Church, The - Myrrh Lyrics

Emerald haunt in overdrive
Nightmare descent into Jericho city
Camel dust heralds our arrival
New Christ beneath the drumkit moon
Oh Lord we are threatened again
In the slipstream pull of the federal men
Plummeted in some seamless night
Down here to earth it's hopeless then

Apache gunman in the boiling crowd
Who never got to meet you last time
We're interrupted by the telephone
You didn't think they were invented then
Oh Lord we need miracles
We need more wine and gold
We need slaves and roads and personal favors
We need microphones and manifolds

How can you be so invisible
Give me the nerves to see
Privilege on privilege
An unwanted discovery

So now we're cruising down this shuddering highway
With a dead sun shining on my back
And we talk about the way people treat us back there
Their hollow laughter, the pain in their eyes
Oh my Lord I trust your intentions
But money strangles our love
Struggling like a fool with my junk and my jewels
You would have thought I'd had enough

  14. J.... A....

    Bellisimo Andante

  15. D.... M....

Perfect use of reverb. This song reminds me of someone I once loved the same year that it came out, and I knew it would take a miracle to keep us together. That miracle never happened, and it was a true love lost and I never loved again.

  16. T.... W....

Great song , a haircut year to forget

  17. P.... G....

Going to university in Waterloo (Ontario), I made the long walk home in the winter every day to this song on my Walkman. A distant communication tower bleakly flashed at me in acknowledgement. No, no drugs involved, just a lot of spirit.

Oh! Also! Listen to the last 2 minutes of Porcupine Tree's 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here' for Myrhh-inspired music.

  18. M.... O....

The Church, May 1st, 2019, Meow Wolf, Santa Fe NM!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. R.... B....

First time I listened to this song I was in a parking lot after a surf session. My friend played it while we were talking.

  20. D.... ....

A few years ago, when The Church was playing in Hollywood (don’t remember the venue name)Steve tweeted what did his fans want to hear them play and being this is my favorite The Church song I tweeted him how much this song needed to be heard live by me! And a few days later at the show which I made my way front row- right before intermission this song started! And I was dancing and singing so loudly! I was telling Steve thank you soo much I know he saw me I was front row! This song sounded exactly like it does on the album! I tweeted him the next day again and he replied! I cried! Best memory. #LongLiveTheChurch

    D.... ....

    I want your life

  21. R.... B....

Great band of the 80s not populary in my country, PERU, however many people enjoy their music

  22. M.... S....

Saw this fantastic inspiring band twice at The town and country club in 86 and 88 in London. Been hooked to their music since then. Its like being in another world when ever i listen and drift straight back to the eighties when i was twenty something enjoying their great music, such as my favorite album heyday

    M.... S....

I was at the '86 Town and Country gig, loud and fast!

Has anyone posted the full Australian release of this album, containing Marty and Peter's contributions, including the additional instrumental songs. I think they are "As You Will", "The View" and Trance Endings. I used to have the CD, but I think an ex-friend or lover borrowed it and never gave it back eons ago, and now that version of the album is extremely rare to find at least in the US and Europe, and I haven't seen it posted anywhere.

    A.... A....

Hello, maybe this helps - I think you can download the songs from Amazon. I did this with "As You Will" recently (in Germany, though) and if I remember correctly, all songs from "Heyday" were available. 😊

  26. D.... B....

The Atheist Experience brought me here

  27. D.... E....

Nice track opening heyday.percussive effects cool.multi 24 track recording.

  28. L.... J....

    T.... F....

    I hear that...

  34. F.... ....

Great album...set the band up musically for their most commercial success LP "Starfish"... whole album is simply a gem.

  35. T.... S....

    The Intro is just breathtaking

    T.... S....

Yes, the keyboard/synth notes seem hybridized to a guitar-like down . . . gives mysterious ambience.

    T.... S....

That lil snare skip is pretty amazing

  39. P.... C....

The best intro to a song ever.

    P.... C....

House of Love must've listened to this

  40. P.... F....

Gigantic song all the way... But Richard Ploog's drumming is just the best in pop rock history... in my humble opinion!

    P.... F....

I can't over-emphasize just how much I miss Ploog's playing in the band's music, ever since he left the band.

    P.... F....

maybe a bit of hyperbole there, but great drumming nonetheless! ;-)

  41. M.... ....

I still have this record; love this album...takes me back.

  42. E.... B....

    Sublime

  43. t.... l....

    the best !

  44. S.... H....

im a huge death & black metal fan..but I love this band!! im glad they never went the rout of the corporate crap the world is flooded with!!

  45. A.... P....

Everybody and everything matters. It is all being sustained in existence even in this very instant . . . by His infinite love.

  46. M.... C....

OMG I had forgotten how good this song was!!

    M.... C....

    Mariateresa Costanzo Byrne

Yes, you're right, it is becoming a favorite, and Ive listened to a lot of their other really good songs.

  47. T.... N....

The church is probably one of the most under rated bands ever. Great atmospheric music and interesting lyrics. Happy Hunting Grounds is one of my favorite songs ever. When ever I want to get into a flow I pop in Church CD's or files and just let it go..

  48. r.... ....

Any band w/a guitar player named Marty Wilson Piper has got 2 B the shit! "Heyday" is a 80's era & Church classic with melodic riffs, clever lyrics, & revealing intentions. By far, the best of any Church music; ever! Thanx Ladz...

  49. T.... ....

I remember living in Drummond Street North Carlton 1986, in a share -house of 6, a classic run down terrace from the 1890s.. I came home with this album, tore off the plastic wrapping. I listened in hope and this song started it off and gave me the suitable (and barely just) psychedelic lift. Within three tracks, I knew what I had expected to be unfortunately true. The Church were over, and would never be relevant to my generation again - rather I, as I tripped with it, would never be relevant again. A couple of years later - actually 18 months - which may well have been 18 years for a student, 'Under the Milky Way' came out, and of course it was beautiful, but war was long over.

  50. M.... A....

Curto demais este som! Australian music sempre!! surf, surf and surf...

  51. G.... R....

My lord, their drummer is amazing.

    G.... R....

    Mr. Richard Ploog!!!!!!!! :)

    G.... R....

As a huge Church fan I was getting ready to crap all over you but then I realized that you're right. I love the drumming in this song but it really is the least amazing part of it. The song is so good that one of my favorite drum performances is overshadowed by the other artists. Ridiculous efforts all around.

    G.... R....

@AlexForSale drum lines are more than whether they are hard to play or not...e.g. The Beatles-Ringo...this is a very creative line that is very much in the pocket and really fits the song. It is also well recorded...

  52. c.... ....

I think this is my fav Church song. I love it. Love it, love it, love it. I've been listening to the Church for 30 years, Heyday is my all time favourite.

    c.... ....

Hey... I just wrote the message below on another comment and I hope you don't mind me asking you too... I need some eighties guidance!

I absolutely love this song! I was born in 1978 so I missed the eighties and the only exposure to that decade was mainstream media and I got the impression it was the worst decade for music, fashion, and anything else you cared to mention... How wrong could they be! I'm 37 now and the last couple of years have been some of the most exciting when it comes to discovering new music... The eighties were AMAZING! I don't get much time to delve into the more obscure and lesser known bands, so I hope you don't mind me asking if you have any favourite bands/artists you think would be worth looking into? I'd really appreciate it if you could!

    c.... ....

@ Lee: Before and after I discovered The Church in 1988 (I was 17), I was listening to bands such as The Cure, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Cult, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Robyn Hitchcock, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, The Clash, English Beat, Jesus and Mary Chain, and the list goes on. For less alternative yet masterful guitar playing, etc. try Richard Thompson and maybe a band like Rush. Marty Willson-Piper, by the way, loves Richard Thompson--I had the awesome opportunity to talk to Marty about him on two separate occasions.

    c.... ....

You get an A+ for the stuff you were listening to.

    c.... ....

@Rustodian Try the first two All About Eve albums. I still love them so much.

  53. P.... C....

    J.... W....

    Rustodian Chameleons UK were amazing

    J.... W....

Chameleons were amazing. Under The Bridge great album

  59. B.... H....

The Church is the best ever!!!!!!!!!!!! loved them since I first heard Unguarded Moment

  60. N.... ....

Thought this would interest everybody.  Recently came across a sci-fi/ fantasy novel that is based on this Church tune, called (oddly enough) MYRRH.  It's extremely weird and off the wall, and can be found on Amazon or Barnes & Noble if you punch in the book name and the author, K. Griffiths.  Not the easiest thing to read (but then how straightforward are Church lyrics?  So I guess that's appropriate).  Great tune in the meantime, thanks for the upload.

  61. T.... R....

'Camel dust heralds our arrival' brilliant, love how the guitars soar, bliss.

  62. E.... V....

Heard this during the opening of an episode of "The Atheist Experience." Thought it sounded good, so I wanted to give the whole song a listen.
    Good stuff.

    E.... V....

    @Funk Iou No, it isn't.

  64. H.... M....

After a long time I had a CHURCH day today and yessss I still like them a lot since more than 20 years

  65. O.... E....

Tunes like this change a teen. Changed me.

    O.... E....

    Changed me at 30.

    O.... E....

So true. Changed me at 11 in 1986.

    O.... E....

Myrrh takes me back like no other tune. Do you have any others in this category. It’s hard to remember for me. Myrrh hit me hard in the gut and it was all mine. Nobody I knew was affected by this song like I was.

    O.... E....

Had a huge huge impact on me when I was about 18. This album really changed my life

  66. K.... M....

not enough bands use the "E-Bow anymore.....great band, great song, great memories

    K.... M....

    Bill Nelson :-)

  67. j.... ....

This is one of those songs that felt instantly familiar the very first time I heard it. Absolutely brilliant and still my favourite Church track today.

  68. b.... ....

Well put. I luv the moods they inspire.

  69. b.... ....

True, but not under-rated down here in Australia and New Zealand. We love them. I can chart my adolescence by this band. So many memories. So many moods inspired.

  70. S.... L....

This band never gets enough credit. Master song writers and musicians. It is rare when a band can write not only a good song but also inspire a mood.

  71. F.... ....

A great band and a unbelievably well written song. Top on my list.

  72. 2.... ....

i totally agree,i noticed that earlier uploads were taken down...all those votes lost forever...doesn't take away how under-rated and great this song is...drenched in reverb, set's the moodiness of it...and those lyrics!

  73. M.... ....

    Good man

  74. G.... ....

Well, to be fair, I'll own up to liking some of that "trash music" and I can call it what it is. But you're right, there's no sense in starting one of those stupid "my music is better!" youtube fights.

  75. M.... ....

I agree but let's not go down that path calling other people's preferred type of music "trash"

  76. G.... ....

The Church is criminally underrated. People would rather listen to trash music.

    G.... ....

Australian band is automatically on the back foot internationally then and even though less now no easy task.
Remember the biggest record producer in America said INXS KICK was a crap album.
And went on to be one of the biggest Albums of that decade.

  77. S.... F....

What a shame not more views sickening
