Christy Moore - North And South Of The River Lyrics

I want to reach out over the lough
And feel your hand across the water
Walk with you along an unapproved road
Not looking over my shoulder
I want to see
I want to hear
To understand your fears
But we're north and south of the river

I've been doing it wrong
All of my life
This holy town has turned me over
A young man running from what he didn't understand
As the wind from the lough just blew colder and colder

There was a badness that had its way
But love was not lost
It just got mislaid
North and south of the river

Can we stop playing these old tattoos?
Darling I don't have the answer
I want to meet you where you are
I don't need you to surrender
There is no feeling so alone
As when the one you're hurting is your own
North and south of the river

Some high ground is not worth taking
Some connections are not worth making
There's an old church bell no longer ringing
And some old songs not worth singing

North and south of the river
North and south of the river

    R.... B....

You don't have to apologise . My forefathers weren't that nice to yours when they had the chance either. We're all Irish brothers now . Beautiful comment

    R.... B....

@Oisín Mícheál Ó Ceallaigh im getting goosebumps listening to christy and reading your kind comment i love our country and our people if the protestant and catholic working class could be united we could accomplish anything need to get rid off inefectual polititions who revel in keeping us devided not to mention that lot accoss the irish sea

    R.... B....

@Robbie Banks couldn't agree more. Christy is a great balodeer and talking to young protestant friends I know we have more in common than separating us . Too bad the working class uniting was stopped by the church and the government or we might have avoided the troubles if the past fifty years or so . I have strong hopes for the future though. Go néirí an bóthar leat agus beannacht dé ort a chara . May the road rise to meet you and god bless you my friend

    R.... B....

@Oisín Mícheál Ó Ceallaigh I consider myself very fortunate .although coming from a fascist run (uda ) estate .my early intrest in punk music led to a wet behind the ears young protestant led to my mixing with my fellow irishman so the crap didn.t effect me as much also my travels fishing all over ireland has led me to realize we are the people .who but dup or ulster unionists wouldn.t want to b irish we have hearts and souls and i love it

  55. k.... ....

    Breaks my heart.

  56. r.... ....

It was a collaboration between Christy, Bono and the Edge. He sang it and they did back up vocals. Then Christy did this acoustic version by himself, followed by U2 doing a version in 97. Great tune, whatever version you listen to, I like them all!

    r.... ....

was co written by Christy, Bono and the Edge

  57. E.... ....

    Fuckin beast tune..

  58. U.... ....

    Classic Song of U2 ;-)

    U.... ....

That they both wrote. ;-)Do your homework.

    U.... ....

Lyrically they both collaborated on it yes. Musically it's U2's baby from *way before* either artist released a version. The song was originally demo'ed by U2 in an earlier form at Dublin STS in 1990 and known as 'Walk On By' / 'Take Today', the origins and core of the song are there minus the lyrics of NaSotR. A beautiful aching U2 melody.

  59. N.... K....

Classic song. Such power. An apt song for our time
