Cohen, Leonard - Tower Of Song Lyrics
Well my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
Oh in the Tower of Song
I said to Hank Williams: how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
A hundred floors above me
In the Tower of Song
I was born like this, I had no choice
I was born with the gift of a golden voice
And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this table right here
So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I'm very sorry, baby, doesn't look like me at all
I'm standing by the window where the light is strong
Ah they don't let a woman kill you
Not in the Tower of Song
Now you can say that I've grown bitter but of this you may be sure
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there's a mighty judgment coming, but I may be wrong
You see, you hear these funny voices
In the Tower of Song
I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
But I feel so close to everything that we lost
We'll never, we'll never have to lose it again
Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back
They're moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly
From a window in the Tower of Song
Yeah my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
Oh in the Tower of Song

Cohen, Leonard Tower Of Song Comments
comme j'aime écouter ce grand frère
This song. I gave up on LC for 25 years until, by accident, I saw him perform ToS on some TV programme in 1997. I caught up. Quickly. It was the start of a great recovery, all the beautiful (and funny) songs I'd been deprived of for so long, songs that mapped my life then. Everything I've seen and heard of LC since then has been a true delight. What he gave to the world is immense, a man for all seasons. So many great tributes on Youtube, and, in the words of Bob Dylan, "This one's for Leonard". RIP maestro.
Excellent song.
Grandpa said u are his loyal friend thanks😗😗😗😇😍😍😍😇😙😙😙

You don't know how many french people are in love with Leonard's poetry ! I have been listening to him in the last sixties and I never stop till Leonard's death. More than 50 years are gone from "Songs of a Room" and I still listen to him. I can't live without his songs.

I have to stop watching concert videos with Leonard. I run out of tears. And it hurts so much. It‘s sweet pain, but it hits you straight and center. What great legacy you left Leonard!

I just love this song and Leonard's performance in this whole concert was mesmerizing.
Leonard - you were and always will be one out of the box. You speak for so many...and given so many so much

This is so unbearably poignant after his death, but still so wonderful.

He loves his own songs. That's why they're performed with such depth each and every time. He's so proud of his catalog of work, of words, like pearls strung together hand-picked with care. Aw, see! He brings the poet out in all of us!
Love your comment
The sweetness of Leonard Cohen
singing this song is bliss..backed by his angelic songstresses.
I bet their memories will also be sweet of this man of such beauty.
♥
Ein Sympatischer Mann , und diese Stimme . Wahnsinn ich liebe Männer mit tiefer Stimme .
MAGICO MR COHEN.
Hardly scat singing from this vocal ensemble .
All I need to know is... Who the phuk are the 44 cretins who unlike this???
I love how the Golden Voice line can be taken both as an artist's gift, and as a bit of self deprecating humour by Leonard, accepting that he was never a conventionally good vocalist, and yet, the crowd just gave it up to him.
We were lucky to have such a gifted yet humble poet in our ranks, sheer genious trumpts conventional definitions of talent, Leonard was never going to hit high notes and blow crystal cups, instead, he wrote anthems for the generations to come, and the crowd knows just how lucky they are to see the Master perform.
Exactly. It's like a little nod to his lack of 'a golden voice' but what IS golden are his words. They're tumbled gems!
The world will never know what it had in Leonard Cohen. He truly was a genius of expression... his music is packed with everything you could possibly feel. What a gifted man and how I wish I could have met him... thank you Mr. Cohen.
There is something about this man...when you listen to him time gets ashamed of running, it stops and do a "reverence."
Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back
They're moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly

Dudadadamdedudadam the answer to the mysteries, you tell 'um Leonard. He knew so much but was such a humble soul. He was a magnificent fellow, one of a kind, and his flame shines on.

THE definitive performance of this song.
Yeah, we have to put up with JE and GM's pop tarts catering to the filthy .... who just love fresh meat, young blood to satisfy their appetite and entertain their fgdel. FESWRO NWTGTYFCOEYT. Miserable scoundrels who will pay in their fucking heaven of vestal virgins, sinister creeps belonging to their multicolored sects, on and on, how to take the common man or woman to the cleaners., simply repugnant, such a con game.
Extraordinaire!

Am I the only one that thinks his lyrics are both sensual and playful? I don't think "I ache in the places where I used to play" has anything to do with 'playground' equipment. He was truly a master of narrative poetry.
Very sensual.
April S I was amazed by Leonard Cohen's writing. I find it full of frailty, strength, desire, regret all the emotions we all feel but can't necessarily express. His music is definitely worth a listen and I adored his Vevo video of 'Dance Me to the End of Love'. It shows just how sensual and loving he thinks... just my opinion.
@Susan Emmerich That particular video of"Dance Me to the End of Love' is my favorite, also. I'm tearing up now just thinking of the song and the beautiful older couples in it. I can feel what his message is but so hard to put into words. You said it most eloquently. Thank you
@Susan Emmerich One more thing. I often wonder how he lived with all those conflicting emotions in him fighting to get out. Yes, he wrote songs, poetry and books but they didn't quell the tide. I hope he found peace before he died. Perhaps 'You Want it Darker' calmed the war inside.
@April S possibly but it almost seems to me that 'You Want It Darker' was more of his expression of the war within... either way Leonard Cohen was a Magnificent man. It's my opinion that the world does not produce the deep introspective minds like Leonard Cohen anymore... hope I'm wrong.
golden love!
That reaction - from audience and from Leonard - to the 'golden voice' line is peak humanity.
It's his humor, and they get it. He is the funniest songwriter in ages. An old group called 10cc were funny as well.
@Kathryn His introduction to this song always makes me laugh
@Tom Frascina I find his humor refreshing in light of his often glaringly truthful lyrics. They balance it somehow. He's able to show a humane side of himself through the humor that tells us we're all flawed, but everything is going to be okay somehow. If we don't have his experiences in common, we can at least laugh at ourselves together. Hard to explain.
This song is the voice of soul
The JESUS & MARY CHAIN boarded this song, hijacked it and steadily downward spiraled while stoned and smiling right into a power-plant(!) Check their version out!!!
'My friends are gone and my hair's turned grey , that's not a bag full of hammers , that's my arse on display . '
