Cohen, Leonard - I Left A Woman Waiting Lyrics

I left a woman waiting
I met her sometime later
She said, I see your eyes are dead
What happened to you, lover?
What happened to you, my lover?
What happened to you, lover?
What happened to you?
And since she spoke the truth to me
I tried to answer truthfully
Whatever happened to my eyes
Happened to your beauty
Happened to your beauty
What happened to your beauty
Happened to me

We took ourselves to someone's bed
And there we fell together
Quick as dogs and truly dead were we
And free as running water
Free as running water
Free as running water
Free as you and me
The way it's got to be
The way it's got to be, lover

Listening to Cohen's older stuff makes me realize that he had little respect for women.

    I thought he loved them.

I think you're both right. I feel like he was more a coward though, I love his music anyways.

@Esmeralda Garibaldi I feel Cohen tackled quite some aspects of love (more than women). There's an idea that he did all these warm & beautiful songs of love, but in reality what he did was paint that, yes, but also the decadent, filthy and sometimes vengeful part of love, especially when he was young and probably more involved with women.

This does not mean disrespect. In fact, that shouldn't even be an issue in the creation of art. Cohen was a strong free creative force and he didn't enclosed his aim in any socially correct voice. I think his full picture of human issues so common to all of us was that made his work so relatable.

I think it's the other way around. He seemingly worshiped women. A large portion of his pre-Various Positions lyrics were about love, sex and women in general. Virtually every song on Death of a Ladies' Man is sleazy in nature and is the overall theme of the lyrics. I think it has to lot to do with Phil Spector's involvement. In fact, Cohen dropped most of the material from it from his live sets, and I think only Memories had a presence on his tours after this release, and only for a few years. Definitely his weakest work.
