Church, The - North, South, East And West Lyrics
A war's being waged and the world's just a stage (in this city)
The real estate's prime, the number plates rhyme (liquidity)
Wear a gun and be proud, but bare breasts aren't allowed (in this city)
Dream up a scam and then rake in the clams (liquidity)
North and south and east and west
(It has to be somewhere) It oughta be somewhere
North and south and east and west
I take my payment, I catch my flight
And don't wait up for me tonight
(And you might find me there) and you might find me there
North and south and east and west
Have a quick throw or host your own show (in this city)
The face of today just a scalpel away
Restore your lost soul for two dollars plus toll (liquidity)
Backs are patted when calves are fatted (in this city)
The emperor's clothes are the best for the proles (liquidity)
The guys with the brains are all bitter and vain (stupidity)
The guys with the luck got the bimbos and bucks (liquidity)
North, south, east, west

Love the frickin' Church. Like the younger years best. I am as old as MWP, a Cancer, don't like change. Don't really care w/o MWP. He was the HERO of guitar and very hot. Kids, old age sucks.
One of my all time favorite albums.
This is a great album, everyone should have it

Nothing changes
11 people don't have any taste in music at all
Had this tape when in the Army, would listen on my Walkman (way back) at night while in the field, clear night w/stars, music really fit w/the wide open view of space.
Awesome song. The guitars just rip! Actually one of my favourite all time albums.
Hahahaha after all the water that has passed under and still here we are..........................
This song is about getting f'd up.. omg I'm not sure how I never heard it before .. but rest assured.. it 'tis
I forgot how truly amazing this album is...a masterpiece. Lost, North-South, Under the Milky Way, the damn thing is GREAT! I listened to this 1000s of times but lost it for a decade. Beautiful.
I still have the starfish cassette I bought when I was 14. I am 43 now. That mother fucking tape plays beautifully- well it has become complicated this last year to track down a working tape player- tape forever sounds better than on this devil box.
NOW THIS IS MY KIND OF CHURCH !!!!! THE ONLY KIND
you are nice ms bee
And mine
If I could only listen to one band for the rest of my life, these guys would be it.
Dee Hughes Haha...better late than never. Fucking brilliant band.
Was it the "tour" they did earlier this year with The Psychedelic Furs?? ( another much BELOVED band of mine along with The Church....) If that's the case then you got a double shot of BRILLIANCE!!!.... I've also been a fan of The Church for over three DECADES ( pretty much since I was 13 years old ) I remember that 1988 tour really fucking WELL because they were also touring with MY GOD= Peter Murphy and just like you ( and that's what prompted me to reply... ) couldn't "get off work" to go to the ONE NIGHT ONLY show both bands were playing in my area.... My fucking boss wouldn't give me the night off and since I was kinda the "new kid on the job" I didn't wanna get "fired"!!! ( yeah, I thought about having the MOTHERFUCKER MURDERED!!!... Lol!!!... )
@Peter Murphy In Bed With Iggy Pop In A NYC Hotel Room In 1980 I got to see P M a few years ago when he did all Bauhaus tunes...was a great show. That mother has held up well. I got a drumstick too, lol.
Too bad Peter has aged so fucking MISERABLY!!!...
Peter Murphy In Bed With Iggy Pop In A NYC Hotel Room In 1980 He looked fine when I saw him.
If The Church had one iconic song that best summed them up, this would be it for me. Great fusion of Steve Kilbey's effortless drawl and the superb jangly guitar all set against their trademark ethereal vibe. Great song. Great album.
great music, great verses.
This accompanied me into Iraq in 1991 on cassette. MSR patrols wouldn't have been the same without The Church blasting out of the boombox in my HMMV. This song in particular always hit my soft spot....my favorite one from them, right in front of Reptile.
Thank you for your service!
It was my duty and also my honor to do so. NSEW still gives me goose bumps 25 years later.
Thank you for your service.
OhHaiNSA I'm sorry you were forced to go into a pointless war that only made some assholes wealthier while being disguised as "the right thing to do". Good you made it back.
Thank you bro. Appreciated. You have some great taste

Pumped for HOB on 3/6!
about to see them in two days yaaaaa !!!
Ya know, I still enjoy their music 30 years later. Funnily enough I'm still turning people my own age onto their music. I mean really? How the hell do you not know who the Church are?
@wes mantooth I agree, how can those who love great music not know about The Church? I mean..... they are
an amazingly valid band. Keep listening!
I think that a lot of people are just hypnotized by mainstream media. It is a common problem.
Keep spreading the music!
Awesome album...still an amazing listen. The Guys are still one of my all time favorite groups, and they have an deep catalog of great material.
I think Starfish should go down as one of the greats of the 80s, if not of all time. It's an album that I can listen to over and over, from start to finish, and have since I first bought it on tape back in 1988. Glad to know that I am not alone in this opinion!
This is one of the best records ever recorded. I could literally listen to these guys interplay on guitar all fucking day long. So much from such great economy.
Completely agree, it just fucking rocks. Must have listened to this song more than any other but the opening guitars still give me goosebumps.
toute ma jeunesse!
Consider yourself lucky.
What? You didn't hear the banjo? Better listen again.
Needs more banjo
Love the guitar in this, great song!!!
How many copies of this album did we do in tapes? I can't remember
Such a great album..classic !!!!!!
I love that ambient main riff! Someone make a freaking time machine!
Wear a gun and be proud but bare breasts aren´t allowed ... (in this city) ...
---- Awful truth ---
As a Dj in the 80's,I had played these song for years at the end of the parties as an hymn to go home!Unfortunately the clubbers kept on listening these song very loud on the carpark and the neighbourhood always called the Police! ahaha! such very fun & delicious moments!;-)
If you want i invite you on "WAVEof80"

perfectly put.......wonderful writing, i enjoyed reading it, thank you!
I had to check your username to make sure I didn't leave that comment. It's nice to know that someone else has experienced The Church, especially this song, the way I have.
there's a gun in the crowd but bare breasts aren't allowed
This is a great album!
never ever gets old...the church , one of the ll time great bands, always
godamn it, the church absolutely rocks-the textures, lyrics and all around evocation of emotion...these guys are truly timeless....what a gift to hear this tune again, thanks so much man!
As everyone has said, the most underrated band perhaps of all time. And they are still putting out incredible CD after incredible CD as strong as they've ever been. Saw them on the tour for Untitled #23 and it was first time I saw them in quite a while. You can see what bands can do that have been together so long, they put on tight, flawless, awesome concerts. If you haven't seen them live, do yourself a favor and go, you won't be disappointed.
WHOLE ALBUM SIMPLY EPIC
WHOLE ALBUM SIMPLY EPIT
@skyvastmind nicely put
This is such a beautiful song.
there's a gun in the crowd but there breast are'nt allowed.
God, I sooo love this song! Especially now that I found out it was composed in my home state of Texas. ;)
Why the hell did this come up when i opened firefox
One of the best albums of the 80s, every song is great.
Got this on vinyl at a record convention like 20 yrs ago, after falling in love with it from the rock radio station's playing of "Under the Milky Way. " Still have it, still holds up. (Always thought of Steve Kilbey as a better sounding Bono).
is dave mccomb singing on this?
@tni2010 Kilbey is a wizard in the studio
@91nickt Yes it does
@Malocosa it has to be somewhere North and south EAST and WESt

I love the guitars in this song. Is this song really about the city of Los Angeles?
These lyrics still hold up today
