Chicago - Mississippi Delta City Blues Lyrics

I've got a smile
That I put on
When I'm not at home
When I'm not alone.
But it is so hard
To make that smile
'Cause I know I'll be at home
And alone in a while
And if I look in a mirror
I see my eyes start to tear
I can't help but cry
Since you said goodbye
I've got to hide
What I'm feelin' inside
Can't let them see
How you're hurtin' me.
So I guess that's what I'll do
Won't let them see through
Won't let them know
That you could hurt me so.
I've got a laugh
That I put on
When I'm not at home
When I'm not alone.
But it is so hard
To fake that laugh
When my insides are cryin'
And my heart's torn in half
And all the music I hear
And things I valued so dear
Make me feel so blue
They all remind me of you.
(Now) What can I do
(Now) That our love is through
And my purpose is gone
Still I got to live on.
I guess that's what I'll do
I won't let them see through
I won't let them know
That you could hurt me so.

Terry , Pete , Danny and Laudir could of formed their own group .

The Man's Soul is on Fire!!!

Terry Kath has to be one of the most under-rated guitar players of this era.  He was a phenomenal rhythm guitar player (the best I've ever heard - example: strumming at the end of "What's this world coming to?".  Jimi Hendrix proclaimed Terry Kath to be a better guitar player than himself in Guitar Player magazine.  He is still unsurpassed on some of his lead guitar parts (example: "Make me smile" solo).  His tones and wha playing are still undefeated to this day (Genius - example: "Woman don't want to love me" - tank tone with wha)...

    Cross-cultural music?

The early "prototype" versions of "Mississippi Delta City Blues" from '72 are musically more impressive than the 1977 "final draft." I've always been partial to the Live in Japan recording myself. Chicago's incredible original rhythm section (Kath, Cetera, and Seraphine) really shine on that one. Peter, in particular, SHREDS it on bass! It's positively Funk-tastic! :-)

    Tremendous song!

Dweezil Zappa has Terry Kath listed as his #1 of his top 10 favorite guitarists and lists this song as an example of Terry's fine playing. Here is the quote from Dweezil's site: "1. Terry Kath- This man was simply the best guitarist in the world. A full-forced powerhouse of energy. Just as good as, if not better than Hendrix. Terry could play blues, jazz, and all that feedback stuff people love Hendrix for playing. Not to mention he had a superb voice. It's tough to say whether or not he'd still be playing with Chicago if he was still around today, but one thing's certain, the group certainly lost it's soul and became rather boring after Terry's death. Look up "South California Purples", "Mississippi Delta Blues", or just about any early Chicago song for proof of his outstanding playing."

Jimi would have agreed! (and did)

Spot on. Terry was my first guitar hero. Chicago lost its soul after his passing. RIP :(
