Christy Moore - The January Man Lyrics

The January man he goes around in woollen coat and boots of leather
The February man still shakes the snow from of his clothes and blows his hands
The man of March he sees the Spring and wonders what the year will bring
And hopes for better weather

Through April rain the man goes down to watch the birds come in to share the summer
The man of May stands very still to watch the children dance away the day
In June the man inside the man is young and wants to lend a hand
And smiles at each new comer

In July the man in cotton short he sits and thinks and being idle
The August man in thousands takes the road to find the sun and watch the sea
September man is standing near to saddle up another year
And Autumn is his bridle

The man of new October takes the rain and early frost is on his shoulder
The poor November man sees fire and mist and wind and rain and winter ere
December man looks through the snow to let eleven brothers know
They're all a little older

The January man he comes around again in coat and boots of leather
To take another turn and walk along the icy roads he knows so well
The January man is here the start of each and every year
Along the road forever

Christy Moore The January Man Comments

Love The Steeleye Span version BUT Christy Moore’s version really is a classic version of this Beautiful song .

  2. D.... F....

    Bert jansch the best version

    D.... F....

I agree. The raw, ethereal quality that Bert Jansch is able to bring out (acoustic guitar and the harp) is lost when this song is electric and polished. Bert Jansch's verision makes one feel what the lyrics are expressing- a melancholy/poetic expression of the passage of time.

This is the only man and only version

    t.... b....

U havent heard bert jansch version

  4. k.... ....

The February man still shakes the snow from off his BOOTS and blows his hands.

    k.... ....

    "Clothes" is an improvement, though.
"...SNOW from off his CLOTHES, and BLOWS his hands"

I think for doing such a great rendition of the song, we can let the man use a little artistic license.

  5. M.... D....

Are the accompanying musicians Declan Sinnot and Donal Lunny?

    M.... D....

    Mark Dougherty Yes indeed.

Can you sing and do you want to surprise a Dutch women born in the month of January? Just let me know, I've made a Dutch song 'Januarivrouw' for my wife, based on the Christy Moore song 'January Man'. You might like to learn it.

  9. R.... L....

Heard an amazing version in a pub in Kilkenny a few months back.  Great song.

  10. K.... A....

This is the most beautiful, moving song ever.  I remember Mike Harding singing it on his TV show in the early 80s.  Rediscovering it now feels like proof that it is absolute, basic truth.  And ever shall be.

  11. A.... W....

Beautiful song. I actually came here searching for a different song of the same title!

How lovely to hear the man who wrote January Man.  Definitely Dave Goulder.  I'm more familiar with the version made so many years ago by the incomparable Bert Jansch (passed away fairly recently): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td3FJfc8iw4  He recorded this song on his album "Moonshine".  Bert Jansch was a member of the British group "Pentangle".  You can find Bert Jansch playing other songs elsewhere on Youtube.  Rolling Stone named him one of the best guitarists of the past 50 years.

Am i right in saying Mike Harding did a version of this song in the early 80's?. I can remember him singing a song about the changing seasons on his old tv show.

    b.... ....

    Yes he did, Bonnie.

    b.... ....

Yes he did and I saw him play it on stage 😁

  18. m.... ....

A beautiful interpretation, haunting and atmospheric. I love the simple seasonal theme of this song....very grounding. Cheers Christy!

In my world he is officially a shaman, a storyteller, and a true reflection of feeling and profound human heart laid out for all to see.

for many years i have been a fan of Christy , from his roots with Moving Hearts and on to his many solo exploits and diverse collaborrations with other singer /songwriters .... an absolute genius writer and an awesome vocalist ....alas only once i have witnessed the man live on-stage ......tremendous performance i have to say ............live long & prosper Christy

    @Percy1969
It was written by Dave Goulder. Mike Harding did record an excellent version, it's on Bomber's Moon; download it from 7digital. Bert Jansch recorded a good version too.

  22. B.... L....

A blessed storyteller that is a part of creation. We have forgotten how to tell stories, and give them meaning! Instead we sit transfixed in front of the TV. We have to wake up!

  23. B.... L....

It's funny. In this age of instant gratification and unfortunately, manipulation; it is songs like these that are always passed on. A simple but poignant realization that we are part of the earth and the seasons are the rhythm of our lives. Especially here in Canada. Great old classic.

  24. E.... ....

    thats Christy Moore you moron

    E.... ....

Overdo, but I suspect the person means that Dave Goulder was the songwriter.

    E.... ....

Its a dave goulder song idiot

  25. t.... ....

Great song but who is the fat bastard singing it, he looks like Peter Griffin.

  26. j.... ....

Try Robin Garside's version, although I'm not sure if its on You Tube

  27. A.... ....
