I love the riffs and the interplay between lead and rhythm guitars, but I think the latter half of the song is brought down by how messy they intentionally made it. Thats the problem with the whole album for the most part, they wanted to make it super edgy and change their image a little bit but they did that by letting the instrumentation and even Claudio's vocals sometimes devolve into just random noise. I think there are ways to achieve that aesthetic and it still sound good musically

Speaking from the perspective of someone who isn’t as much of a fan of this album, I think it’s just musically not as good. Of course music is subjective, I just don’t think it’s even technically as good sounding. It doesn’t seem like Claudio’s always hitting the notes. I don’t mean to be a hater. He can sing way better than I can, I just think this isn’t one of their best albums and most people agree with me on that.

SpencerBelanger yeah... I'm sure ten speed bicycle is a metaphor for something else. I imagine it's like a dream. keeps getting faster until you Wake up. by the time you do Wake up, you can only remember the last part which in this case is the bicycle.

its a strange world we live in.

The song is not entirely palatable to a mass market. It incorporates harsh timbres, jarringly disparate sections, and is overall dark in tone. It is a very depressing lead in to the album, much like the followup track Guns of Summer. Compare to the more defiant Here We Are Juggernaut, which still uses some harsh sounds, but is overall more traditional in songwriting and has a less negative lyric.

Personally, I think all of Year of the Black Rainbow is brilliant, and this song is fantastic in its place in the story, but I also recognize that musical tastes are extremely subjective and many people respond with heightened emotions both positive and negative, leading to a lot of frustration.

it's an open interpretation in the concept it's a war between good and evil but in reality Claudio said it's about embracing your flaws no matter what.and that's pretty much with all his music he said that he leaves it for us to interpret in our way or watever way we can relate to it.to me it means that good always prevails in the end and that evil will never win in my view.so take it in whatever way you can relate to it

I really recommend getting all 8 of their albums and just putting them on shuffle until you find what you vibe to. All of the albums except The Color Before the Sun are based on a story called the Amory Wars.

Can someone who knows the C&C story explain to me what's going on here?

Evil Mage guy named Wilhelm Ryan starts a war to try and gain power in their universe known as "Heaven's Fence." The video seems to be depicting a battle, possibly around some mining facility that Ryan was using to harvest the energy of the "keywork", the energy that holds all the planets and stars together in that triangular pattern (The band's logo).

sounds cool and all but what happens at the end, what was that orb thing, what did it get planted into, and could details of this battle be drawn out a bit more clear

+TheECP Claudio also said it's a lesson in reality too that you shouldn't be afraid to be special and that your flawed make you powerful and this video is very powerful .I like that fact that Claudio said that as fans we can relate and interpet the music in our own way it's awesome

One of the things I love most about Coheed is that they adapt their sound to the story. YOTBR has a very somber, yet dark and even angry plot so Claudio dips into the aggressiveness if Wilhelm and the pain of the Doctor. Afterman albums both have a sense of the five stages of grief. SSTB is hard to explain so I'll keep away. But IKSSE:3 has that same aggressive tone with the darker parts, but also emotional and crazy (looking at you here Al). Good Apollo has an insanity to match the Writing Writer's own demented and tortured self. And the over all sense of finality in No World for Tomorrow needs no explaining.

I'm still looking for a good online resource for the amory wars mythos. ive been spending the last week trying to decipher the lyrics, but regardless of character claudio always writes in first person, which means that i can glean events from the lyrics but have no idea who is involved in the events. can yoi recommend the best way to read and learn the whole storu without having to order physical copies of the comic books?

+Stevo Worline This song takes place during the War of the Mages when Wilhelm Ryan is securing power from the other Mages along Heaven's Fence....at least that's what I'm lead to believe, the battles during IKSSE3 the battles were between the resistance and the Red Army.

Hey I'm newish and I was going to get the comics, what should I start with.

The Second Stage Turbine Blade and then In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3. You only really need to read those two since Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One is supposedly going to be remade. Also, Year of the Black Rainbow isn't a comic, but a novel.

@Chapter Epilogue I feel exactly the same way! Black Rainbow was my first album, and it'll always be my 2ND fave behind Good Apollo. Though its their underrated album, I feel like the lyrics tell a better Amory Wars story than any other album.

I'm not sure why so many people thought very little of this album. I for one appreciated the experimentation. Though I will always consider Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Vol I: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness to be my favorite album, I certainly love this album as well. There were a lot of solid tracks on there and I got mostly enjoyment out of this album. Yes it did depart from the Co&Ca that everyone was used to, but for me it was still the band that I knew and loved. 

But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

YOTBR is actually my second favorite Coheed album. The Afterman being the first. And out of all the music I've listened to, When Skeletons Live is my favorite.

Vevo losing money for people not clicking/watching their ads is no skin off my back. I'm all for a company getting what they deserve when they make a good product or promote that product well, but the way Vevo (and I'm sure others) are advertising is not something I support. Either they change to a more user friendly way to promote their other videos, or the AdBlock stays on.
