Cohen, Leonard - Samson In New Orleans Lyrics

You said that you were with me
You said you were my friend
Did you really love the city
Or did you just pretend

You said you loved her secrets
And her freedoms hid away
She was better than America
That’s what I heard you say

You said how could this happen
You said how can this be
The remnant all dishonored
On the bridge of misery

And we who cried for mercy
From the bottom of the pit
Was our prayer so damn unworthy
The Son rejected it?

So gather up the killers
Get everyone in town
Stand me by those pillars
Let me take this temple down

The king so kind and solemn
He wears a bloody crown
So stand me by that column
Let me take this temple down

You said how could this happen
You said how can this be
The chains are gone from heaven
The storms are wild and free

There’s other ways to answer
That certainly is true
Me, I’m blind with death and anger
And that’s no place for you

There’s a woman in the window
And a bed in Tinsel Town
I’ll write you when it’s over
Let me take this temple down

Cohen, Leonard Samson In New Orleans Comments
  1. R.... S....

Is this song about hurricane Katrina?

  2. M.... W....

A magnificent, imaginative song, biblical and secular; old and new. Who else could have linked Samson with New Orleans, and addressed Samson himself?

  3. k.... n....

there is no one compete as a writer for pure compassion

  4. R.... W....

    Haunting, elegiac. A masterpiece.

If Americans really understood these.lyrics and how anti Christian and communistic they are ....maybe theyd not feel so in awe of this ",weaver of words"

Adore the music and lyrics of leonard cohen. I’m angry that they didn’t grant him the Nobel prize. Bob Dylan wasnt dying at the time .

  15. J.... S....

    Grande Cohen

  16. M.... W....

Sensational I find. How did Leonard link Samson with New Orleans out of thousands of cities? A genius in music.

  17. M.... W....

From the first piano notes, the song has tremendous impact. A serious dialogue with the strongman biblical judge.( Only one speaker though). 'You said that you were with me/ You said you were my friend/ Did you love the city/ Or did you just pretend?'
I just want to 'take this temple down' as Samson did, after this song.

  18. M.... W....

A lifelike conversation with the strong biblical prophet. A nice blend of the secular and sacred, at which Leonard Cohen excelled.

  19. E.... S....

I hate those background singing women i think they just kill the effect of his voice and ruin the song😤

  20. T.... n....

  21. L.... T....

I discovered him because Nina Simone sang several of his songs. He is amazing and I deeply regret that I did not see him live. I listen to his Hallelujah almost everyday. And I confess that I am in love with the man who does that amazing piano solo. What is his name>

I rarely like an album on first listening ... this is an exception ... just brilliant !! ..

  63. N.... S....

    @***** Cosa accade?

We are blessed to be living in the same time as Leonard Cohen. Never let his music die.
