Coe, David Allan - Heart Worn Highway Lyrics

On this Heart Worn Highway
Into the heat of night
Look in your rearview mirror
Tucson is out of sight

Headin' for Oklahoma
Texas is still ahead
Face on a Wanted poster
Wanted alive or dead

Destined to die an outlaw
Braggin' in every town
Two steps ahead of danger
Waiting to bring you down

Cling to your loaded pistol
Keep it right by your side
Haul ass on Heart Worn, run away
This could be your last ride

I was on Heart Worn Highway
Too late to turn back now
You made the bed you lay in
And they'll find your trail somehow

You just gotta keep on runnin'
From all the things you've done
Out on that Heart Worn Highway
You'll never buy the gun

Destined to die an outlaw
Braggin' in every town
Two steps ahead of danger
Waiting to bring you down

Cling to your loaded pistol
Keep it right by your side
Out on some Heart Worn Highway
This could be your last ride

Destined to die an outlaw
Confined in every town
Two steps ahead of danger
Waiting to bring you down

Cling to your loaded pistol
Now, keep it right by your side
Out on some Heart Worn Highway
This could be your last ride

Great song tainted by the "south rise again" business. I know such a sentiment is attractive to a lot of folks, but it also shows a lack of awareness of the heartaches suffered by African-Americans. Just in case it didn't sink in... let me just simply say, the heartache of a lot of FELLOW AMERICANS.

    b.... b....

    brent biles I agree

Hey Bleeding Heart. Sing me another verse of "Look what Government Schoolings taught me"! What a load Dude. You need to be deprogrammed quickly orjust come to Montgomery, Al and visit the SPLC and then saunter over to the Lynching Museum for the afternoon. Long live my home in the Heart of Dixie!

Get bent yankee! The South Will Rise Again!

You couldn't have said it better. My folks and their folks were all workers hardly making a living in Europe, always drafted in all sorts of wars... But - they never were owned by anyone, none could violate their homes and families, all of which happened to US slaves from generation to generation.

    b.... b....

@Ivan54321 europeans have a very long history of slavery guy don't come here to act morally superior

  13. F.... B....

I can't help but wish for the 1970's again. Thank you God for that time

    F.... B....

Fleeger Briggs the 1970s was a huge Crime tsunami lmao. Music was good though.

  14. J.... A....

The part from 1:00 reminds me of José Feliciano's song "Qué será". It is almost identical.

    J. A. Antón it's a common thing to do with a D chord on a guitar

I’m not sure why this version’s better than the DVD version but I like it

David Allan Coe, a product of the culture he was born into, was a racist and not nearly a great of a mind or philosopher (as I see it) than all the other hero of Heartworn Highways. IMHO, he's out of place in this group...a group of legends - for me, he's an average imitator at best.

    J.... C....

Simon yes, but the outlaw movement in country music wasn't about outlaws, it was about following and spearheading different conventions that the mainstream country music prevalent of that time had promoted. Sure, some content in outlaw country may have dealt with gun-toting desert pirates, but that's not what the definition of "outlaw country" entails.

    J.... C....

+Pike fisherman maybe it's because Coe sees the Confederacy not as a traitorous, racist movement which killed a few hundred thousand American lives, but instead looks at the movement through this bullshit "golden age" lens? ( The line "the south will rise again appears in this song 3 times in a positive light every instance)

Maybe because he subscribes to a divisive and frankly useless north vs. south romanticism? ("I guess you'd be proud to know your grandsons
Never crossed that Mason Dixon line")

    J.... C....

Kenny How do you know I'm not white?

How do you know that I'm ignorant about country music?

You're making some pretty big assumptions about me, friend.

And by the way, what does it matter if I'm not white? Do you think only white people are allowed to enjoy country music? What century are you from?

    J.... C....

James Chapman actually Townes van zandt grew up in a privileged family, while Coe more or less grew up in correctional facilities... if you're into comparing outlaw credibility

    J.... C....

@S.R Woodward Townes also lived a pretty impoverished life

  19. B.... W....

This song is great country music.

Sorry to be positive about that ... but when I once come to USA, I'll be sure to visit those places ... and none of this glamour-style las-vegas-cake. Not that I think the people there are bad, god no ... It's just not my aim and style, as I believe ...

I may belong to what once was called "old europe" by one of your weird old bumpers (hahaha...), but when I listen to such beauties of a song, I know that there is someone singing and telling stories which could happen here around the bend ... Hard working people (fuck about the redundancy of such an attribute) who just want to live a decent life - and if they could never would have to answer questions about their political point of view regarding immigration tragedies ... Gentlemen from over the ocean, ladies from above the Gulf Stream, the shit that hits hits here too ... btw, Springsteen saved my youth, and I saw him rocking in Zurich, and that's where Ilve nearby. Respect!!! Pizza Tapes if you do not get the Pizza!!!

  24. j.... ....

David Allan Coe is a true Poet. I still sing all the old songs grandpa taught me.

  25. z.... ....

Shame he had to resort recording the x rated albums just to stay alive. He is one of my favorite songwriters when he is in a more serious tone

    z.... ....

im not sure thats why he did those x rated albums ...he had a string of hits just prior to them & was very relevant ...its almost like he did those albums in spite of his success in a weird way

    z.... ....

+Donald Pittman he declared bankruptcy and had to waive the rights of all his previous songs so he couldn't make a dime off of his older material

    z.... ....

Hard to comment on any of his decision making....given that I'm wearing my boots, and he's probably wearing his...But I know I've made some mistakes....I used to get drunked up and raise hell...I never once in my whole life started shit with anyone, nor have I ever mistreated a lady, but way back when...I sure as hell didnt turn down a chance to hook and jab....Nowadays my two best buddies are my daughters, and I often look back on that behavior and wonder what they would think......My point is,damn...we've all done some shit we regret, but its up to us to decide if it was right or wrong...your opinion or mine means nothing.

    z.... ....

zepfan96 david sang those for his 1% bikers and not because he needed to make money..

    z.... ....

I’m glad he recorded those x rated albums. It just proved he was a real country outlaw in the true sense of the word
