Christy Moore - Cricklewood Lyrics

Come all you true born Irishmen and listen to my song
I am a bold buck navvy and I don't know right from wrong
Of late I've been transported from Ireland's holy shore
My case is sad my crime is bad I was born poor

Cricklewood Cricklewood
You stole my youth away
I was young and innocent
You were old and grey

If you are born poor me lads it is a shocking state
The judge will sit upon your crime and this he will relate
I find the prisoner guilty and the law I must lay down
Let him be transported straight away to Camden Town

Take him down to Cricklewood and leave him in the pub
Call the barman landlord then propose to him a sub
Leave him down in Cricklewood mid mortar bricks and lime
Let him rot in Cricklewood until the end of time

Am I right in stating that Tony Grehan from Boyle who is a friend of Christy's, put the music to this poem written by the late great john B Keane.

@maxvolmue99 you hit the nail on the head, escape was not a choice it was the attempted destruction of a culture and a people, by economic means, they tried everything else to break the Irish Soul, but you cannot hide from the truth.....Why is KIng Menes first King of Egypt buried in County Tyrone??? Why is Queen Scotia, daughter of Akhenaton who gave her name to Nova Scotia and Scotland, buried outside Tralee, why is Queen Tea, buried near Tara...????

  15. m.... ....

@rabbithog - its easy to say this - but england offered an apparently easy escape to the young irish in the 50s' through to the 80's.......just because people went there it didnt mean it was good and pleasant - christy sings these songs to capture the scene of the refugee in an another mans land.and that land happened to be owned by the very rulers that ironically caused these young people to leave home.with suppression and trade restrictions and penal laws holding back ireland's development

  16. f.... ....

@petrolbom What??? A better life?? In England?? I´m neither English nor Irish, but I´ve been to both countries...and come on...bad food, worse feather, ugly girls, rubbish everywhere, fights at night....no thnx
