Clark, Guy - The Cape Lyrics

Eight years old with a flour sack cape tied all around his neck
He climbed up on the garage, he's figurin' what the heck, well
He screwed his courage up so tight that the whole thing come unwound
He got a runnin' start and bless his heart, he's headed for the ground

Well, he's one of those who knows that life is just a leap of faith
Spread your arms and hold your breath and always trust your cape

Now, he's all grown up with a flour sack cape tied all around his dream
And he's full of spit and vinegar and he's bustin' at the seam
Well, he licked his finger and he checked the wind, it's gonna be do or die
And he wasn't scared of nothin', boys, he was pretty sure he could fly

Well, he's one of those who knows that life is just a leap of faith
Spread your arms and hold your breath and always trust your cape

Now, he's old and gray with a flour sack cape tied all around his head
And he's still jumpin' off the garage and will be till he's dead
All these years the people said, he was actin' like a kid
He did not know he could not fly and so he did

Well, he's one of those who knows that life is just a leap of faith
Spread your arms and hold your breath and always trust your cape
Yes, he's one of those who knows that life is just a leap of faith
Spread your arms and hold your breath and always trust your cape

so i have a question.  when those souls that voted thumbs down on this die and enter hell. . . .will the reaction be endothermic or exothermic?

What you can do with a song or a poem or words. You can fly, take that leap, and keep doing it. Reality will not necessarily intervene as the story unfolds and prevails. Wear your capes proudly. Take those leaps of faith. Thanks Guy. Blowing Like A Bandit! Died in Nashville May 17 2016; born in Monahans Texas November 6 1941

It always makes me smile, even shed a tear or two. Old Guy sure could write a song, that could be me or you!

Guy... was a great picker and had his own cadence/timing that made him so epic. He is wearing a cape now.

  15. A.... W....

Susanna wrote this, just an FYI

  16. s.... ....

Wrote a final verse in the memory of Guy’s passing. The greatest poet and purveyor of sonic prose that Texas ever birthed:

    Well he got good weather,
    He was light as feather,
as he jumped into the air.

    Flying high,
    Caressed the sky,
    As he climbed eternal stairs.

    Well they laid him down,
    Into the ground,
With that old flour sack cape.

    He passed the test,
    He flew the best,
So we laid that cape to rest.

    s.... ....

    This is so great

I'm watching this with tears in my eyes. So simple, sweet, and soulful. I had literally discovered Guy Clark like a month ago. If anything good comes from losing these wonderful musicians, it might be the younger generation learning about them all over again. <3

  56. T.... ....

I learnt a lot from you Guy, hope you had a life full of Love, Friends and Dreams that really came true.

  57. m.... ....

    RIP..Guy Clark. (Nov. 6, 1941 – May 17, 2016)
     Age 74.

  76. M.... ....

Tears at the loss of this great one. I haven''t seen this version before. I suspect it's fairly recent. Interesting that he wrote this song so many years ago (1975) and here he is singing it with every bit as much commitment to the truth, as if he'd written it with the life experience he had at the time of this performance.

I clicked on comments because I wanted to say exactly the same thing, but you way beat me to it. Yes, RIP Guy, and I hope wherever he is it's a kitchen table in a well-worn house and there's just folks sitting together singing.

  85. M.... T....

An American Americana original. RIP Guy Clark.

    @Ken Pollard
    Have a good one.
    I love traveling.
Done most of it in my converted schoolbus.
I like that better than having to sleep in different beds, eating in restaurants.
It's great to just pull over and cook dinner and chill out then get to sleep indoors in your own comfortable bed.
Then in the morning either check out the area and stay a while or move on down the road.
I often got work at stables or ranches and because I already had my home with me I never had to pay for a place to stay.
    Loved living on the road.
    I'm not afraid of adventure.

    Have a great journey.

I remember as a kid... the neighbor boys (and I just found out... my SISTER) would jump off of the garage. We were scared as heck for them, but I guess they "got it" WAY more that we did. Thanks, Guy! LOVE this!
I agree with ThreeChordGuitar. What the heck?

    S.... M....

+Susan Myers Well, we know the meaning of the song is deeper than that. Sorta like (in newer times) run Forest run when he couldn't figure things out and so just ran and ran and ran .... sometimes in life we need to just do this (and always trust our cape). When I was little, in Oklahoma, me and my brother found something in the woods that looked like a parachute. Strangely, he insisted I clime on the roof FIRST .. he said ... you'll glide down slowly .. I've seen this on the TV !! So, I jumped. Nearly broke by legs !! My brother is now deceased by about 6 years now. How I miss him so.

    S.... M....

Susan Myers Jumped off a few garages and barns myself!

I prefer listen to guys like Guy Clark, they tell a thousand page book in four minutes.
Just imagine the rest, that's enough for me.

    K.... S....

Yup - exactly - that's the "craft" of being a good story teller. The listener is directly involved in making the picture. It isn't a "recital" it's a dialogue.

  92. S.... S....

    Always trust your Cape.

  93. S.... M....

Oops - I made a mistake! I clicked on the 17 folks who did a thumbs down and became one! NOT my intention. Maybe 17 others made the same mistake? Guy Clarkis my main songwriting hero and I have the greatest respect for him and his lyricism. I have had the honour of meeting him twice (in the UK). Sadly the last time became over (2006) there were two front seats empty as I was busy having a heart operation!

  94. e.... ....

Guy Clark..dude,,,You been the best froever,,and you ain't lost shiut Man

  95. e.... ....

there are now sixteenn peopee whoo know squat.....who could even??
