I don’t know what the Escapist is about. Maybe it's about faraway things that are very close to your heart. It's about distance and how we get from one place to another in our heads, riding on emotion, on shared experiences. Its about knowing how time passes, that memory is all one has, fading memory that we hold onto with such desperation that it becomes an escape in itself.

The Escapist is the haze shrouded horizon on a winter afternoon, it’s a distant boat on a calm ocean, its dark scudding clouds pregnant with cold rain. Its waving silver birch and marram grass and lost things found in dreams. It’s the sand slipping through your fingers, it’s the smell of someone familiar that you will never see again, it’s a lone cabin at the edge of a forest. It’s the dreams of a child, the regrets of an old man, the whispering of a lover. Yet, in the end, it's watching a necklace of lights laid out under a star sprinkled sky, souls of light moving away, moving within and moving nowhere. Its watching sound, tasting memory, and touching air. I don’t know what The Escapist is all about…I really don’t.

I'm not really into the band anymore. I don't like their more recent 'pop orientated sound'. I moved on to hard rock and heavy metal a while ago. But, this track feels so nostalgic and immortal to me. I'll always enjoy hearing it, among some of their other work. It's funny actually. I feel like with Coldplay, it's their music that mostly goes un-noticed that I appreciate the most. I regard tracks like 'The Escapist' and 'Fly On' as their best work.

Listen to more of John Hopkin's music, he's the mastermind behind the background music of this song. But I definitely think it has a chiptune vibe to it...

Around 1:50 there's this sound that I think you can replicate with a bassoon or an oboe, possibly a cello. I always thought it was humming but it definitely isn't. A piano or a harp would be good around 3:10
