Chumbawamba - We Don't Go To God's House Anymore Lyrics

Driving on the bypass to Damascus
I saw a preacher trying to hitch a ride
With a pair of broken wings
And a suitcase full of sins
He gathered up his dreams and jumped inside
Pulling Malatesta from his suitcase
He lifted up his voice and began to sing
'My hymns of desperation lead to action...
And this is where the serious fun begins.'
We don't go to God's house anymore
Saw the light and walked right out the door
We don't go to God's house
It's more fun in the dog house
We don't go to God's house anymore

Well driving on, I tasted sweet salvation
As we sung away the pulpit and the past
The preacherman and me
We sang such harmonies
The highway of my life went by so fast
The preacher, he got off at the crossroads
He said, 'This is where I end, and you begin'
He left behind the wings and the Malatesta
And the memory of the songs we both did sing
We don't go to God's house anymore
Saw the light and walked right out the door
We don't go to God's house
It's more fun in the doghouse
We don't go to God's house anymore

  6. A.... S....

Great music as ever from a band for whom I have the utmost respect. Personally , though, I still choose to be in God's house every sunday and would not miss it for all the doghouses in the world.

  7. A.... B....

"FOOKIN FABULOUS". Great band and as the other people say totally underrated.

  8. C.... T....

Where can I download this song?

  10. B.... C....

    Wtf is a malatesta

  11. O.... ....

I'm a believer and I like the song and it's message. I don't hold grudges against people based off their beliefs

  12. b.... ....

It's really weird to hear a song that is critical of Christianity, yet if you were for some reason unable to hear the lyrics, the music particularly their harmony, sounds exactly like a Christian song. They've actually done this on several songs, particularly English Rebel Songs.

  13. L.... R....

    Estan mui bueno los vieos

  14. M.... L....

bitchy twatty comments on here.enjoy the music

  15. F.... B....

love this song love the meaning .it makes me feel good that i am an atheist

    F.... B....

    Amen to that.

  16. B.... M....

Chumbawamba released this song in 1998, just after their extremely successful Tubthumper. But this song is not in Tubthumper. Neither is Top of the World, also released in 1998, on Uneasy Listening.

  17. J.... C....

I'm an anarchist and I look good doing it and chumbawaba look good singing it

  18. I.... T....

    Neither nor I

  19. L.... W....

  20. m.... s....

    sukak kali awak man

  21. K.... H....

Is it weird that I'm not an anarchist but love Chumbawamba?

    K.... H....

    +Kevin15047 Nope. Join the crowd.

    K.... H....

Loving Chumbawamba isn't weird at all. Not being an anarchist is weird.

    K.... H....

Not weird at all, they play music,
a communication medium which needs no language,
let alone a common political or deistic worldview.

  22. S.... B....

    One of favs

  23. e.... m....

Getting a bit of alabama3 vibe, great stuff!

    e.... m....

+eck macdonald don't dance to techno anymore

    e.... m....

Long ago I read somewhere that they contributed to this song.

  24. P.... R....

I still go to God's house.
    It's worthwhile

    P.... R....

No, but he was the last living God to his people we've had, and the Last Ruling Emperor of a long, long age of Empires, that started in Rome, and ended in Ethiopia. The only Emperor to not have his Empire fall to dust around him, who kept his Imperial titles all his life, Haille Sellassie.

We were evicted from beyond the Grave, on behalf of the "The Estate of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor of Abyssinia, Haille Sellasie, King of Ethiopia, King of Zion and  conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, blah blah blahddy da". We didn't even know . . . .

"Get out of my fucking crib you filthy butterface bastards. . . "

    P.... R....

@Paul Roberts What value does it add for 10% annually?

    P.... R....

You've got it the wrong way around Stacy.

    P.... R....

You seem to be a decent fellow that causes no harm.  I will focus my antagonism of hypocrisy in Christianity elsewhere.  Carry on my friend.

    P.... R....

Well you worship massmurder, rape, killing babies (that is in the Bible - Egyptian emperor remember?)

  25. e.... ....

No Seorez, you're not the only one who loves this song who does not hate religion.
Chumbawamba is one of the most underrated groups ever. I cringe when someone
refers to them as a one hit wonder. They have at least 25 good-great songs.

    e.... ....

I'm more into metal, which regularly gets the criticism "it's not singing, just people screaming and/or shouting." So I hate tubthumping because the worst heavy metal sounds similar. And it was only the single that I was talking about.

    e.... ....

They did a lot better. But you are right. Tubthumping was a good song. But they played punk, folk, rock and everything in between.

    e.... ....

no, It just show you do not listen to lyrics.

    e.... ....

just like r.e.m. and Courtney love ´
    youre so right@micmac274

    e.... ....

elofan54 every thing except pubhumper is god speaks by to us lowly humans

  26. G.... ....

beautiful song, a shame more people haven't crawled out of that cave called church/religions.

    G.... ....

+Gusty85 That's an ignorant thing to say.  Please apologise to caves.

    G.... ....

Definitely. CERN technically counts as being in a cave.

    G.... ....

    Gusty85

    G.... ....

It's more of a shame that those who crawled out the religion cave done so straight into the atheism cave.

_this is not an attack on science_

    G.... ....

I believe there’s a difference between religion and free will\open mind

  27. g.... ....

This sounds best when it's on the ipod & you're staring up at cathedral ceilings. York Minster's a good one.  I've no idea if that proves that there's a transcendent being who directs my life or not.

  28. B.... ....

How's the state working for you?

  29. w.... ....

id play this song in church if could

  30. D.... ....

lol, anarchy. How is that working out for you.

    D.... ....

Working out pretty well in Spain.

  31. S.... ....

got the record but don´t know how to get it out on youtube :(

  32. N.... M....

    Absolutely brilliant music.

  33. J.... W....

  39. t.... ....

    U Don't Dans 2 Tekno Anymore

  40. M.... ....

This is my favorite Chumbawamba song in the entire cataloge of their work, and I think I have everything! My second favorite is the AMAZING cover of 'Safetypin Stuck In My Heart" by Patrik Fitzgerald, but I do love his version of that one more. Chumbawamba is my favorite band ever! Greeetings from Tennessee, USA!

  41. S.... ....

Am I the only one who's not a religion hating Atheist but still likes the song?

  42. S.... D....

    Nice and catchy.

  43. G.... l....

im seeing these at arcane music festival :)

  44. f.... ....

  49. K.... M....

Ohhh man, this guys are great!!!

  50. s.... 0....

@gREENbUILT21 Yep just stumbled on it, not disappointed. Love it particularly when religion gets a bashing. This shall be dedicated to the victims of sexual abuse at the hands of the churches.

  51. c.... ....

    Great song,by a great band!!!

  52. T.... C....

I think it was recorded especially for the album. Haven't been able to find it anywhere since. It was recorded with American Anarchist band alabama 3 so it may be on one ofr their albums.

    T.... C....

Alabama 3 were a British communist band, not an American anarchist band

  53. M.... s....

    nice song :D

  54. g.... ....

If you just stumbled upon this song PLEASE give it a chance...you won't be disappointed. Its more fun in the doghouse
