Cockburn, Bruce - The Coldest Night Of The Year Lyrics
I was up all night, socializing
Trying to keep the latent depression from crystalizing
Now the sun is lurking just behind the Scarborough horizon
And you're not even here
I took in Yonge Street at a glance
Heard the punkers playing
Watched the bikers dance
Everybody wishing they could go to the south of France
And you're not even here
On the coldest night of the year
Hey look at me now
It's taken me so long to catch on to what's going on
Inside this skin
When two lovers really love there's nothing there
But this suddenly compact universe
Skin and breath and hair
I watched the all night TV show
In the all night bar
I drove all the people home
I was the one with the car
Now I'm sitting here alone and sleepless
And wondering where you are
And wishing you were here
On the coldest night of the year

Cockburn, Bruce The Coldest Night Of The Year Comments
Can't believe this song is 40 years old. Where does the time go?
I love the rhythm riff
Ah Bruce finally met him October 2019 ..love this song he has no real idea how much I love his music this is one example why
Loved the song for a long time... *love* this photoshow;... Thanks!
reminds me when my feet were cold and living in cabbagetown Toronto when my parents didn't have a lot of money. I survived and love this song
Comprendre.
What a beautiful evocative vid!! Thank you! I love T.O. and I live in Edmonton, so I can relate to winter urban scenes!
Took in Yonge St at a glance, heard punkers playing, watched the bikers dance ... - ah was something to do back in the day ... just cruise Yonge St and take in the sights.
I lived in Scarborough from 1990 to 95. The best years of my life. Thank you Toronto.
Beautiful song and beautiful pictures. Living in AZ now but miss TO BIG TIME!!!
This might just be one of the 20 best Canadian songs ever written!!!
He's a Canadian icon......and most underrated and underappreciated singer-songwriter of his (or any) time.
Brings back a lot of memories of growing up in cabbagetown Toronto
pure Canadiana from the poet man, and the not so subtle sax, the greatest winter song
Always love to hear my old friend from Ottawa doing what he always did best.
Oh i remember this sing playing during a blizzard in Denver, Colorado maybe '84.
you can stop saying you're sorry and start convincing me before i let go
I left my heart💓 in Toronto😘 gotta go back😎👍👌✌
Hey, I was in the Car
Any song that mentions Scarborough, Yonge Street, snow, and has a saxophone solo.. destined to be a Canadian anthem.
dfw to yyz....I'm comin home
Bravo!
Well done.

You Nailed t.
holllyy shit, that ending chorus guitar riff...it speaks to me
I remember EZ rock was playing this on the eve of the ice storm of Jan 1999 in Toronto. It was -50C.
I like the guitar sound he got on this...
A true Great Canadian Icon! Makes me so proud to be Canadian, Thanks Bruce forever!
Thank you so very much.
Canadians certainly seem to have a way with a lyric. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Peart, Bruce Cockburn. The Band, Ian and Sylvia, The Guess Who and on and on.
Just love this song!!
The song is a reflection on the assassination of John Lennon. It wasn't that cold in NY where it happened, on Dec.8, 1980, just 42F. I may well have been in Toronto, or maybe he means cold as a metaphor for what happened.
Scott Davis I believe it's about his separation and dissolution of his marriage, and the loneliness he had over loosing her and his daughter.
Toronto means so much to so many people
this is Canada. immigrate at your own peril
I always felt Bruce had a cold when he recorded this song... goes with the song.
My VERY favourite track of his has to be, 'Feet Fall'. from the album, 'Sunwheel Dance', it was incredibly hypnotic for me, in the day!
wow I miss Bruce's music...., love him
Thank you, YYZChap72!
Cockburn's music seems timeless to me....lyrics more pertinent today than ever...journeyman guitar playing...melodies that stick in your head.
THE BEST CLEANEST FRIENDLIEST CITIES IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!
LOVE YOU TORONTO ❤❤❤👍🏼👍🏼❤❤❤❤❤❤
Song is about coldest night in Toronto and scarbourough
You haven't experienced cold until you've lived in Northern Ontario. Toronto cold is damp. Timmins cold is just friggin' cold!
-37C right now, wonderful song , Thanks BruceRead more Show less Reply 1
And you don't know cold till you live in the Arctic, like I did for 3 years, so go on be Canadian and beat your chest with pride about who has the crappiest weather, it must be a Canadian tang.
Awesome video / brings back memories... I saw him there live in early 70s ~ thanks
I really like song. thanks
really a nice tune
Seemed appropriate to play this after last night waiting for the bus that never came.
I play it every year....as winter approaches...it counts as one of my Christmas fave's too...
I always think of this as a Christmas time song, too.
One of the best videos of what Toronto is. Besides being a great song and artist
Just Awesome!!!
Best song ever!

great song. Also check out Murray Mclaughlin - Down by the Henry Moore. That song capture Toronto but in a less demure way. Both truly Canadian songs though.
Bruce and Murray were roommates for awhile!

Every single one of Bruce Cockburns songs touches something in me too......it’s as if he’s been at the parties, and dinners, and walking down Younge Street, hung out on Queen Street, frequented this city bars, been right on the edge with us as we tasted life and as he watches and experiences from the peripheral we live out our Canadianess in dignity and Bruce sifts through the crap and finds blossoms. Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, and there are others, but for me, Bruce and Gord bring me Toronto. I can listen to these Canadian troubadours in my quiet country home and shut my eyes and let those Singers paint a tapestry rich and heartbreakingly beautifully haunting. Takes me beck. Soundtracks got my youth.
Murray and Bruce toured in Japan together in '78.
What are you Assardee???., ha ha
What are you Assardee???., ha ha
A town is what you make of it... if it's cold it's your perception... I adore our town!
Living in Toronto is like a bad marriage for me, a marriage of convenience , I do not think of Toronto as my home, it is the city I have to work in, the people are cold all year around ,especially the women.
+Joseph Forest is a Loser
Joseph Forest I beg to differ!!!
Try going to a Toronto church on Sunday. And giving your heart to Jesus. Pray for Divine help in getting along with your wife. Washing the dishes might put you in a better light with her too. Jesus washed His disciples feet. Blessings!
Whenever the weather get very cold I like to listen to this song
Love it!
I could listen to Bruce forever but for now im going to bed. Goodnight
Awesome song...miz yah Toronto
My favorite Bruce Cockburn song!
Me too. By far.
'by far' is a strong statement, given this fucker's talent and discography... tough to argue with ya though. @Paul Sawyer
Toronto is cold, in more ways then just the weather.
+Atwonder Japan Why because we don't jerk off to poop porn and eat bait?
+Essardee ふざかんなよくそやろ!That's go FUCK yourself in Japanese, but I guess you already knew that judging by your intelligent remark. Twit X 2.
Tropic of Capricorn,Tropic of Cancer,I remember listening to this on the top floor of the Holiday Inn in Edmonton mid February wishing I was back in Toronto. Doesn't really matter where you are, theres always a coldest night of the year.
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lay off the Toronto bashing just for the length of this song. Fuck Sakes Eh
But the rest of Ontario would lose it's cultural identity! Haha
This is my all time favourite song. I never get tired of listening to it.... Thanks Bruce.
a little piece of Canada on a cold winter's day
-37C right now, wonderful song , Thanks Bruce
To say I enjoyed this is an understatement. I don't know why, but this touches every part of me.
Me too. It's so real.
If you are Canadian, it should.
I'm not Canadian, but I've slept in Canadian winters (and Canadian women), and yea if you haven't hooked up with a Nova Scotian girl who lived for a time near Toronto, you haven't lived. That's what ya meant, right? I agree with ya.@flungingpictures
@Joachim Kane
Well, Joachim,
I can't say that I have "slept in Canadian women" literally. I won't fit even if I cut open her stomach, like one would do a horse...
;)
We need a #HamOnt version this week! :)
Great song!
Toronto.....where you can't tell what you're getting because on a cold night all the hookers on Jarvis are wearing snow pants...
no...not really I just made that up but Saskatoon or Edmonton who knows EH
+Essardee are there still hookers on Lakeshore?
+Essardee No. They are locked in chains in your parents basement where you keep them as you whack off to Donny Osmond LP records while dressed like Sailor Moon.Twit.
Take a hike fish breath.
Took you two months to reply to this comment.....? You DO spend a lot of time in your parents basement.
Awesome Man<< Yessssss<<<<
Grew up in Scarborough...ah..partyin at the bluffs..Thks Bruce,,

Lone Wolf yup, me too....
Thank you for making a slideshow fitting of this beautiful Toronto song.
Thankfully don't see many "cold" nights where I live now but as I sit here in the 40C southern summer it almost makes me miss the S ON winters....almost
Good things there are underground tunnels.
i love song,,
Very well done love the tune and remember Toronto back about 30yrs or so ago!! just isn't the same!!! The old neighborhood is completely different Crazy Busy!! All my Italian and Portuguese friends gone it's all oriental now!!!
wow!!!!!30 years ago was a long time, I was barely 7 years old but I did grow up listening to the best of music. Went to St. Francis school. Dosnt even exist anymore. Your right it is depressing. But once in a blue moon I drive down my old street. (Claremont. st.) even that is not the same anymore. keep in touch buddy. boa noite.!!!
@Steve Belchior I guess seeing different people makes it worst eh,..... or different, get out meet those people or does people from different cultures scares you.
@Amanda Marshall No...it didn't scare me..meeting new people is always fun...but it's not the same without the old people...
Nothing is the same without your friends sort of like me when I left the Native reserve in Northern Ontario but wow the new life I made with the many cultures that is in Toronto. I couldn't believe there is a whole new world of interesting and wonderful people to get to know and explore what makes us different but unique, get one chance on this planet earth, sometimes out with old and in with the new, but always have the old life in your heart and the new ones in your soul as my Elders told me.
Happy New Year Buddy...!!!!
What a city Toronto is... Many great loves there
Wonderful!
Just heard this on the radio
@Brett S Not a chance we'd hear this on local radio. We're in Tennessee and listen to CFZM AM740 on the radio at night, and online in the mornings.
Polar Arctic Blast, it is surely the coldest night of the year.
DAMN, I hope so.
-26C/-37C with the wind chill out here, 2 hours NW of "The Big Smoke" (aka: Toronto).
I was trying to keep something from crystalizing.

Bruce Cockburn, a Canadian treasure!..thank you for sharing...great slide show
Brings back lots of memories listening to this song. This song use to play alot way back in the 80s when i was a little kid. Its a nice song.
great Kanuck
American you say? I don't think so....
Bruce Cockburn a true American hero
You do know where he is from, right? A proud Canadian through and through.
LOL, it is funny how we true Canadians separate ourselves from our southern neighbours, but we are all American's. North Americans yet! WE just let them proclaim it because they need it....We don't, we know who we are and "Proud of It!"...Bruce is Canadian.
Brilliant!!!! Just sent it to my son Daniel.....who was born here....me too...his Mother....His Father abducted him to Gdynia, Poland when he was two. His Father, I believe keeps tabs on his computer, mobile and such.....hope that he get this song. I love you Daniel. Mama xoxox.
