Clash, The - Stay Free Lyrics
we met when we were in school
never took no shit from no one, we weren't fools
the teacher says we're dumb
we're only having fun
we piss on everyone
when we got thrown out i left without much fuss
an' weekends we'd go dancing
down streatham on the bus
you always made me laugh
got me in bad fights
play me pool all night
smokin' menthol
you were down the crown planning your next move
go on a nicking spree
hit the wrong guy
each of you get three
years in brixton
i did my very best to write
how was butlins?
were the screws too tight?
when you lot get out
were gonna hit the town
we'll burn it fuckin' down
to a cinder
cos years have passed and things have changed
and i move anyway i wanna go
i'll never forget the feeling i got
when i heard that you'd got home
an' i'll never forget the smile on my face
'cos i knew where you would be
an' if you're in the crown tonight
have a drink on me
but go easy...step lightly...stay free

I pissed on a screw in Risley 7 days down the chokey it was well worth it he was standing under my window and was bored . That was back in 84 STAY FREE LIKE I HAVE GOT OUT IN 91 JAIL IS NO GOOD ITS YA FAMILY WHO GETS PUNISHED.
Stay Free is on the SHORT short list of songs for if I were ever told I could only hear ONE more song in my life. It's gotten me through the best and worst of times. There's always those couple of lads, though, that this song never fails to reminds you of. Some, you wonder where they are now, and some, you wish they were still here, if nothing else, so you could wonder where they are.....
Stay free - always. Met the boys in MCR before the gig (Apollo with slits, that's another story) and walked away with a signed copy of the album. Nice guys, nice times.
who the fuck put dislike????

Funny how this masterpiece gets lost between the first album and London Calling, I bought this when I was 15yrs old and still believe it’s one of the best albums I’ve ever heard......
.

Unless you are English & possibly from London I would say it was impossible to fully get the lyrics of this song!

I went to a ton of Clash shows in New York. Always stood mashed against the stage. Just about at every show there was a cute little blonde girl, smashed against the stage with us. She would always yell for the band to play "Stay Free." They never did. Then years later at one show at the Pier, once again that cute little blonde girl was there. I was smashed next to her....and the band played "Stay Free." We looked at each other, smiled so wide, jumped up and down, and went crazy dancing to the song.
best band ever awesome

The teacher say's we're done, we're only havin' fun you know we'd piss on everyone in the classroom ......... Classic
Mick's masterpiece part. This song represents pure nostalgia, sense of freedom and do what you want to do. Thank you Clash for this great tune.
I used to bunk off school and go to Streatham on the bus with my free school bus pass!! Happy days!!
This reminds me so much of me and my friend in school, the only two in the class who didn't give a damn about good grades. It was only a year ago, but I'd give everything I own to go back then, even for just a day.
Anyone remember in the movie Rude Boy starring Ray Gange when he is watching them play this song? If not go check it out, it is an amazing movie.
Best of country song ! I love it
I want this played at my funeral. this is a beautiful song and mick, oh mick is a beautiful person. the late 70s mick is the most beautiful thing ever. but now back to the song. it's great. it's so beautiful and the intro is amazing.
que hermoso tema
Can't stop listening to this awesome song!!
The biggest discovery I made about the clash was when I realized Mick Jones was in the band.

You either die too young or get to play this song whenever you think about that childhood friend who died.
RIP TK, you always were free
The best anthem ever for alienated kids - nearly forgot about how good the Clash were until I heard White man in Hammersmith Palais on T2Trainspotting ......Stay Free was one of my favourite songs, and still is....Cause years have passed and things have changed
And I move anyway I want to go
I'll never forget the feeling I got
When I heard that you'd got home.............Go easy, step lightly, Stay Freelove it
Love it !!
STAY FREE!!!!
My favorite song. Good lyrics, good melody, and a perfect ending.
why the hell do 54 people dislike this :[
52 "people" like the Offspring
My experience with The Clash has been like this: I only knew Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay Or Should I Go. Then, I fell in love with all The Clash(Album). Give 'Em Enough Rope was too different for me. London Calling was like listening to OK Computer, I knew from the first song it was gonna be life changing. Sandista is still growing on me and Combat Rock is Combat Rock. I still change favorite songs every few months, and have been for the last 3 years. Stay Free is probably their best song though. We'll see in a few months.
Great that people still finding The Clash today......xx
I wish I could pick a favorite album. I feel like Give Em Enough Rope is my all time favorite. But then I listen to the debut album. Then I listen to London Calling, which was my introduction. Then, I realize how much I love Sandinista, and how many hours of suicide-inducing commutes it got me through. And then I realize how beautiful of a song Death Is A Star is, and how much I love Combat Rock.
Super Black Market Clash is also a feast of a sonic journey. As is From Here To Eternity.
Fuck me I love the Clash.
They were still going when I first bought the 1977 first album 'the clash' when I was age 13, and am still here 34 years later, good choice!
a sometimes forgotten Clash classic. Genuinely gives me goosebumps at the "step lightly" bit!
I love that part! "Step light. . .ly. . ." Great stuff.
still love this song...great band. Saw in 1980 at Capital Theatre, Sydney. 17yr of age, that same year also the ramones..same venue, fond memories
Gary Barlow did you tell them you were the person he was singing about and get a free drink?
Smokin' menthol ... :)
