Chicago - Policeman Lyrics

Everyday he wakes up
As his bare feet hit the floor
Grabs a cup of coffee
Straps his Magnum on once more
Feeds the cat he lives with
Since his wife walked out the door
In nine years he'll retire with a pension.
Everyday he suffers
'Cause he sees all kinds of pain
Sometimes feels helpless
In a world that's gone insane
Then he wins a battle
It restores his faith again
It's only human kindness he is after.
He is a Policeman, you know
All the years and nothing to show
He is a Policeman, you know.
Every night he comes home
With a six-pack all alone
Feeds the cat he lives with
He picks up the telephone
Needs to talk with someone
But the only love he's known
Was lost forever, he is a Policeman.
He is a Policeman, you know
All the years and nothing to show
He is a Policeman, you know
All the years and nothing to show

This song and No Tell Lover draw you in with the lower register Tbone. It fills the musical space for you to dive into.

    J.... M....

I agree how come they did not use much baritone sax? Sounds so good with Tower of Power

  7. D.... J....

Bring this song back to honor the policeman of today.

  8. J.... D....

Be a GREAT theme song for Chicago P.D.

  9. J.... D....

  10. C.... V....

    I've always loved this song.

  11. p.... ....

Robert Lamm's dad was a NYC cop. This song was dedicated to him.

    p.... ....

Is a good thing to know.

    p.... ....

Never heard that before. However, robert is a liberal...he's in that cult...and that cult demands that he hate cops. So - this song has always struck me as hypocritical and empty

    p.... ....

@willard2729 willi 2729: You have to look both ways to give a fair judgement. The cops do their job, remember all institutions in the world create vices and misery. To the other side is just a song. Think of that.

  18. J.... L....

In my 64 yrs. I've had experiences with both good and bad cops, most were good guys -- some incredibly nice and helpful. This song is a great tribute to the good ones I'll never forget.

  19. M.... S....

suave y deliciosa es esta cancion, muy cool

  20. B.... E....

A tapestry of great lyrics and melodies. In these troubling times it's constructive to remember that the vast majority of police officers honorably do their jobs just as this song describes.

  21. S.... M....

Have not heard this for many years...thanks for posting...

This song can't be about Chief Wiggum.  Too incompetent, sitting around, eating donuts.

    b.... ....

James Pankow has a brother that USED to be a police officer somewhere..........

Maybe this song is about him.

    b.... ....

So Robert Lamm wrote a song about JP's brother?
    Doubtful.
    Extremely doubtful!

    b.... ....

I thought this was an otherwise, innocent song about a bobby on the beat, in an otherwise dangerous city.

    b.... ....

    borgduck The Chief Wiggum??😂😂😂😂

I love most policemen. Have always been attracted/drawn to them even though it's not the life for me at all. We're like polar opposites we are polar opposites in some ways, but when I'm with a cop he and I always get along really brilliantly well. They make me feel safe, but like everything these days and it always was that way for them it's a sad life. A very harsh existence to have to deal with seeing crime and poverty everywhere. Bless them. And bless Chicago for this beautiful song.

  24. d.... ....

Such a fine ode to the Force.  Stay safe and as was once said:  "And let's be careful out there!"

  25. r.... ....

One thing that Chicago is known for is fabulous "layering" of multiple horn parts.

That is that if they tried to duplicate while "live on stage" EXACTLY what you hear on the albums they would need as many as 8-10 different horn players on stage during certain songs.

For example with the song "Beginnings" there are 6 different horn parts playing after the Bass Guitar solo (2 trombones, 1 alto sax, and 1 trumpet playing the chord part while there's an alto sax trumpet duet playing the moving countermelody).

In "Long Time No See" there are 2 or 3 flutes, at least 2 saxes (playing the 3 note phrases), and at least 1 sax and one trumpet playing the lead melody in the middle of the song where the horn break comes in.

And let's not even talk about how many different horn are playing during the end of "Mongonucleosis" or the last chord of "Fancy Colours".

Hell, even "The Road" starts with 1 sax, 1 trumpet, and 1 trombone, and then alternates with either 2 clarinets an octave apart or 1 clarinet and 1 flute an octave apart.

    r.... ....

I saw the original Chicago three times and they duplicated the horns just fine!  Have you ever seen them in concert?  Where are you getting your information?

    r.... ....

They did fine on stage, but what r5t6y says is correct.

  26. K.... ....

Have always loved this song. Sexy horn arrangements.

  27. G.... ....

What a terrific horn section; they're truly the greatest of their era.

  28. d.... ....

    What a great tune!

  29. r.... ....

this is a great song my favorite
