisp due to bad dental work or just a chronic problem?. Does she speak with a lisp or only sing that way?

    B.... H....

Beta Hi-Fi Archive though I like Judy, she is not the singer that Joni is. I've been listening to her lately on headphones. Joni's voice is extraordinary and very unique. her range and control can never be matched by Judy. I'm sure Judy would agree.

    B.... H....

Beta Hi-Fi Archive another thing, I was around in the late 60's. I've never known until tonight that Judy does a version. I've only heard Joni's version played on any radio station.

    B.... H....

Bill, with Judy in the Lincoln bedroom.....hmmmm

    B.... H....

That Song About the Midway is one of the most underrated on all of Clouds

  16. r.... ....

    Those eyes ..wow.

  17. M.... T....

She's wearing the ugliest dress I've ever seen (even by '60s standards), looks like a bathrobe. But wow, what a voice! I actually always preferred her version to Joni's.

    M.... T....

Afghans were big in that era. The Mamas and the Papas wore them in concert.

  18. R.... G....

I bought her record in 1969 and that recording was far better than this one...she had an incredible voice that had a wide spectrum of pitch...she was lovely.

  19. B.... H....

Graduated High School in '71 and this was our Class Song. Love it!

  20. K.... L....

    Love it

  21. R.... H....

Why would Bill and Hillary name their kid after this? I have nothing against the name Chelsea, but this woman cannot even sing!

    R.... H....

    No, he is tone deaf.

    R.... H....

    No she's excellent.

  22. g.... ....

Excellent.  That has to be a hard song to sing and play guitar with.

  23. S.... J....

Her guitar might be a little out of tune, but her? No, not at all.

    S.... J....

    She is fantastic.
