Clapton, Eric - You Were There Lyrics

We made the distance,
Yeah, we made the day.
You made all the difference
'Cause you found the way.

Without your wisdom
Lord, where would we be
Lost in the wilderness,
Somewhere out at sea.

But you were there
Through the days of wine and madness,
When I'd always put you down.
You were there
Through my joys and my sadness
And you never let me down.

You found the meaning
And helped me to see
Where I was going to
All that I could be.

Without permission
You turned the key.
You climbed the prison wall
Deep inside of me.

You were there
Through the days of wine and madness
When I'd turn and put, put you down.
You were there
Through my joys and my sadness
And you never let me down.

You were there
Through the days of wine and madness
When I'd turn and put, put you down.
You were there
Through my joys and my sadness
And you never let me down.
Let me down.

You were there.
You were there.
You were there.

Eric Clapton wrote this song after finding out about Princess Diana’s death and it turned into a tribute to his long-time manager, Roger Forrester. “I had my daughter staying with me during the summer and I went around to the news agents on the Sunday morning and it was on the front page that Princess Diana was dead. All this stuff started coming up like it did for everybody. For me, it was like a compilation of feelings that go back to every loss that I’ve ever experienced. And I had this feeling ... and I didn’t want it to get pinned onto this event. I wanted to actually place it somewhere where I felt it really belonged. And so I took it to a relationship that I have been involved with, myself, for the last 25 years, which is with my manager. And I took this feeling and put it in this song for him.” (From the March 1998 Rock Daily on-line interview)

Lyrics of the 13th track of the album Pilgrim:

    [Verse 1]
    We made the distance
    Yeah, we made the day
    You made all the difference
    Cause you found the way
    Without your wisdom
    Lord, where would we be
    Lost in the wilderness
    Somewhere out at sea

    [Chorus]
    But you were there
Through the days of wine and madness
When I'd always put you down
    You were there
Through my joys and my sadness
And you never let me down

    [Verse 2]
    You found the meaning
    And helped me to see
    Where I was going to
    All that I could be
    Without permission
    You turned the key
    You climbed the prison wall
    Deep inside of me

    [Chorus][x2]
    But you were there
Through the days of wine and madness
When I'd always put you down
    You were there
Through my joys and my sadness
And you never let me down

    [Outro][x3]
    You were there

ERIC DOES NOT DISAPPOINT EVEN WHEN GOING SOLO - HE HAS GOT THE MAGIC TOUCH AND DOES NOT NEED TO OVERDO WITH HIS UNIVERSALLY ACKNOLEDGED SKILLNESS AT PLAYING GUITAR: NO NEED TO SHOW IT OUT: DESPITE WHAT MANY ENVIOUS MAGAZINE CRITICS SAY HE HIS A GREAT COMPOSER AS WELL
