Cockney Rebel - Understand Lyrics

Shall I begin from here to tell everything?
Relinquish honour in order to make it ring?
You'd have to make me promise
You won't expect too much from this
You'll just be happy with the gold that I bring

We've been playing cat and mouse now for far too long
I can't let it simmer and just go gruelling on
I have to make my move
I've still got so much to prove
You can't imagine the life that I've had

If I could put the words together
If I could put the words together
If I could put, put the words together
You'd understand

You've been a magnet stuck in my memory
I'd hide if I could but I'm red in a yellow sea
Consider me lost in aspic
I'd give in but that's not my schtick
You'll haunt me forever, I know that you will

If I could put the words together
If I could put the words together
If I could put, put the words together
You'd understand

Shall I begin from here to tell everything?
Relinquish honour in order to make it ring?
You'd have to give me promise
You won't expect too much from this
You'll just be happy with the gold that I bring

If I could put the words together
If I could put the words together
If I could only put the words together
You'd understand

If I could, if I could, if I could...

  24. J.... A....

Nice to hear. My greatest influence was John Peel, hence my eclectic music taste. If you ever get a chance to see Steve Harley, you must. I saw him in Birmingham a couple of years ago where he played his first two albums in their entirety, track by track....he's still awesome.

  25. P.... D....

The biggest influences on my musical taste are my two Uncles, Martin and Terry. My uncle Terry s sadly no longer with us but he gave me so much knowledge and encouraged me to listen to ALL types of music. When he passed, I received a big part of his record collection, this was in it. I can't hear this without thinking of Terry and how he opened the musical eyes of a 10 year old boy (Now 46).  Thank you for posting.

  26. M.... R....

always thought him a one off genius ever since i saw him in 1973 complete with boiler suit eye lash and bowler,in dunstable civic centre .

Sang this to my first girlfriend in 76 ( I was 15 ) she laughed she had all the emotional and intellectual content of a fungus , just want to thank Steve for imparting such wisdom and beautiful songs to my youth , I feel his personality , words and uniqueness impressed itself onto part of my own psyche to which I am eternally grateful....

    t.... s....

Same thing happened to me...sang to a girl I was crazy about ..she laughed in my face...crushed....but in retrospect I know she was an amoeba
