Chris Stapleton - Scarecrow In The Garden Lyrics

Well he came from Northern Ireland
Searching for the free man's ground
And he came to bet his fortune
On a West Virginia plow
He built a house of timber
And raised a redhead son
Then they worked the land together
And prayed the rain would come

There's a scarecrow in the garden
That looks like Lucifer
And I've been reading Revelations
With my bare feet in the dirt

Well the redhead son got older
And took a brown eyed wife
And the fields were green as dollars
Cause the dirt was black as night
I came in late September
The youngest one of three
And my sisters off and married
So the land was left to me

There's a scarecrow in the garden
That looks like Lucifer
And I've been reading Revelations
With my bare feet in the dirt

I know every single fence post
Every rock to go around
I've been staring at the red oak
Where I know they'll lay me down

The fields ain't what they once were
The rains just seem to flood
And I've been thinking about that river
Wondering how it turns to blood

I've been sitting here all morning
I was sitting here all night
There's a bible in my left hand
And a pistol in my right

    And I've been reading Revelation...

“The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.”

    ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭1:1-3‬

  9. Trenton Bradley

  13. taylorbender1

Never been raised in the country yet I love this song so much. Music truly is a universal language.

  14. Brad Lee

“I’ve been sitting here all morning. I was sitting here all night...”

So there’s a Bible in one hand and a pistol in the other. He’s been in the same spot all night and all morning.

    He committed suicide?

    Why though?

Because the land wasn’t producing anymore?

Someone help me. I don’t understand.

    Mrs Mummy

I think you need to listen between the lines a lot of metaphors

    Trent Jackson

The story teller is a 3rd generation farmer who’s fallen upon hard times. The rains are flooding the crops and he’s likely unable to make ends meet. The pressure of carrying on the family farm and being unsuccessful have finally beaten him. He’s a religious man looking for redemption and in his left hand lies salvation and the right hand his doom. He’s about to give up and commit suicide. He’s been staring at the red oak where he knows they’ll bury him.

I’m a third generation farmer as well and I really feel the weight of what the story teller is going through. There’s something about farming that is generational and really is in your blood. I took over our farm at 25 when my dad died and there’s an immense pressure to carry on the work that was done before you. The story teller feels like he’s letting down his family and his ancestors and he can no longer carry the burden.

  20. Greg Sovine

How can one guy have so much talent? Saw him last weekend..he's better live.

  21. A Blonde Girl With a Love of Metal

Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell are the reason why I'm now tuning my recommendations so there aren't cookie-cutter country artists in my otherwise *quite* loud music recs. Love this to bits.
'Scarecrow' made me pick up my guitar again for the first time in almost 8 years. I couldn't just idly listen to the chords and NOT try to play them.

  22. logawinner

The humbleness beats the music and the feeling in your soul does too. Yes we all have that feeling because we are Christians.

  23. 300bpm

this guy just writes one great fucking song after another great fucking song after . . .

“The fields were green as dollars cause the dirt was black as night.”

This shows how great of a song writer Chris is IMO. The story telling in the song is amazing. Like Chris could write anything he wants. Dude could write a lyrical rap song if he wanted. Just a once in a generation type talent.

  34. Dàibhidh Màc Uillèam

I'm a product of Northern Irish immigrants that came to West Virginia. My family were the first white settlers in the area that is now Lincoln County.

  35. SatireDaily

I'm probably off but this song reminds me of being just so bored with the mundane. You get to the point where owning the land isn't as cool as you thought it would be and it just kind of makes the rest of life seem pointless. He knows every inch of the farm, every day is the same, So he ends it.

  36. Mase England

Me and my dad like to listen to this wile we fish

  37. Les Young

The scarecrow being the devil is in the garden because it is trying to intimidate the seeds that have been planted by The Lord amd keep them from growing

  57. Robert Davidson

Interesting. "A Bible in my left hand; and a pistol in my right". It's that pistol that's the test. That word either calls up aggression, as it has for some here, or it calls up compassion for a person in the depths. Now I wonder, which one would the New Testament suggest you respond with?

  58. Chris Woods

I thought I was somewhat of a tough guy but some of Chris's songs make cry like a damn baby

DEEP Metaphors for the sign of the times we live in. "I've been reading revelations with my barefeet in the dirt" "I've been looking at that river and wondering how it turns to blood" The book of revelations says the rivers will run red with blood. Chris is AWARE AF!

    Sarah Bowers

James Bender my favourite lyric 👌🏻
