Chuck Berry - Havana Moon Lyrics

Havana moon, Havana moon
Me all alone with jug of rum
Me stand and wait for boat to come
Is long de night, is quiet de dark
De boat she late, it's twelve o'clock
Me watch de tide easing in
Is low de moon but high de wind
Havana moon, Havana moon

Me all alone, me open de rum
Is long de wait for boat to come
American girl come back to me
We'll sail away across de sea
We'll dock in New York
De building's high
We find a home in de sky
Havana moon, Havana moon

Me still alone, me sip de rum
Me wonder when de boat she come
To bring me love, oh sweet little thing
She rock 'n' roll, she dance and sing
She hold me tight, she touch me lips
Me eyes they close, me heart she flip
Havana moon, Havana moon

But still alone me drinking de rum
Begin to think de boat no come
American girl she tell a lie
She say "Till then," she mean "Goodbye"
Havana moon, Havana moon

Me lay down alone, was good de rum
Me fall asleep, de boat she come
De girl she look till come de dawn
She weep and cry, return for home
De whistle blow, me open me eyes
Was bright de sun, was blue de sky
Me grab me shoes, me jump and run
Me see de boat head for horizon
Havana moon, is gone de rum

De boat she sail, my love she gone
Havana moon, Havana moon
Havana moon, Havana moon

  23. V.... T....

Love this, it is my favorite! What are the chords? I can't get it.

    V.... T....

I'm not great at theory so this may be entirely wrong. For the opening riff try this. Use the Gm on the 10th fret, I play it 4 times. Then slide back to Fm on the 8th fret and play it 3 times. Then I bar all six  and slide up to the 6th fret, play the A# once while hammering unto the 8th fret on the 6th string only. Play that (C) four times the a back to the A# again twice then back to the C once. When I play the C, 8th fret,  I use 3 fingers to mute the other strings. Gives this a try. Make sure to use the same rhythm Chuck does. Work with it. I'm not sure its right but it sounds ok to me. Hope this might help.

@jamhound1 Only Chuck was the first

The Louie Louie chord progression actually comes from a latin tune called "El Loco Cha Cha". It's literally the exact same chords.

    old guy

  47. s.... h....

    great song

  48. C.... C....

Isn't it a coincidence that this song sounds just like the original "Louie Louie" that was written and performed by Richard Berry? I wonder if Richard and Chuck are related.

  49. m.... ....

love this song from in my childhood days :))

  50. D.... F....

I love the story. It's my favorite Chuck Berry song.

  51. J.... B....

Hardly rock -'n-roll, but such a catching song about a guy who, due to too much rum, misses his boat to america !!

  52. L.... ....

In my world, Chuck Berry is The King of Rock'nRoll.

  53. P.... A....

ok i just discover this song in starbucks sounds great

    P.... A....

Ah the good old days when a place like Starbucks played music not shit.

  54. g.... ....

Richard Berry (no relation to Chuck) wrote "Louie Louie" in 1957. I read where he said his inspiration was " Havana Moon". Play them in sequence, this one first, and you will hear the connection.

  55. R.... S....

Luv It! Been so long since I heard this one. When I was a teenager, I loved this song and never knew this was Chuck Berry singing. So calypso! Talented man.

  56. b.... ....

I had the priv to see the master, CB in '86 at the Ventura Fairgrounds, in CA, awesome show, everyone was on their feet

  57. m.... ....

    @Z1cky

Don't get your hopes too high. He's old. Really old. He can barely sing and play, but he's still the same guy. If you're okay with that, by all means go see him if you can.

  58. P.... ....

The lusty howl he gives right after "To bring me love" has to be one of the best screams in RNR. A young dude on the prowl...

  59. A.... T....

Im proud to be a young fan of Berry (19) and hope to see the ageing God at some point this year as he tours England.

  60. s.... ....

    panalo!! ang galeng!! :)

  61. s.... ....

    havaaaaaaaaaaana MOOOOOONah!!!!

  62. s.... ....

just got into this song today...played it like 10 times it produces a feeling...i cant explain

  63. J.... C....

The original came out in 1957 by Chuck Berry from his "After School Session" LP (his first LP). It was re-recorded for his 1979 LP "Rock It". And yes, Chuck wrote the song. The song was also an inspiration for the late Richard Berry to write "Louie Louie", after hearing the song along with "El Loco Cha Cha" by Ricky Rillera.

  64. U.... ....

Can anyone tell me the year this was released?
Also was Chuck Berry the original songwriter of this song? If not who originally wrote / sang it?

  65. s.... ....

chuck berrys golden decade 1955-1965...go buy it
