Church, Eric - Lightning Lyrics
These four walls of Farnworth
Are closin' in on me
My final meal's over
They're gonna set me free
I can feel the fire's a burnin'
I hit my knees in search of Jesus
On a cold jailhouse floor
[Chorus:]
Lord, now I'm singin':
"Get me out of here"
I see the preacher's eyes
As my daughter cries
When they strap me in this chair
Lord, I hope she forgives me
Tonight I ride the lightning
To my final judgment day
Every life owes a death
That's what the Bible says
I owe mine to this state
For shootin' that boy to death
A liquor store attendant
He was reachin' for his gun
Now his Momma sits there smilin'
As the boss yells "Roll on one
Now I'm singin'
"Get me out of here"
I see the preacher's eyes
As my daughter cries
And they strap me in this chair
I hope she forgives me
For leavin' her this way
Tonight I ride the lightning
To my final restin' place
A hungry blue eyed baby cryin'
Made me rob that store
An' as that boy lay there dyin'
I dropped my pistol on the floor
Yeah, I'd take it all back but there's nothin' I can do
They've covered my face
An' the order's gone through
As the boss yells "Roll on, two"
Now I'm flyin'
Up an' out of here
I close my eyes an' slowly rise
Let my body leave this chair
Lord I hope you forgive me
For livin' my life this way
Yeah, tonight I ride the lightning
To my final restin' place
These four walls of Farnworth
Are closin' in on me

Church, Eric Lightning Comments
So very powerful!!! Sadly there are so many real stories just like this. If we could make this country fare and stop the greedy there'd be no need for it.
One of my all-time favorite it's such an amazing song. I cry every time.
Always give me chills
While Eric Church is talented, he's the biggest titty-baby out there. He whines about Garth Brooks winning EOTY when Garth is not in control over the decision making process. Garth is not only a better performer, he's also a better person. One year he won some award, I think it was EOTY and he denied saying he didn't feel he deserved it.
awesome mr church
Gives me chills everytime
Eric Church is the GOAT. And by that, I mean there is one GOAT, and it's Eric Church
Wow
What a powerful song
My step brother was killed in Tulsa Oklahoma last week. A 23 year old bouncer hit him outside the bar for no reason. My brother feel hit his head and was taken to the hospital. He was declared brain dead and my mom had to pull the plug. I couldnt beleave it and i cried for two people that night because two lifes were lost that night. He was booked in on manslater and will most likely spend a lot of time in prison. I truly dont feel he ment to kill him. But i know he shouldnt have hit my brother for no reason. The girl that was with the bouncer that night turned him in because he was in the wrong and the video shows he was in the wrong. My brother was just being him joking with friends and the bouncer came up and hit him. One dumb choice cost him his life in it really is sad that two great people died that night.
what a moving and powerful song!!!
Anyone else reminded of the green mile
Still 1 of my favorites of Eric Church!!
I just heard this song for the first time. How the $!@# isnt this his most popular song. I like springsteen as much as the next guy but this and knives of new orleans need more love!!!
When he says "Ride the Lightning" this is what I think of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk6wLZN4X74&list=LL6ID162DjkW2IaHcrUXDHeQ&index=51
Do people even how lucky people that are that know when the end is here last minute ask for forgiveness those people are truly blessed
One of the most powering songs ever love you and your guys music and you are one the greatest out there period ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Without a doubt, my favorite song of Eric’s, however, I love every song he writes and sings. The man is a true genius. And I am a songwriter, under my maiden name.
Eric Church is one of the last good story tellers in country music
I have no clue why i never listened to this whole album but im glad i finally did. Powerful song and video
Amazing story telling.. you really feel like you knew that man and his decision and the self hatred he feels for the lives he ruined..
every life owes a debt
can't count how many times I've listened to this beautiful piece
Literally I always come back to listen to this song! Hands down probably my favorite song of all time.
I'm thankful my dad didn't just do any wrong only got in trouble 31 yrs ago and when I got meet him all over again at 14 yrs old and from 14 yrs old to now of going on 32 yrs old I forgave every thing he did and love my father the way he is and the way he cleaning his self up over the yrs and man he is now .
I left a 11 yr marriage do to personnel situation and raising 3 little boys .
love that livingroom/kicthencombo
Luke Combs has called this the greatest Eric Church song of all time
Another outlaw gone to heaven,we all pay in the end.
This song is deep.
This is the true definition of country music
How does this not have more views?
Damn that was awesome, I can't believe I had never heard this one until now!
I'm so excited to go on the double down tour again soon. Went to St.Louis and I'm crazy about him! This is one of my favorite songs. Btw I'm only 13
Jessica Gehrt I’m only 15 and I’ve been to now 5 of his shows and I can’t wait for future ones! Gotta respect the younger people like us for realizing actual art instead of the bullshit that others listen to these days. (I’m also from kc so hows it going across the state?)
@Ashton Olson it's good in Chicago right now. I'm going to the 2nd night of double down tonight and last night was amazing. I almost could reach him as he got down from the stage and went close to my row. Eric Church definetly respects his fans
What a an epic song/story
Could imagine actually being walked to a chair where they're going to kill you...crazy thought when you try to put yourself in that place. A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.
This song is a under-appreciated gem.
The ad Iam out
This is one of the best and saddest songs written by anyone. It points out God's forgiveness for those who ask for it, but also the pain and suffering that can be caused by senseless acts that Eric wrote about. Extremely powerful.
Still in 2018 the most honest thought out song in my Opinion
Damn this song is good
Always holding up up and
There is nothing that quite compares to Eric Church...
Echoes of the Man in Black...
EC can write!....he tells stories...
Not many left....I think Johnny Cash wud luv EC!....God bless y'all.
509 Howard loop pansy's and piano and a monobanjo in Oklahoma south of Grove my heart belongs to the ridge where's the red birds steel seeds and the squirrels burry them pardon my twang God bless america
Inventing a way that is soundly and musicality
I'm pretty sure I saw an interview that said he never intended this song to make radio. But he wanted the video seen.
It's an amazing song!
Death isn't coming for you, its natural and meaningful
A love is always fighting in family
Playing video games and protecting in water here
Eric Church every song you sing. Is Pure Gold. You Rock!!!🎼🎤🎼💦💦💙💙
Nyce like tis.very movin
Now this a story like real country music.👍👍👍👏👏👏🍻🍻🍻
I respect church this song was wrote so well and all emotion got a tear in my eye not many songs and artist do that for me but this guy did
This song gives me chills.
Wow! Absolutely an amazing song and makes you really wonder about it all.
I just saw Eric Church in concert for the third time in the past two years. Cheyenne Frontier Days. I've been attending live concerts for the past 42 years and Eric Church might be the best live performer that I've ever seen. Crazy good live.
Love Love Love Eric Church Don't Get Me Wrong I'm Only into Woman But Love Eric Church Music !~!~!~
2018 anyone?
It sends chills down my body at 4:14 only good powerful songs can do that to me.
Very Underrated song, but probably one of the best I’ve ever heard and may ever hear. A great story, and needs an even better songwriting to writer to make it, like Eric.
This has to be the most unappreciated songs in history. Still listening in 2018
Love all EC's records but this one tops the list
One of those outstanding Church songs that you don't hear on the air 'round here (So Cal). Just not commercialized enough for revenue focused broadcast.
The only thing different I would have done on this video is to have the two ladies give a hug at the end..sort of a sign of loss and sorrow for both of them..with a little respect.
Just a thought.. but perhaps Dark Sife, Knives of New Orleans, and Lightning coincide with each other?.. like perhaps after the last verse of Dark Side someone messes with his child and he kills them and begins his runaway (Knives of New Orleans).. then he is caught and sentenced to the death penalty (Lightning).. just a thought.
Love these down home knda guys..putting a musicians heart and soul in songs is why I love music all my life..miss my daddy and Grandpa playing every weekend 12 strings
Heck yeah. Bring back capital punishment. Let's bring the crime down.
Who's here is from 2018! WHOO
One of the most underrated songs ever
I was taken back a bit the first time I heard this song. It has a strong message but it's delivered in a very personable manner.
I didn't know he writes...this.......
My husband killed someone over the weekend and all I can think of is this song. It was an accident he hit an Amish buggy and killed a 23 year old mother and wife, I am having a nervous breakdown
good song of some one who is changing
Watched my parent take that last breath I didn't cry thought. it was the right thing now that time has passed and I've started to grieve it was the closing of a chapter in my life that still haunts me.Brothers still in jail where I believe he belongs Guess what I'm trying to say is the right thing doesn't make it the easy thing. So here I sit confused and emotionally spent maby Its time for me to just give up and leave this old 🌎
This was his first song
Best thing going on in country music for the past ten years....glad he hasn't given in to the man and still does his thing....awesome song writer
don johnson
Was this video an attempt at political correctness ? White robber, Black clerk. OMG the shit he would have caught if it were reversed
USMC22ndMEU I know this may sound a little strange, but my Uncle is actually the guy that played the robber in this video. He is a Louisville theater graduate who does a lot of different types of acting. He said Church just basically went for who portrayed his message best, and gave the feel he wanted to express. That's how that story came about.
That could be very true, But he never would have done it the other way. Just sayin
How did he go from this to what he is now was all about the music
This is still his best song, almost ten years later
Parts of the video was filmed at the old tennessee state prison
Love this song
Greatest Singer of MY time 90's baby I can't think of a deeper song
For my money, the greatest song ever written!!!
2018 ANYONE
What can I say , Eric from the time I first heard your voice and was able to be at the stage coach concert I knew you would be a legend. . My daughter and I would not have missed it for the world.
Still to this day after all the amazing music he's put out...this is my #1 favorite song from him & I started to say " oooh its time to take me to church" when it played lol.
IF ANY SONG WAS TO OPEN EYES N HEARTS, THIS SHOULD BE THE ONE TO DO IT! IT WON'T THOUGH, FOLKS DO NOT CARE FOR LIFE OUTSIDE THEIR OWN IN THIS TIME OF LIVING THUS NOT MANY WILL BE SO MOVED BY THIS TRUTH OF LIFE! GOD BLESS YOU MR. CHURCH GOOD MANLY! YOU DO TRY TO OPEN HEARTS N FOR THAT, GOD KNOWS YOU! TRUTH! BE GOOD DO GOOD RECIEVE GOOD! GOD BLESS!🙏🌹
Powerful stuff!
or it might b idk
050377 is not his bday so what is it
I heard this song this first time I thought Johnny Cash must have had a hand in it. I fell in love with EFC and his music that day.
This song gives me chills as it is. Watching the video, though . . .Wow.
I would say Springsteen's Nebraska album had some influence as he has with some of his other songs. I consider him the "Springsteen" of country music.
Best song ever
This song gets to me every time I listen to it love it
Does anyone else get goosebumps, even after listening to this song for the 10,000th time? It's like an addiction.
Forgot how much I love this song. Makes me cry every time!
lightning in my vains ! just know that I have always loved you. please forgive me for riding the lightning all my life.I love you sweet pee!
Goddamn he's good.
