Christy Moore - Bunch Of Thyme Lyrics

Come all ye maidens young and fair
And you that are blooming in your prime
Always beware and keep your garden fair
Let no man steal away your thyme

For thyme it is a precious thing
And thyme brings all things to my mind
Thyme with all its flavours, along with all its joys
Thyme, brings all things to my mind

Once I had a bunch of thyme
I thought it never would decay
Then came a lusty sailor
Who chanced to pass my way
And stole my bunch of thyme away

The sailor gave to me a rose
A rose that never would decay
He gave it to me to keep me reminded
Of when he stole my thyme away

Come all ye maidens young and fair
And you that are blooming in your prime
Always beware and keep your garden fair
Let no man steal away your thyme

This was kinda like my guilty pleasure song when I was a boy. My dad loved Foster and Allen and played their music in the house a lot. I always secretly liked some of their songs but I was to cool to admit it 😀 2019
20 years latet " Bunch of Thyme" came into my head while remembering my Dad so I decided to actually look up the song and actually Really listen to the lyrics and understand what the song is actually about.
It's pure genius and a message to women to be cautious about giving away your purity to lusty men.

a wise may for sure i loved the days of long ago, it seems it is hard to make sense of that cause we didn't have the same pot, we had very little but we enjoyed it a whole lot.

  44. D.... F....

GET THIS!! bunch of thyme is originally an english folk tune. danny boy music was composed by a scottish lady, the words by an english man (manchester, i think), kevin barry music was originally called TAKE ME BACK TO DEAR OLD BLIGHTY, a lovely song about a homesick english sailor. Molly malone was originally an EDINBURGH street song!! The tri-coloured ribbon was either Cornish or English originally. Music is one of the seven arts and it TRAVELS. culture does.

  45. D.... D....

Went to see them in Cardiff, had to sit at the back because the first 50 rows were filled with priests and nuns all out on a jolly..

  60. b.... b....

  61. s.... ....

There's a dark undercurrent to this old song. The 'bunch of thyme' was a folk euphemism for innocence/maidenhead/virginity. This is what was 'stolen' by the sailor. However, the nasty little story doesn't end there. The 'sailor gave to her a rose, a rose that never would decay'. This was the 'devil's rose' - a euphemism for syphillis, at that time incurable. This isn't a romantic love song, but a coded warning!

  62. E.... H....

He gave me a beautiful rose.
I let him have my time.
It is precious. So is he.
Some things are meant to be
not for just a time, but eternity.

Thank you for this most tender live performance of Foster & Allen.
    My heart is applauding!
With love from my fair garden
    ... Evy
