Church, The - Almost With You Lyrics
See the chains which bind the men
Can you taste their lonely arrogance
It's always too late
And your face is so cold
They struggled for this opulence
Burnt away so long before our time
Now their warmth is forgotten and gone
Pretty maids not far behind
Who you trying to get in touch with
I'm almost with you
I can sense it wait for me
I'm almost with you
Is this the taste of victory
See the dust which fills your sleep
Does it always feel this chill near the end
I never dreamed we'd meet here once more
This life reserved for a friend

This song always reminds me when I was on the road.... ?..
Fantastic song.
awesome song XD
Wow...brings back so many memories of the early 80's.....
Why they didn't really make it is a mystery, they were awesome. EDIT: I saw this as part of a set in the day, I loved it. Still a favourite.
💙takes me back to growing up life was simple🙏
What the heck happened? Things are so twisted and complicated these days...
One of the most underrated bands of all time. One of their greatest songs. As someone else said - so sad, so triumphant, so timeless.
i go running and hear this in my head....why? I guess it's so good
Wow! Why had I never heard of this band?!
Awesome song, classic!
He cant sing
i just read the lyrics outright, and love them
love this song so much it kills me
love this song so much it kills me
Fantastic song from a great band. I’ve always been fascinated with the art work of this track (as per above)and where it was derived from. Any info would be appreciated.
i go running and hear this in my head....why? I guess it's so good
Saw them in Australia in 1985 - brilliant band and album - Thanks! And the acoustic guitar is brill - fair dinkum mate
Pure craftsmanship
Why the hell did this get removed from spotify???
I never find myself in a mood where I don't want to listen to this song. It can be wistful, soothing, sweetly sad, triumphant, etc.. The video is pretty funny though.
back in the 80's when i was a teen they they played at our high school social in Port Macquarie . been a fan ever since
C👀l mate. AC/DC did Highsc👀ls also....no one ever believes me only people who grew up with me in my city.
Who ever is on the flamingo guitar is awesome
I heard this live at MOOMBA decades ago; they were playing to a small crowd and bypassers and I was lucky enough to be one.
Just fucking timeless.
Fantastic
.......when I was a senior in HS a buddy & I cut a drove the 90 miles from Philly to NYC to “Bleeker Street Bob’s” a RECORD STORE wherein the cut-out bin I found a couple of eps, one of them being “Sing-Songs” from The Church; that was back in 1982.....can’t remember the other records I picked up, but still listening to The Church....and it’s been a helluva ride....ups and downs from the different albums, but never boring....Thx guys for 30+ yrs of some quality work......
I saw them in a little dive in Hoboken, NJ in 1981. They opened for the The Bongos. Was hooked right away. Great guitar work.
👌👌👌👌
An amazing band.
Wow! Why had I never heard of this band?!
As far as middle eights go - this is the second best I've heard - just behind that for Under the Milky Way.
I prefer this over Milky Way, but I do like Milky Way more than my dad does though. He tuned out of the band after that album came out. Just replayed blurred crusade and of skin of hearts albums for the next 30+ years and continuing.
How fucking good is this? Takes me right back!
Who remembers the Jump Club in Collingwood...Church, Divynals, Sunnyboys, Mentals &
Hunners etc.... Church were brill.
Love this period of their music.
me too... I only own this and 'Starfish'. I'm wary of anything else by them...
They did a lot more acid back then. True story, this is where these songs came from, really really good acid trips. Take some and listen, you'll understand.
Am I the only one who thinks this band is the Aussie version of The Cure?
This band is 10x better than The Cure.
aboutthetruthmedia organization I always saw them as a more light hearted version of the damned.
Yeah definitely The Damned much more so than the Cure. And thanks for reminding me about them, they were the shit! Going there now.
@eric strada Sorry, nothing is better than The Cure
That jingly jangly guitar sound is more reminiscent of early REM . Who emerged around the same time (80/81)
i love you amy so much, love from john
I used to sing "This is the taste of Victory" and loved how all the words solidified that last word. And then I learnt the lyrics said "Is this". Each to their own. Still doesn't change how brilliant this song is.
i'm from newcastle nsw australia
Hat,s off to you sir
might have to hook up the old vcr just to watch my Goldfish Jokes Magic Souvenirs vid ... wish I could get it on DVD without paying a freaking fortune
Guy From Newastle goodonyachamp
seen them at a day on the green bloody awesome sounds like you where listening to a cd puts bands now days to shame
SONIC, beautiful electric guitar sound, layered tracks, acoustic guitar solo, love it!
I remember searching for these and other bands when doing my trade school in Sydney but they used different names so much back then doing shows at a uni or pub only to hear someone got lucky a caught a band somewhere
Thank you .
First heard this song in 1984, when I was 23, cripes am I that old !!!!
Patrick Williams c
I was 24. Know exactly how you feel.
I was 16.
BEST POP SONG OF ALL TIMES
love this song so much it kills me
YO.....just czeching as you posted here over 3 years ago and I wanted to see if you’re still alive...
2:38 for the magical bit
Yes - the Church - Aussie band - under-rated Big Time - this track was enormous then and still stands up today - not bad after +30 years - thats the test of any music......95% of the music from the same period we dont even play anymore - cause its junk....but this is right up and out there....and will survive for another 30 years.....
Not really. There is a shitload of great music from this period that is still great. Today's music isn't even worth mentioning it's so f'g bad.
I remember this live from MOOMBA back in the day, They were playing to about 50 people and I was rapt.
@eric strada When this was released people from the older generations were saying exactly what you have said . The reality is they had calcified .
"Great music has lived lives and will live "
What crap , if you couldn't appreciate more bands around at the same time in Aus. ,your one sick puppy , the list goes on and on and on and and on some more !
eric strada - Yeah, dunno where some get their figures from. Everyone’s a YT Expert I suppose.👍
fuck yeah this band rocks an always fucking will
Always a buzz revisiting
Gloriously beautiful song. It's breathtaking.
ilove this song..=).
Here we go again Nic Ward was the Drummer on this track as well, not Richard
dont think so
This song really sounds a bit like Paul Kelly to me
No way. Steve Kilbey, pure essence
But better
is this the taste of victory?
the picture of the old seafarer telling his story to the small boys fits perfectly better than that stupid video of the knight in armour
Awesome song, classic!
One of my favorite bands from the 80s, LOVE this song..
That acoustic solo is just mind-blowing.
One of the most beautiful guitar solos ever!
Fuc* yeah... stunning!
Every time I hear Marty is not in the band. My stomach turns.
Yep, reminds me of a similar acoustic solo and arrangement in Steve Harley and Cockney Rebels, “Come up and See me” from 1975.
The cover picture was used by Talk Talk on the sleeve for such a shame in 1984,
Awesome
How good are The Church. I 'm almost with you can you wait for me
I will wait for you
From a truly vast brilliant body of work, this track still stands supreme as one of my personal favourites!
And The Blurred Crusade was the best album - a mon avis!
After many years of music listening, this band remain one of the greatest - saw them in Leeds 1989
great great music!
one of the greatest groups ..... and i'm not even aussie.
i just read the lyrics outright, and love them
true music, listen to the tune and lyrics to appreciate
Fabulous song, fabulous album, fabulous band
Fabulous song, fabulous album, fabulous band
Brilliant choice for Who do you think you are.
Love this song so much. And this is the best recording of it on the internet - the right pitch and tempo. So why is it so hard to find when you search for it? You'd have more views if it was easier.
Perfecta!!!
