Clarks, The - Born Too Late Lyrics
Vincent will you teach me how to paint
Teresa will I ever be a saint
John I really think your songs are great
I was born too late
Cassius will you show me how to fight
Thomas A. I think I see the light
I was born tonight
I've had a hard time leaving this town
I've been losing everything that I've found
I'm gonna search the sky, kiss the ground
Build it up and tear it back down
I've had a hard time leaving this place
I'm gonna curse the sky, hit the ground
What goes up comes tumbling down
Jimi show me how you play that thing
Elvis will I ever be a king
and Jerry all the joy and love you bring
I was born to sing
Martin Luther King show me the way
Jesus Buddha teach me how to pray
Christopher I think I see the bay
I was born today

Great song and vocal. Love lyrics (Michelle Horrell) that make you think and are open to interpretation. Not sure whatever happened to her, but she was definitely a free-thinking original.

A lot of Pittsburghers are proud of our teams. Some are proud of our food. I'm proud of the Clark's and this song. It's my Pittsburgh happiness.
This comment made me want to wave a terrible towel while cracking open an ice cold IC Light
Shitsburgh pride i see
Joe Flacco
You're on a video about a band from Pittsburgh, what were you expecting exactly?
@SuperTugz just given you'll not u yenz or how ever u say it a hard time
@Stephen Norman Never had a Pirmantis sandwich? Holy cow, let me know the next time you're in town. My treat.
I went to there concert
sounds a lot like Local H - All The Kids Are Right
thank u ppl for the support on this video means a lot I had to make a new account cause I forgot my password on the other one
This song makes me think of my 4 yea old cousin that has cancer 😢 ANDREWS AVENGERS 😁
I love this song! I heard it a long time ago but never knew the name of it. Great job w/ the lyric video by the way.
if the clarks knew anything about Muhammad Ali they would have known how disrespectful it is to refer to him as cassius.
Are you retarded Ali changed his name to get out of having to go to war. I doubt he would've ever changed it if it wasn't war time
Maybe they are talking about Cassius who killed Julius Caesar, Cassius fought for what he believed in
Does anyone give a damn about Muhammad Ali?
Parker Marks that’s not why he changed it
so this was there song i thought it was someone else for a long time now... but i wasnt sure who it was. they really are a great band
I heard this on iheartradio. Love it!

first time i heard this song i was naming everyone he was talking about and it was blowing my mind so hard. great fuckin song and even better refrences
4G8THS i cant think of johns lost name, i know i know him but cant think of it
Thomas Alva Edison
Just saw these guys at the AAABA game the other day and they were great! Great local band!
Yes...in case you're wondering...Jerry Lewis did sing. A lot of them were funny ones.
I always thought the Jerry they were talking about was Jerry Lewis. "All the Joy and love you bring" can't describe him any better. But then again, could also be Jerry Lee Lewis too. Nobody could pound on a piano the way he could! I love songs that leave you guessing. lol
i love the song but im the ass who disliked it hahahahaha!!!!!!!
Might have been "Thomas E." the Pittsburgese turns it into an A possibly?
Joe Fallecker His middle name was Alva
They are awesome. I go see them at the railroaders museum in Altoona every year. They sound just as good live.
I love this band alot. I'm from Pittsburgh and I have never seen them in concert but would lover to. Alot of my friends have told me that they are really great.
@VioletWolf24 He sings everyone's first names, not their last names which would be easier to identify them by.
@TheVincefrank there talking Thomas A. who invented the lightbulb .....wow!
we listened to this in Commarts today, ahah i love it now!
@theresasharkinmysoup the lead guitarist is my neighbor and old guitar teacher O.o
Listen i'm from Pittsburgh, if you don't know who The Clarks are around here, you just need to leave
Wow... 0 dislikes... the clarks are VERY popular!!!!!!
Ya jinxed it.
"Who the hell is Jerry Garcia" AND "Who are the grateful dead?"
I'm embarrassed for my generation… -___-

No top comments? Well, I BETTER BE THE EFFING FIRST!!!!
@TheLyricsarelove Don't we all? I'm just glad that I can play Led Zeppelin songs, thanks to my dad. At a young age, too!
I will not vouch for the Steelers, or the Penguins, but The Clarks make me happy to be from Pittsburgh.
Lovee<33
i always assumed jimmy page for me lol wish he would show me how to play that thing <3
@Goarmy198 What do you mean "Who the hell is Jerry Garcia?!?!"
@Goarmy198 John Lennon (: And Jerry Garcia was the lead guitarist of Greatful Dead.
@Goarmy198 Really?
my cousin chuck helped them come famous...hes a painter look up charles olson
I wan't to say thanks for commenting and rating my lyrics video, watch my other lyric videos to.
@SC1089 I do believe that the 'Jerry' that the Clarks were referencing was Jerry Garcia. There was an amateur music video to this song that was very popular that spread around the internet a few years ago, and the picture that they showed when that line was sung was of Jerry Lewis- which is why so many people think that the comedian is who they were referencing. However, at the end of that paragraph, the line is 'I was born to sing,' implying that everybody mentioned was a singer- like Garcia.
@wildchld97 they're always in pittsburgh
I used this song when I was homeschooling the kids. It was a contest to see who could figure out first which people were being referred to in the song. The kids had an awesome time and actually learned a hell of a lot..by a simple song. Wish we could have seen the Clarks when they were up and coming in Pittsburgh...
@TheLastGallifreyan I agree with you on all but "Jerry". I always thought it was Jerry Lewis, the joy and love he brings referencing all the telethons and fundraising he does for sick children.
Well then again, I wish I could agree with you on "John", but it probably is Lennon since Lydon is still very much alive and performing. Someone old enough to have written this song would not be born too late to experience John Lydon.
My friend's been driving me nuts not knowing the names, so here for any other IQ-impaired people.
Verse 1:
Vincent van Gogh
Mother Teresa
John (we disagree on this: I say Lydon, she says Lennon)
Verse 2:
William Shakespeare
Cassius = Muhammad Ali
Thomas A. Edison
Verse 3:
Jimmy Hendrix
Elvis (well, it's not Costello)
Jerry Garcia
Dr. Martin Luther King
God or his rep on Earth (typically son)
Christopher Columbus
Im in pittsburgh pa and i was at a party where these guys played when they were nobody and we all thought that soon theyll be everywhere and that was like 6 years ago and now the radio itunes and youtube have em good job guys
