Chicago - The Road Lyrics

If you'd like to get together
Then come right over to me
Ooh, We can do anything
That you like to do
If you'd like to give your love
Then please just feel free
Because I may be gone tomorrow
And not even know your name
Now please don't misunderstand my loneliness
Let's never ever talk of time
Cause friends may fade away
And our hopes will say goodnight
And our friendship would be lost
It would be such a waste of time
So let's just
Let's have a good thing girl
And let's not worry
Let's do everything we want
And let's not cry
When it's over
When I leave
Our thing won't die
If you really understand
Then come right over to me
We can play together for a while
And still be free

Peter at his best without a doubt. Usaul song. Like how words are all grouped together

  8. J.... D....

This is one the examples of Terry's generosity, Here he gives Peter the lead vocal spot, On "Song Of The Evergreens" on VII provides Lee a great vocal debut and on X hands Walt the floor with a blinding sax solo on the opening track "Once Or Twice".

    J.... D....

Jon Dickinson song of the evergreens is sung by Lee and he does a great job.

  9. M.... C....

Esto era y sigue siendo musica, esto era una banda no las porquerias actuales. E dicho.

  10. H.... M....

My all time favorite Chicago song right here. 😊💕

  11. J.... R....

Three minutes, nine seconds of perfection! MAN, that Cetera boy could sing. Not to mention his lyrical bass playing! My fave Chicago song when I was a kid, and the classiest song ever written about groupies (thanks, Terry)! Peter just SOARS here - especially on the OHs - one of his finest vocals from the early years. His voice was just freakin' AMAZING! (And I love how he mirrors the guitar lines at the end of each verse.) Thanks for the post, man.

Thanks Tina Esposito for bying me this great album 1970.Love u forever. Maurice Brian.xxxc

What a gift she gave you!

    My favourite Chicago song.

    C.... ....

It's an excellent choice, too! The boys will never make one like it again.

  14. W.... b....

    Great song

    W.... b....

It truly shows the spirit of the late 60s.

  15. T.... M....

Wonderful little song! The late, great Terry Kath was musically intuitive and smart enough to know that Peter Cetera's voice was perfect for this tune.

  16. D.... F....

    one of my favorites

  17. T.... M....

    thanks for posting

  18. C.... K....

    Remarkable song, and lyrics!

  19. s.... ....

What a dynamite 2-record set!  I am so happy that the CD includes the single versions of "25 or 6 to 4" and "Make Me Smile."  Those classic hits in that configuration had to be acknowledged!

  20. b.... ....

Peter sounds killer on this track, glad Terry passed it along to Peter to sing it!

    b.... ....

@bassmanjoe, you're right. I doubt that the classic style of early Chicago would ever be made so readily again.

    b.... ....

Terry could've easily sung the song, but at the same time, it's a nice little workout for Pete.

    b.... ....

They did that with all their songs, got the best vocalist for the song.

@D Enriquez, did it make you feel like someone magical upon hearing it for the first time back then?

    G.... R....

    Oh Yes it Did sandinyourshoes . . . . "Back Then" . . . . & Still Does Now !!  ;-)
    Thanks 4 the Great Comment  . . .  ;-)

    G.... R....

@D Enriquez, it's a Saturday right now, and the song just fits so well for the day. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I was inspired so much by them, too.

Peter's singing is wonderful. In the story of the song, he invites a lady to spend time with him, and I think that such a thing is the key to happiness. Who wants to be alone all the time?

    G.... R....

    sandinyourshoes , U'r Welcome Anytime . . .  I couldn't Agree More; Peter's Singing is Just The Best !!  ;-) Take Care My Friend . . . ;-)

    G.... R....

    @D Enriquez, I appreciate it!

  23. g.... f....

Thanks posting ! Love the song

  24. G.... 5....

I heard this on deep tracks

  25. T.... L....

Terry Kath was a self taught singer not Peter Cetera!

  26. A.... R....

James William Guercio was the trumpeter in the fledgling Big Thing? I thought that was Lee Loughnane. I knew Guercio was Chicago's original business manager and producer. Guercio did produce music for Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, particularly their 1967 album TOGETHER ON BROADWAY.

  27. A.... R....

An afterthought:Paul McCartney's beatles classic GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE inspired Walter Parazaider to form a rock band with a horn section. So WP joined forces with Robert Lamm,Terry Kath,Danny Seraprine,Lee Loughnane and James Pankow and formed The Big Thing(Peter Cetera later joined to replace the original bassist),leading to Chicago Transit Authority, then after legal threats from the original equivalently-named organization,Chicago.

  28. A.... R....

Walter Parazaider's father was a trumpeter, playing in various dance bands throughout Chicago and other areas of Illinois as well. So Walter followed in his dad's footsteps, but playing other reeded instruments like saxophone, flute and clarinet. I'm sure WP can play trumpet, bassoon, tuba and oboe also. WP continued studying at DePaul University in Chicago(he first took lessons as a child;he said around age 9).

  29. c.... ....

Peter Cetera's voice sounds so good in this song. He sounds so young and clear!

Love this song but i would probably kick a guy in the shins if he sang this to me! ;-)

  30. 7.... ....

    They aren't yet? WTF!

  31. J.... M....

    High school memories...

  32. g.... f....

so why arent these guys in the HALL OF FAME !!

    g.... f....

    They are now. :)

  33. d.... ....

the marching anthem of free love?

  34. l.... ....

    Isnt that Cetera on lead?

    l.... ....

    loreroad yes

  35. M.... S....

Very underated song! Notice the clarinet in the beginning?

    M.... S....

I didn't realize it was a clarinet until seeing the 50th anniversary tour. Ray sure did Walt proud.

  36. H.... L....

I listened to the song again, solely listening to the drum part. I didn't even notice the awesome dwelling underneath the rest of the awesome

  37. f.... ....

@arhuxtable Loughnane, by his own admission, was not heavily into vocals. He boasted that he got three leads on 23 albums. But he did like to contribute to the writing.

  38. A.... R....

Terry Kath wrote THE ROAD. Chicago probably recorded a take of the song with TK singing lead that didn't make the master version.

  39. B.... J....

Fresh and original. The whole group.

  40. A.... R....

James Pankow wrote COLOUR MY WORLD and could have sang lead since his trombone was not involved. Robert Lamm wrote 25 OR 6 TO 4 although Peter Cetera sang lead. Lee Loughnane wrote CALL ON ME and Cetera sang lead because either Loughnane was a terrible vocalist or he had to focus on his trumpet.

  41. A.... R....

FANCY COLOURS is here. I hope it still is anyway. There's another video containing FC preceded by TO BE FREE and NOW MORE THAN EVER. That sounds like the LP playing though.

  42. w.... ....

I would like to hear The Quadraphonic Version of this album.

  43. D.... ....

@actormanic That actually varied by author. Robert deliberately wrote songs to fit voices. Jimmy would make them compete to see who sang a tune the best. Terry and Peter typically wrote for their own voices but there were exceptions ... this one was written by Terry but sung by Peter. Likewise, Peter wrote WISHING YOU WERE HERE but Terry sang the main verses.

  44. A.... R....

Funny you should say that. My mom and dad were married in '70 and my dad will turn 62 in a few weeks.

  45. a.... ....

Terry wrote it. Peter sang it. They were really a "democratic" group, and if one of them felt that a song he wrote would be better served by someone else singing lead, he'd let that other guy sing it. I love their early stuff so very much. I'll never get tired of hearing it.

    a.... ....

That's why early Chicago was so great, the songwriters didn't have overpowering egos.

    a.... ....

You´re right, and their early stuff is much different, and even better than post- Terry

    a.... ....

Now I understand why Peter doesn't associate with the other versions of Chicago post Terry. This is great music and great harmony.

  46. n.... ....

How time flies. Young lovers who listened to this song in 1970 are senior citizens now!

  47. c.... ....

I love them and just love this song =)

  48. t.... ....

I really really like this song ... saw them many times in the 70's! Thanks for posting!
