Clash, The - The Card Cheat Lyrics
There's a solitary man crying, "Hold me."
It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!
With a card up his sleeve, what would he achieve?
It means nothing!
To the opium den and the barroom gin
In the Belmont chair playing violins
The gambler's face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades
But the dealer just stares
There's something wrong here, he thinks
And shot dead
He only wanted more time
Away from the darkest door
But his luck it gave in
As the dawn light crept in
And he lay on the floor
From the Hundred Year War to the Crimea
With a lance and a musket and a Roman spear
To all of the men who have stood with no fear
In the service of the King
Before you met your fate be sure you
Did not forsake your lover
May not be around anymore

Clash, The The Card Cheat Comments
Their lyrics are amazing
[Chorus]
There's a solitary man cryin', "Hold me"
It's only because he's a'lonely
And if the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!
If he only had time to tell of all of the things he planned
With a card up his sleeve, what would he achieve?
It means nothin'
To the opium dens and the barroom gin
In the Belmont chair playing violin
The gambler's face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades
But the dealer just stares
"There's something wrong here", he thinks
The gambler is seized and forced to his knees
And shot dead
He only wanted more time
Away from the darkest door
But his luck it gave in
As the dawn light crept in
And he lay on the floor
From the Hundred Year War to the Crimea
With a lance and a musket and a Roman spear
To all of the men who have stood with no fear
In the service of the King
Before you met your fate be sure you
Did not forsake
Your lover
May not be around anymore
(Repeat 1st verse)
I'm 42 and 'discovered' the Clash last year. Only knew a couple of hits, but never paid attention to their discography. And now: stole the musical room in my heart. With a big kaboom they entered. Every decade has it's gems. That's why I love music and want to be open to all kinds of music, despite the age or style. London Calling is now an important piece in my album collection. Very versatile album.
The epitome.of deep cut. Classic AF.
This could honestly be the most underrated song of all time
Bruce Springsteen vibes
That why they're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the Brilliance of songwriting not just Punk but different styles love it they are our worlds band.
A little bit of Springsteen in this song?
But with the english touch 👌
As far as musicianship is concerned the clash are miles ahead of sex pistols. They didn't only know how to play unlike the pistols they were brilliant at that.
The Sex Pistols were a manufactured band. A joke compared to The Clash.
Maybe the best lyrics ever written
My favorite clash song
Excellent song. Personally i think it would fit better on Sandinista.
I can see that..only about a year apart..lots of similar ideas.
Anyone else got this pegged for their funeral?
Death or glory for me m8!!
@marie brownlow nice one like it
これがチェインギャング の元ネタか。
The only band that matters!
There's a solitary man crying "hold me"
It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!
This fucking song is fantastic
Off of London calling:
1. The card cheat
2. Clampdown
3. Death or Glory
4. London Calling
5.Train in Vain
6. Lovers rock
Hard to make a bad list off of London Calling, mine needs to Include Lost in the Supermarket and Guns of Brixton.
What about Spanish bombs
London Calling stays at the first spot imho, Can pump my body with energy anytime.
Jimmy jazz is also cool
What about hateful
Gigantes!!
Jesus Christ, the audio in the other upload of this song sucks.
one of their most underrated songs
That piano blows my mind <3
El piano es asombroso
