Cockburn, Bruce - Stolen Land Lyrics

From Tierra del Fuego to Ungava Bay
The history of betrayal continues to today
The spirit of Almighty Voice, the ghost of Anna Mae
Call like thunder from the mountains, you can hear them say
It's a stolen land

Apartheid in Arizona, slaughter in Brazil
If bullets don't get good PR there's other ways to kill
Kidnap all the children, put 'em in a foreign system
Bring them up in no-man's land where no one really wants them
It's a stolen land

Stolen land, but it's all we've got
Stolen land, and there's no going back
Stolen land, and we'll never forget
Stolen land, and we're not through yet

In my mind I catch a picture, big black raven in the sky
Looking at the ocean, sail reflected in black eye
Sail as white as heroin, white like weathered bones
Rum and guns and smallpox gonna change the face of home
In this stolen land...

If you're like me you'd like to think we've learned from our mistakes
Enough to know we can't play god with others' lives at stake
So now we've all discovered the world wasn't only made for whites
What step are you gonna take to try and set things right
In this stolen land

Stolen land, but it's all we've got
Stolen land, and there's no going back
Stolen land, and we'll never forget
Stolen land, and we're not through yet

Good Lord is he the Original Composer??!!

    Compared to the Studio version,
This Soggy, Sedative Saturated, Vapid version doesn't even sound like the Same Song!!!

I agree totally. I saw him play the version that's on "Waiting For A Miracle", back in the mid 80's. Fergus Jemison Marsh was on bass, and Hugh Marsh was on violin. This version sucks, sorry Bruce.

This isn't indicative of his best work. I don't like this at all....and I've been a fan of Bruce's since 83', and seen him in concert 4 times. Saw him do the good version of this in mid 80's on the World of Wonders tour. It was awesome.....he did is as one of the encore songs, and with that funky bass Fergus Marsh was playing everybody was up and dancing, despite the efforts of the yellow jacketed security guards to stop it....Bruce actually reprimanded them for keeping people from dancing...after he said something to them...over the mic, they relented and let us get up and dance. It was an amazing memory. I was 15 years old and had one of the best nights of my life that night in London, Ontario. 35 years later in the same city I finally met this most inspirational artist, and he was cool with it being filmed too. Great guy.

Cockburn understands the need for reconciliation. The imagery in the song is pretty good - but then he is an accomplished songwriter if you know his work.
