Clark, Petula - The Other Man's Grass (Is Always Greener) Lyrics

Life is never what it seems
We're always searching in our dreams
To find that little castle in the air
When worry starts to cloud the mind,
It's hard to leave it all behind
And just pretend you haven't got a care

There's someone else in your imagination
You wish that you were standing in their shoes
You'd change your life without much hesitation
But would you if you really had to choose?

So, don't look around
Get your feet on the ground
It's much better by far
To be just who you are

The other man's grass is always greener
The sun shines brighter on the other side
The other man's grass is always greener
Some are lucky, some are not
But just be thankful for what you've got

Many times, it seems to me
There's someone else I'd rather be
Living in a world of make-believe
To stay in bed 'til nearly three
With nothing there to worry me
Would seem to be the life I might achieve

But deep inside, I know I'm really lucky
With happiness I've never known before
And just as long as you are there beside me
I know that I could ask for nothing more

Then living can start
With the love in your heart
So, with you all the time,
All the treasures I've longed for are mine

The other man's grass is always greener
The sun shines brighter on the other side
The other man's grass is always greener
Some are lucky, some are not
But I'm so thankful for what I've got

The other man's grass is always greener
The sun shines brighter on the other side
The other man's grass is always greener
Some are lucky, some are not
But I'm so thankful for what I've got

I was so lucky in the early 90s to get to see this lady live here in Derby at Markeaton park A one off open air concert Petula Clark in the park it was billed as .A free concert. She did every number perfectly with a small orchestra on stage .She told stories about Charlie Chaplin. Bert Bacharach. and others she'd met in her career. The songs were as if it was the 60s all over again she was wonderful the large crowd joined in every song Downtown .My love . Don't sleep in the subway the lot a truly unforgettable evening .

  35. Joe Mac Pherson

Of all the songs Petula Clark recorded, this is The One, that has followed me through most of my life. It resonated with me as a boy of 12, in 1967. Every time I heard it on the AM station WMEX broadcasting from Boston, Massachusetts, I thought about the words and their message. Later, I bought the LP- and after that, the same album on CD. Even now, this song returns to my thoughts when life gives me something better. The words still give me hope for a brighter tomorrow, no matter how long it takes. And Yes, I'm thankful for what I've got!

Pet is pure class....Yesterday and still to this Day!
She is often a guest on 60's on 6 on Sat. radio. Always such a pleasure to listen to her stories about recording her hits, her life and, her incredible career.
What a voice! A sweet, sweet lady too. Today's female singers should look to her for some direction with their stage presence and attitude.

    verkaforever

Couldn't agree more. One of the greatest singers of all time!

    Juliaflo

@verkaforever She was quite well known before I was even born--a child actress in numerous films.

  82. crzxr

This would probably now be seen by many as twee or naive, and decidedly banal; but it is a fine tune, brilliantly arranged, and a lyric inspiring entirely positive sentiments, and what's wrong with that? Perhaps those who say it's twee and naive have rather more wrong with them...

  83. Olga Hayashi

Check it out for the Portuguese version of this beautifull song, by BUBBY.

  84. michael rustick

    Ain't it the truth........

Pet Clark, Tony Hatch & that punchy British brass drive! What a song!!

  89. musodave

Fabulous song and what a great singer Petula Clark is - perfect diction and phrasing. Wonderful!

  90. YippeKiYayMotherFkr

    Pretty shitty city

  91. Ms Molly

    Great song.

The lyrics could easily be re-written and it could be re-titled 'The Fat Sheila's Lament'

' The other girl's arse is always leaner'

And maybe Petula could re-record it as such.

  92. centralparocker

Something about this song I always liked....oh yeah, it was done by one of the greatest performer ever!!!!

  93. lloyd edwards

i guess this type of song and its style of singing are gone forever . its a crying shame isnt it? even though there is a load of talent out there this just has a certain atmosphere to it . wonderful

  94. Josephine Saunders

    Great tune, great lyrics! x

  95. PaulDysongs

Gotta love Tony Hatch's mastery of counterpoint ! (Check out the Bass Guitar/Brass at 0.44 seconds) - This is songwriting at it's VERY best and Petula's Vocal is absolutely Immaculate

  96. steve tjehlt

Wonderful! Great tune. Soundes bigger than life! I bought this when I was a kid. Petula is just a great singer.

  97. PrimeM92

Beautiful song but sadly, for some, the other man's grass is 'really' always greener. Maybe a bit of justice in the world wouldn't go amiss in this day and age.

  98. jackdav34

I noticed 1 dislike--what's ur complaint, exactly? Great song.

  99. dinah231

    those were the days.....just superb.
