Church, The - Hotel Womb Lyrics

Volcano pierce the air, ashes block out the sun
Down in the lair, well I met her there
With a price for everyone
I paid eighty dollars for this wedding ring
I couldn't take it off if I tried
And the cactus sure tastes strangely sweet
As it goes down inside

I'll dream I'm safe in my hotel womb
Soft and soul made, it's a wonderful room

A sudden voltage in the night, with a rainforest girl
As we float downstream to the Amazon River
Where the black waters swirl
I say, why are you people wearing those masks?
I say, can we be reconciled?
She says the mother of the storm has to roam the sky
Searching for her child

I'll dream I'm safe in my hotel womb
Soft and soul made, it's a wonderful room
I wish I'm back in my hotel womb
Slip through the crack, to that wonderful room

Morning comes at last, and she's lying by my side
She's got the face of the widow that keeps following me
And the body of my bride
I say, why are those buildings swaying like trees?
I say, can we stop for a while?
She says, can't you hear the city that's hidden in there?
It's just another mile

Church, The Hotel Womb Comments

American critics have described Steve Kilbey's lyrics as esoteric and "off the wall." They're not listening close enough. He is brilliant.

  2. L.... A....

    This song is hypnotizing.

  3. a.... a....

Steve.s voice reminds me Lloyd Cole,s voice...

  4. T.... M....

Sultry content which I recommend. 🖕

  5. T.... M....

Soft and so laid... too bad their singing on heroin.

You've gotta be a complete dipshit to thumbs down anything off Starfish

This song is quite obviously about hanging out with groupies and having kinky experiences while on the road. I always thought it was a lysergic love song about one person. No, there are three women in the song, while others are alluded to including a wife who is not there, twice. In the first verse the girl wants him to take off his wedding ring, but he can't, or won't. In the second verse the "rainforest" (wet, turned on) girl seems to be trying to entice him into... something... There are people with masks. He seems to demure and ask her if they can do something else and she mentions the "daughter of the storm searching for her child." Is she trying to trap him by getting pregnant?
In the last verse he seems to be with this woman because she's terribly sexy and reminds him of both his wife and "the widow who keeps following me" His mother? They're having sex and he asks if they "can stop for a while." She says "can you see the city that's hidden in there. " Basically "I'm about to come. Keep going."
In the chorus he talks about "slipping through the cracks" I don't know. The song is either about nothing or something very specific. He makes no secret about being inspired by Bob Dylan, even using similar enunciation. It isn't a stretch that he would use similar imagery in his lyrics. Great song. A very interesting one too.

I remember these guys had a residency at the the old Mosman hotel, I think it was a Sunday night. Barely ten turned up. Everyone was broke, there was so many good gigs happening. I loved them, real musicians who interacted so fucking brilliantly. Mind you they had to compete with the likes of The Sunnyboys, Hoodoo Gurus and INXS. A $100
wage only went so far. If you had a win along the way you could gig every night except Mondays, nobody did them. True to the old testament, rock bands. lol.

This song figures prominently through my last jaunt coast to coast in 2013. It had always been a favorite of mine, but up until the beginning of said trip, I had been going through some things I won't go into. I was off of hwy. 64, NE New Mexico, sleeping in the bed of my truck, listening to music on my phone, shuffle gods landed on this song, I immersed myself, took in the twilight landscape, thoughts of a lady friend so far away, and, the song sounded different. It's difficult to explain, but to this day I hear it differently. That's the connection I have with it now.

    Jingle Jangle
Saw the Church 3 weeks ago at the Triffid Brisbane. I swear they get better with age. True artists. Astounds me how a band which is so loved worldwide, doesn't get more respect in Australia.
They have been such a huge part of my life.

  17. J.... F....

    For deaf ears.

  18. S.... D....

Interesting lyrics and story, even better tune. Love those jangling guitars!

  19. I.... B....

    Interstellaire

  20. T.... N....

Probably one of the most under rated bands ever. The Blurred Crusade, Heyday and Starfish are all albums you need to own and listen to.

    Tim Novak After Everything.

  22. L.... A....

    Vastly underrated band.

  23. E.... d....

Another one of their absolute best songs and they have an incredibly deep catalog of great songs beyond those few known by most.

    E.... d....

    I truly agree

    i fuckin love this song
i've seen these guys with the new-wave post punk goth-rock phase & then i went straight for the 60's folk kinda stuff after the 70's soft rock stuff but these guys really stick onto me, they're something different for the 80's, they've got an old school sound and this 'cliche' best album really does show their best stuff with antenna and several other songs

  26. D.... B....

wow , I love the Church but i thought they only had 6 good songs . They are up there with the best

  27. g.... ....

This song is about heroin. Steve Kilbey was a junkie at the time.

    g.... ....

+gortleib Song is actually about Steve's experience in Los Angeles recording Starfish. He claimed in an interview, he wasn't fond of the climate, so far removed from Australia. Starfish has a few about LA, but he's stated in many interviews about the recording, his hotel was a "safe haven" from the "strange" atmosphere. Brilliant lyrics.:)

    g.... ....

Wrong. The song is not about heroin it is about San Pedro Cactus which is an hallucinogen used primarily by South American shaman thus the references to the cactus sliding down the throat & the Amazon. San Pedro is very popular in Australia & is all over Southern California where I live. I have taken it a number of times...

    g.... ....

I grew up in So Cal, and this is the first I've heard of the Cactus (but it could have been around and I was ignorant to it's existence), but I think it's awesome it shares the same name as the LA town I was raised in.

    g.... ....

Oh yea!  And what do we have in the south (US)?  The sugar bag, the grain and the time...

    g.... ....

Steve didn't start heroin until 1990..

  28. M.... ....

Such an endearing song. A wonderful musical arrangement. I remember playing along to this in The House of Compassion at 2am with god knows what drugs i had in my system at the time. Fabulous memories from a fantastic time to be well and truly alive.

    M.... ....

  52. G.... R....

I remember laying on the couch listening to this song in the wee hours of the morning during 1989 when I realized my first marriage was falling apart. Hearing this song I can remember the aprtment. I still have the cassette, but no cassette player.

  53. p.... ....

fantastyczny kawałek stare dobre czasy i dzwięki
    Pozdrowienia!!!!!!!!

  54. b.... ....

This song touches me in ways that are hard to describe. In my own life it makes me feel like something has ended... a life, a romantic interest... a dream. The moment you realize it's gone and you have to move on. All you want to do is go back to the beginning and it will all be alright again. Life hurts and love heals... sometimes it's the other way around.

  55. C.... ....

one of my favourite album of all time...and of course one of my favourite band too. Just magic!

  56. e.... ....
