Collier, Jacob - Djesse Lyrics

Djesse has a sky like a merry-go-round
Making circles in a mind made of tapestry
And the world outside never seems to make a sound
So he lives inside his world full of majesty
Djesse close his eyes and sees the rain rise up
From the deep blue waters of infinity
He says, "I wish I knew the reason for the fire in my heart
But I can't seem to tell you why it burns for me"

Oh Djesse, won't you come back home (Back home)
(Oh, Djesse, won't you come back home)
Oh Djesse, won't you come back home (Back home, come back)
Come home

I said, "Djesse, you've been silent for your whole, whole life
How I wish I knew the world burning in your heart
I've been listening to the words and the kookaburra birds
But I can't see the fire you've been singing of"
He said, "The moon's so high and the water's so wide
And you're never gonna find what you're searching for
But deep inside you, there's a world with a merry-go-round
Like a sky, such a fire you've never felt before"

Oh Djesse, won't you come back home (Back home)
(Oh, Djesse, won't you come back home)
Oh Djesse, won't you come back home (Come back, come back)
Come home

Oh Djesse, set me free, set me free, set me free
Oh Djesse, set me free, let me be what you can be
Oh Djesse, set me free, set me free, set me free
Oh Djesse, set me free, let me be what you can be
Oh Djesse, set me free, set me free, set me free
Oh Djesse, set me free, let me be what you can be
Oh Djesse, set me free, set me free, set me free
Oh Djesse, set me free, let me be what you can be

Said, Djesse, close your eyes and be free
Djesse (Djesse, oh oh), be who you wanna be
Djesse (Djesse, oh oh), close your eyes and you'll see
(Djesse, Djesse, Djesse, oh, Djesse)
Djesse (Djesse, oh oh), be who you wanna be
(Djesse, Djesse, Djesse, Djesse, set me free)
Djesse (Djesse, oh oh), close your eyes and be free
(Djesse closed his eyes, sees the rain rise up)
Djesse (Djesse, oh oh), be who you wanna be
(Djesse knows the reason for the fire in my heart)
Oh Djesse, set me free, let me be who you can be
Djesse, close your eyes and be free
Oh Djesse, set me free, set me free, set me free
Djesse, be who you wanna be
Oh Djesse, set me free, let me be who I can be

Theres one thing I don’t like about him though: his singing voice doesn’t sound good to me. Most of his music would sound better with another singer doing the job.

I feel colors with tones, notes, and chords. If you experience music like this then I suggest listening to this song while watching a colorful breathless sunset or sunrise if youre an early bird(not I). Its absolutely a clean pure pleasure! Its all I can say peeps! JC, you are my musical spiritual brother!

I'd be curious to know what a synesthete would see while listening to this!!

    S.... B....

hi, synesthete here, what i see hearing this is best described as indescribable visuals, pretty close to a magic mushroom trip lol

    S.... B....

Louis Cifer and how does that compare to other music you listen to?

    S.... B....

@ophello i tend to prefer more complex types of music, the stuff i see depends on and is unique to the music.

  19. A.... C....

This song is straight magic live. Thank you for such a memorable night in SF last night

    A.... C....

Agreed, it was one of the most magical parts of an astounding and inspiring show

    A.... C....

I saw him in New Orleans about two weeks ago and it was the best show I've been to in a decade

  20. m.... ....

Jacob, thank you for this and for so many other incredible pieces of music. Your sense of adventure and discovery is remarkable. Your imagination knows no bounds and it is refreshing and as amazing as it is inspiring. I saw your show in NYC and I feel fortunate to be around during this musical journey you are embarking upon. I could go on and on......your A Cappella works are astounding and harmonically fascinating and beautiful. All of your compositions are outstanding and you are burning it up on Piano, keys, percussion, bass, guitar (electric and acoustic)...Keep on, my brother - you are truly amazing!!!

  21. N.... B....

Jacob is musical lateral thinking personified. Where is the precedent?

    N.... B....

Stevie Wonder, his greatest influence. Listen to Jacob's interviews and listen to ALL of Stevie's music, and you'll see why.

  22. I.... m....

    Erm.... gimme Vol 2 m8

  23. W.... R....

hehe i got a dodie ad before this! pretty nice

  24. W.... A....

Here because of Adam Neely; how is this guy so good at music?

    W.... A....

His insane use of harmony, not just 3 part. 6 part or 8 part harmony even. The way he easily incorporates microtonality and polyrhythms into his music. His general knowledge of music theory. Not all of it can be seen in this song. You should check out other songs, including ones in his previous album, In My Room.

  25. I.... F....

It's hullarious that it's in B half sharp... wait no... something like 30 cents... you never know with jacob collier

    I.... F....

  31. S.... ....

And thank you Jacob for introducing me to the kookaburra bird. Mr. Collier is peerless here as usual. Different tracks feel like my favorites at different times, it's amazing. This is my current fave. All Night Long had a looooong ass time with that honor lol.

  34. M.... P....

This is my favorite so far. So...so excellent. Your lyrics are breathtaking on top of such a lush track!! Aghhh

  35. A.... B....

This song is masterfully done, but self-centered and unrelatable. Generally, I am a massive admirer of J.C.'s creative work, I think he's the greatest musical genius of our time... But it's like there is music in J.C. but he doesn't have anything to say to the world. There's no message, no conflict to solve, no painful experience to deal with, no drive for the better. I don't think lyrics necessarily have to come from a negative place, not all songs have to be blues, but when all is fine and well, what is there of relevance to say?
You can't really hold it against a young talented man who's had a happy, full life and is generally a happy person that they don't put out an emotional roller-coaster of lyrics, but I would rather listen to Radiohead Creep for the 100th time...

    A.... B....

    Live on shallow brother.

    A.... B....

You don't suppose maybe there are more tricks up his sleeve on this quadruple album he just gifted to the world, do you?

  36. M.... ....

    2:48 Listen very closely...
you can hear him playing the grammy award while it moves from side to side.

  38. E.... ....

My daughter's said this sounds like a song at Disney. lol I so love this entire album! Great job!

  39. S.... S....

Jacobs' harmonic and rhythmic skills are off the radar.

  40. K.... G....

    Two things.

"Djesse" hidden in the groove around 3:32.

The groove, which started at 3:10, could have gone on ages and I would have bopped along as long as I could. I was sad to see it go so soon.

I'm absolutely loving this music. Every bit of it.

  41. C.... ....

Lol making a song involving around harmonic progression of: I (mostly) and making it sound SO interesting.
The chords are more so a colourisation around it. (Except for the chorus 😊👍🏻💃🏼) lalaaa🗣🎶

  42. A.... ....

I’m gonna remix this; I love what you e laid down here!

  43. e.... /....

The more I listen, the more I'm astounded by the orchestration. Really really excellent stuff.

  44. J.... ....

cant wait for vol 2! I bet its going to be fire based

  47. R.... W....

Is anyone hearing Happy Talk from South Pacific? Love the new album very indervidual tracks. Volume 1 will be on my player tonight, definitely worth the wait. 😊

    R.... W....

Rich Wintle Yes that’s exactly how it feels! Such a great setting

  48. 1.... ....

London bridge is falling down! Especially after 2:30

  49. R.... G....

Jacob, you are such an inspiration! I hope to meet you one day, or even just see you in concert! Your music is so beautiful, and you seem like such a genuine and wonderful person! Love from Canada!

  50. M.... C....

Interesting note - It's an uneven waltz with 3/3/2 subdivision but Jacob keeps singing in straight eighths so it ends up feeling like 4/4, just funkier. It should be complex triple meter but Jacob seems to not really think like that - he talks about his thought process in one of the June interviews and he seems to just like modifying 4/4 to give things a more unique groove - like Hideaway has some ridiculously complex 5/8 hemiolas that end up just being internal rhythmic texture since he just sings in 4 over it anyways. Complicated internally, but pretty basic on the outside.

    M.... C....

    3/3/2 is just 8/8 rhythm

    M.... C....

    sums up my girl lol

    M.... C....

@aknopf Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, Merry merry king of the bush is he... ( its an Aussie bird)

    a.... ....

"water so wide", not "wall so wide"?

    a.... ....

    @Ry L
That part is quite slurry and your suggestion makes much more sense, so I will just put it in. :) In fact, I will change the whole line to "The moon so high and the water so wide". So thanks for the hint!

    a.... ....

    Excellent, thank you so much!

    a.... ....

At 3:55 I normally hear "rain rise up, now", instead of "big wide sun, oh", but I can also hear the latter if I try

    T.... M....

I'm glad you also enjoy his music

  63. G.... M....

Really love how this song seems to be connected to Becca Stevens song Regina

"Djesse set me free" hold up guys, who is Djesse and why is he/she/it holding Jacob captive omg
Jokes aside, this album is damn crazy <3

  65. E.... P....

Why do I feel like Jacob tricked us again and that this song could be in 5/4?

    E.... P....

Or maybe just 4/4... for once

    E.... P....

To elaborate, and for those who are confused by the comment, I wrote it after listening to the section around 1:09.

    E.... P....

Yes, that could be or he wrote it in 8/8 (which is kind of the same) and always put an accent on 1,3,7

    E.... P....

because you don't know what you're talking about.

  68. A.... H....

The whole album is gonna be EPIC

  69. M.... M....

Is this song about Djesse (aka JC) declaring creative and (genre) independence and freedom to grow as an artist, human, soul. "Set him free, Let him be who he can be". Thank you Jacob for the boundless inspiration that you keep giving.

    M.... M....

    That's what I thought!!! XD

    M.... M....

This song might be about all of the hate comments he gets on yt, about average people not liking what he's bringing to music

    M.... M....

    from a live show:
"this song is about the soul of everyone when they were younger, the soul that has that creativity" or something, idk I can't remember what he said because I had plugs in

    M.... M....

“Djesse is your inner child. Everyone thinks growing up is so serious, but we should have the same freedom to play as we did as children. Remember to play.”
    -Jacob at a live show

  70. G.... B....

One day, I'll be able to say I was one of the first to ever hear this album.

I'll speak of this day with only fondness.

    G.... B....

hasuhasuhaas me too! Post on my Instagram soon as I've listen. Just for the records rsrs

    G.... B....

    it sucks

    G.... B....

how can you like jacob collier

    G.... B....

@Jude Roberts is just trying to get a rise out of us. Don’t mind him and he’ll bother someone else.

  71. M.... O....

Definitely, this album must be listened with a good DAC, dedicated amp and so specials headphones. It is audiophile category.

    M.... O....

@rorybz speakers are a separate matter. I agree that speakers make a huge difference to sound. Digital converters are mostly a solved technology. 96k is a high enough sample rate to push a that aliasing out of the audible range (which is the main artifact you get from digital audio). You don't need a special converter to do that.

As soon as that digital audio becomes voltage then you better make sure that your speakers have a good reaponse. Ideally completely flat.

Prior to that, the room in which your speakers sit better be sufficient, again ideally flat response to all frequencies.

Yes, I do care about audio. I don't care for the audiophilia industry, who pray and profit on those who are ignorant. No offence. And it is not all companies that do this.

    M.... O....

at the time of this writing, this music is not available to the public in any lossless format anywhere. any "audiophile" nonsense with respect to this album is just that - nonsense.

    M.... O....

@peter g Tidal store. :P (And it's OK if you don't want to hear all the care Jacob took with this album. It's a free country. I'll just go on enjoying it here.)

    M.... O....

@rorybz: my premise was (happily) incorrect but - given that premise - my point was valid: any "audiophile" talk with regard to compressed formats is nonsense. but i stand corrected, and i thank you for pointing me to tidal. (for some reason, the tidal link from jacob's page points to amazon for me.) i do indeed very much want to hear the album in its best light; i'm bitterly disappointed that it hasn't been released on CD (perhaps you saw jacob answer my questions on the topic during the last two patreon livestreams that he's done). don't know why you would think i don't, but it's a free country wherever you live, so i guess it's OK.

    M.... O....

@peter g Depends on if you consider 12" vinyl lossless. I'm looking at my vinyl copy of Djesse Vol. 1 as I write this. :)

  72. E.... H....

    The Collier Waltz

    E.... H....

It's definitely dance rhythm, good ear! However, it cant be (in an academic sense) categorized as a true waltz. It's actually closer to a particular tango syncope (123 123 12) or even a bolero. In any case, this song is in 4. You may have waltz-like music that is not in triple meter (i.e. this), but it is not technically a waltz in a true danceable sense. A fast and dirty way to explain why this isnt is that whils there are 3 different sort of accent groups (ONE two three ONE two three ONE two) they are not even. The first two groups contain 3 pulses while the last only has 2. Hope that makes sense!

    E.... H....

@Alex Stewart So, could you waltz in other odd time signatures? Like, 7/4 waltz (but fast enough to be isochronous) ?

    E.... H....

@GEMOTO I'd say no, not in the danceable sense since a waltz must be in triple meter.

    E.... H....

@Alex Stewart you can't stop me!! *furiously jigs and swoops myself 7 times and then flops onto the ground in defeat*

    E.... H....

@GEMOTO hey, you do you. I've been wrong before. Keep digging into musical concepts like this. It's more important that you're interested rather than figuring out what is "technically" right.

  73. J.... ....

  79. T.... H....

How is there already a dislike?

Well, whoever did it realized that they made a horrible mistake, because there are now no dislikes. :)

  80. J.... ....

    Imagine disliking this... Why?

    J.... ....

    I'm the 177 like on a 177/0 ratio.
Regular Youtube videos has a 10/1 (like/dislike) ratio. All jacob's videos are about 100/1. Let that sink in :)

    J.... ....

@Martí Solé That's because he is our saviour. Only he can pull off such feats.
Also someone had disliked the video when I first clicked on it, but it seems they have taken back their sin...

    J.... ....

It's cuz regular music has been ruined for them now.

    J.... ....

    I still see a dislike...

    J.... ....

Only 1 dislike over 472 likes right now though

  81. C.... ....

I expect Djesse will set me free ;)

  83. A.... C....

Interesting style deviation. Oom pa pa haha

I'm also realizing with this video (I had suspicions after All Night Long) that the visualization is tailored to the individual song rather than being a one-animation-fits-all thing. Very cool.

    And here the mystery unfolds
