Colin Hay - Freedom Calling Lyrics

If you hear a voice call out your name
Saying you can stop yourself from falling
And if he strikes you in his fear and shame
Well you can leave him to his ruin

If your dreams they wake you in the night
And your heart it is a pounding
If you cry out as you wake in your fright
And the wind it is a-howling

Maybe it's time to find another place
Where nobody even knows your face
There is no need to be afraid
For it's only freedom calling

If your tears begin to overflow
As you walk against the undertow
There is no need to be afraid
For it's only freedom calling

If you're sad 'cause you're all alone
And your hands they are a shaking
And your miracle cure's not working anymore
And the flood bank's close to breaking

Suddenly you're on an open unknown road
Passing all the heavy, long wide loads
It is time to make your great escape
And you can hear your freedom calling

I want to dive into the sea of love
But my knees they are a quaking
I can see myself high up above
And there's no time left for faking

I no longer need to understand
What it is to truly be a man
Only when I gave up on my masterplan
Did I then hear freedom calling

Did I then hear freedom calling

I feel a smug sense of satisfaction at having bought just about every MAW and solo record as it came out, but whenever we discovered or rediscovered Colin Hay, just remember that it's down to people like him, Lloyd Cole and Robyn Hitchcock that the real essence of melodic songwriting still exists. One of my favourite tracks, too - makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I'm not even of Celtic descent...

  15. R.... T....

More like rediscovered his work on Scrubs. I followed him shortly after Men at Work disbanded but never bought the remarkably hard to find albums.

@stevejedi Come on, I think calling him Australian is fair enough. Aside from growing up here, he wrote one of the most iconic songs about Australia and being Australian, ever. Let us have him.

    I.... ....

    Colin James Hay

Place of Birth: Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland

Date of Birth: June 29, 1953

Colin Hay is a Scottish-born Australian singer, songwriter, musician, and actor.

Colin was born in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Isabella and James “Jim” Hay. He moved with his family to Australia when he was fourteen years old.

@Jimmythepin Australia is a melting pot of cultures from across the world. His parents probably came here to try and give their kids the quality of life lacking in Scotland. Many of us here have Irish/Scottish/English or other descent, my ancestors came here from 1854 - 1890 and probably for the same reasons as I suggested. Britain had a class structure where working class couldn't lift itself up from the gutters or if you were farmers you were beholding to the gentrified landowners. Australia gave those people a chance at a life mostly without class or caste system and a chance to make a better life for their kids. Sadly those systems are pretty evident here now. In Kilwinning he may not have got that chance.

I think Australians all know of Colin Hay from Seachange, an Australian mini-series that was famous in the 90s. But then he is an Aussie ....

I first heard this song on the postcard bandi and had to get it.I remember there was a point on me travels when i felt alone n was on an overnight random shared ride from hannover to amsterdam.I never had anything planned and was on me own.I was listening to me music at the time and this song came. funnily enough the bit where he goes "suddenly you're on an upon unknown road, passing all the heavy long wide loads" came on as we drove pass 2 trucks and i felt.. i guess my freedom calling :)

I heard this when I was 12 as the final episode of Seachange in Australia. An Australian drama series based on community and getting rid of the city and all the things that do not really matter. This was the final song on the final episode. I have been searching for it forever!! Thank God I found it is all I can say!

  39. D.... H....

I've been a fan ever since I first heard 'Down Under' back in 1983. This, though, is probably my favourite song that he has ever written. So powerful and with outstanding instrumentation and arrangement. Love to see him live!
