Childers, Tyler - Banded Clovis Lyrics

Tina Nolan had a man with a good place for siftin'
He invited me diggin', so I picked up my screen
And a shovel to dig and a jar of shine
He traded me fair for a bottle of wine
His brother's Barnes Mountain wine

We trudged through the snow straight up the hillside
Took a ridge for a while, then we slowly went down
To an overhang hid from the ridgeline
We bent o'er our handles and we bit in the ground
The dark and bloody ground

Was a bitch to break ground but the wine kept us goin'
The moonshine was flowin' and keepin' us warm
'Cause you can't hold a girl with a fistful of shovel
Got to find your fire in the company of corn

We dug for a while then it all turned to ashes
Found a bunch of broke flint and a few bits of bone
Then I heard Jesse yell o'er the pile he was sifting
Shook the hills like the angels were callin' us home
Jesse, Zachary come home

It was banded as hell, it was fluted and clovis
It was hot as the pistol I kept on my side
I was fiending so fierce, I was broke ass and busted
I pulled out my pistol and I took Jesse's life

A clovis like that is a hard point to find
Makes pills swift to come by with a good chunk of change
Left over for burn on whatever meanness
Whatever woman is comin' my way
Darlin' come my way

I sit in this cell for the banded clovis
I stole off of Nolan when I killed'm that day
I reckon the chase of the pills and the powder
Corn liquor and woman are the culprits to blame

This song made me snort beer through my nose. Despite the generic internet tag, I'm part of the family that gave Barnes Mountain it's name. I had to start the song over then I went and looked up to see if there was another somewhere else because he sure as hell isn't singing about us. But it also reminds me of family up that way, except it wasn't banded clovis they used to hunt for, it was ginseng. Growing up the family up in the mountains used to go seng'in, and they all had a couple of secret patches that they tended. It was legal and sold for more than weed at the time. I can imagine any of them pulling a pistol out of their back pocket if they caught some stranger in their patch.

  20. B.... B....

  45. P.... L....

The insipid state of mainstream commercial Contemporary music on Country Radio and TV?  Could this have something to do with the Corporate mainstream music mafia or is it really our collective unconscious fault? Do we respond reflexively to the onslaught of Corporate advertisements disguised as Country Pop because we are conditioned to do so or do we listen because of an internal apathy (see one and the same)?

Time to stand up for quality and vote with your concert choices and streaming selections.    Do some of us have honing mechanisms for the “real” thing that screen out the Corporate speak?    I believe so and the Youtube numbers bear this out.   Durham Cool chose these two artists for their obvious Artistry and we are not alone. Tyler Childers has docked up  7,251,819 views for White House Road-Vinyl sessions and Colton Wall is at a very respectable 2,113,136 views for his Brewery Sessions-“Sleeping on the Blacktop” video. https://www.durhamcool.com/welcome/putting-the-hurt-back-in-country-music/

    P.... L....

    Well said

  46. T.... W....

I hear the Cobain in this mans voice. Amazing song!

  47. H.... M....

I believe this is my favorite. He has a lot of good ones, but this is my favorite.

  48. N.... K....

Is it weird that this story makes me thing of Smeagol and Deagol finding the Ring?

    N.... K....

Not at all, I thought the exact same thing.

  49. D.... C....

You can see him play out the story in his eyes

  50. J.... H....

One of those artist we only get every 20 yrs or so. Please go and support this guy. I've bought all of the albums available without hesitation lol.

  51. J.... Y....

This is country music! Pure and simple, no snap or clap tracks, just plain old gut singing. From one former good old boy from Louisa to another. Keep it up! There is more talent in those hills than all of Nashville!

  52. C.... ....

thank fuck someone is still doing country

  53. N.... W....

Sackler family to pay 2 billion, Purdue Pharmaceutical to declare bankruptcy. They're the people responsible for the opioid crisis in this country. If only they could somehow pay for all the lives they ruined.

  54. M.... 7....

God bless America, God bless Appalachia, and God bless the men bringing real music back

  55. J.... D....

I don’t know if you’d get the ‘dark and bloody ground’ part if you ain’t from round here.

    J.... D....

i ain't from around there and i don't get it. can you explain?

    J.... D....

dubgrug89 since the 18th century Kentucky has been referred to as ‘the dark and bloody ground’, no one is quite sure why but we know it’s Indian in origin. So he’s making a clever play on that while referring to actually digging into the ground of his home commonwealth of Kentucky.

  56. r.... b....

his guitar licks make the murder of his friend seem almost inevitable.

  57. A.... P....

    what does clovis mean

    A.... P....

    A.... P....

    A.... P....

@Antinxi Puerto If I remember correctly, Clovis is a town i New Mexico USA, and archeologists found a civilization of Indians there, thousands of arrowheads etc

    A.... P....

@Bram Hepburn thanks bram the song makes more sense now

    A.... P....

  87. M.... J....

Thanks for restoring my faith in country music.

  88. E.... W....

I've watched several, if not all, of his videos on YouTube. I swear when that man sings he transcends somewhere and some old spirit just takes over. His eyes are so dark and they are constantly moving about. His presence on stage and the way he stares off, it's like he's living in the moment of the song. He's seeing what you're hearing. His ballads are in a class all to themselves.

    E.... W....

yessir... I had the good fortune to catch him live in Fort Worth. I had never heard of him, I befriended his road manager that day though, who ended up giving me tickets to come to see him perform that night. And holy shit was I blown away?!?!?! He's probably my favorite singer/song writer right now. This dude has some serious swagger... Check out his performance of "Nose To The Grindstone I captured that night. That little shift he does at the end of the song, lol. love it. A true southern troubadour...
