Childers, Tyler - Rock Salt And Nails Lyrics

By the banks of the river
Where the willows hang down
The wild birds they warble
With a low moanin' sound

Way down in the hollow
Where the river runs cold
It was there I first listened
To the lies that you told

Now I lie on my back
And I see your sweet face
The past I remember
Time can't erase

And the letters you wrote me
They were written in shame
And I know that your conscience
Still echoes my name

Now if the ladies were blackbirds
If the ladies were thrushes
Well I'd lie there for hours
In the chilly cold marshes

And if the women were squirrels
With them high bushy tails
Well I'd load up my shotgun
With rock salt and nails

I'd load up my shotgun
With rock salt and nails

Tyler Childers is the greatest song writer since towns van zandt, and a far better singer. I absolutely love everything he plays, I’m not sure why country music hasn’t welcomed him in. They’re missing out on one of the greatest of all time.

Song's of my life, make me miss my uncle's that have left me here on earth.

  34. b.... ....

What's with the extra commas? It's rock salt as in salt that is in the form of little rocks. It's 2 items, rock salt & nails. Not 3, rock, salt, nails.

  35. T.... P....

I've been listening to Tyler for a year or so. He's a hell of a musician. Would love to see him and Sturgil,Cody, and Creed together. "A Real Country Tour". And maybe they could all piss on a Florida Georgia Line shirt!!

I'm so very thankful for Tyler/ his guitar stylings/ songwriting / and voice. I too am a KY boy and it just speaks to me. I've been into it for over a year since day one hearing him. But today I let this song sink in and I let myself be blue for the first time about my wife of 20yrs hurting me to the core. Won't speak bad of her, but this songs suits. Thank ya Tyler

If you found this after a breakup, may it remind you of the good. If you found this during a struggle, let it drive you. If you've fallen and find this with a bottle in your hand, let it give you courage to stand up again.

  68. b.... b....

This song is surreal for me.

Tyler Childers is a god among men

  70. C.... B....

Sorry, I just listened to Stevie Young do it. There is absolutely no comparison.

  71. M.... N....

    THE MOTHER FUCKING TRUTH!!!

  72. C.... H....

Thank you brother for being the voice of a generation of lost group of weary lonesome souls. Its a way of life, and you've really lived it

  73. T.... G....

Real, raw, and tortured. Unfortunately all truly great art flows from busted wells.

  74. K.... m....

Upchurch brought me here, thank god this guy is amazing!!

  75. I.... t....

One of the best country artists today imo.

    J.... ....

Tyler's simply amazing. Bottles And Bibles is his first materpiece he released at age 18 (Amazon has the full 13 song version). And search Soundcloud for his hits that will probably never be on an album but should be.

  80. J.... S....

Tyler ur one of a kind keep it up ur songs help me in so many ways 5 stars from me one day hope to see u live

  81. W.... P....

Anyone able to explain to me the lines about blackbirds and thrushes? is it also a hunting reference?. like sitting in a blind? Because there seems . to me, no negative association with blackbirds, thrushes or squirrrels. its just the narrator has made a pretty dark realignment of the worth of 'ladies': they're vermin. or destructive invasive species. packs a wollop, that final line.

    W.... P....

Its an old one by Utah Phillips. I kinda read it like the writer becomes a womanizer after the love of his life lied/cheated on him. Where hes just picking off birds and squirrels with his "shotgun" one and done now. No longer trusting women. But everythings open to interpretation so i like yours too 😁😁

  82. S.... M....

    he warin Cabela's boots 👍

  83. b.... b....

    Great song right here

  84. C.... L....

Ol’Utah Phillips said he wrote it when down and never much liked the song.

  85. D.... T....

Omg! So much violence! Like wtf?

  86. j.... b....

Pretty sure that the title of this song is ROCK SALT & NAILS, no comma.

  87. L.... F....

Precious down to earth music <3 his music are stories for the ones who only understand

  88. T.... L....

I hope people know this is a Steve Young song. People like Young, townes van zandt, guy clark, rodney crowell and other great songwriters of the past are being forgotten

    T.... L....

    Utah Phillips wrote it.

    T.... L....

You are correct. I assumed it was steve young but went back and looked it up.

    T.... L....

@Tyler Leech i had just looked into it 2 days ago on a whim lol

    T.... L....

@Calvin Richards such a different sound when tyler starts it in a minor chord

    T.... L....

@Doug S Steve Young version is definitely my favorite, then waylon then childers, but I do really like this version. I like the song more than any one person singing it of that makes sense.

  89. S.... a....

He has definitely listened to some Dylan. "Where the wildbirds do warble"

    S.... a....

Maybe, but this is a Steve Young song

    S.... a....

@Tyler Leech Thanks, I didnt know that

    S.... a....

@Seth anonymous after commenting this I went to make sure. I was wrong. It was written by Utah phillips, and famously recorded by steve young. Young was such a great and respected songwriter I assumed he wrote it.

    S.... a....

@Seth anonymous of the versions I've heard, (childers, waylon, Phillips and young) steve youngs is my favorite. You should definitely check it out.

  90. T.... W....

    What does this means mean?

  91. M.... J....

    Thank you...

  92. R.... 8....

How could there be 558 idiots that gave this a thumbs down

  93. J.... A....

Why have 555 people disliked this
    I wanna know
Make this blue if you wanna know too
    👇🏻

  94. W.... C....

Damn it's nice to hear some real country for once

  95. V.... K....

  97. M.... F....

Every bar I go to with a jukebox, Tyler Childers gets played....Longhaul trucker. Thank you for making my long lonesome drives filled with that voice.
