Cher - All I Really Want To Do Lyrics

Now I ain't lookin'
To compete with you
Beat on, cheat on, mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy, mystify you

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

Now I ain't lookin'
To fight with you
Frighten you or uptight you
Drag you down or drain you down
Chain you down or bring you down

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

I ain't lookin' to block you up
Dock or rock or lock you up
Analyze you, categorize you
Finalize or advertise you

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

I don't want to straight-face you up
Race or chase or track or trace you
Or disgrace you or displace you
Or define you or confine you

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

Now, I don't want to meet your kin
Make you spin or do you in
Or select you or dissect you
Or inspect you or reject you

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

Cher All I Really Want To Do Comments
  1. O.... S....

I think Linda Ronstadt would of just knocked it outta the park had she sung it.

  2. R.... y....

    Thank you!

  3. G.... S....

According to Wikipedia, Roger McGuinn said they liked Cher's version so much that they just turned their single over. Smart move, because the song on the B side was Gene's I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, demonstrating that the Byrds weren't solely dependent on Dylan and had original material.

  4. J.... C....

I dunno which version is the best Bob Dylan Cher or The Byrds? The three are good although I would have liked that They'd have recorded it togheter.

  5. T.... T....

Sounds like Sonny singing in there to me! Why would Cher try to sing that low? Hahahahha

  6. C.... M....

Bob Dylan wrote this song. Not bad Mr. Dylan

  7. R.... D....

This is, without a doubt, Sonny and Cher. "Beat or cheat or mistreat you" is Sonny's first line. They exchange every other verse. Cher, of course, sings the chorus solo. And beautifully I might add. The only reason I can think of for this deception is that Cher may have been signed as a single for Liberty Records while Atco had the rights to Sonny and Cher as a couple. And this was the single they wanted to use to launch Cher as a solo act (even thought it was an obvious duet). No one seems to have noticed obviously as Cher has been credited since '65 at the sole vocalist. The proof is their live performance of "All I Really Want to Do" on their TV show (also viewable here on YouTube). Sonny's verses are plain to see.

  8. R.... B....

Sounds like an outtake, not the popularized single version, and not nearly as good.

  9. J.... O....

    It's even better sober

  10. B.... F....

Sonny & Cher's first big hit.

    B.... F....

Its Cher singing every line if u can believe that.

    B.... F....

That would be "Baby Don't Go".

  28. K.... J....

    I had this album :).

  29. S.... ....

This has The Wrecking Crew written all over it!

  30. J.... ....

Cher has the best voice ever!!!!!!!!!😀😀😀😀thanks 4 posting!!!!!!!!😀😀😀😀

    J.... ....

    She sounds like a man.

  31. G.... B....

Sonny doesn't sing with Cher in this song that's Cher all the way though it this was her first solo in 65.

    G.... B....

Her first solo record was "Ringo i Love you" under the pseudonym "Bonnie Jo Mason" circa 1964.

    G.... B....

@alexe. the real Cher did not have a deep voice.

    G.... B....

miss havisham 1- she’s still alive 2- she’s a contralto, which means she has one of the lowest female singing voices. this isn’t a duet

    G.... B....

    @64JBran Not on this version

    G.... B....

@Bill Ferron but not this version

  32. l.... ....

My second favorite Cher song! When I was a kid, the manager at the video store I worked at smoked me out and we listened to this album and I have loved it ever since.

    l.... ....

First Song I ever went nutz over~

    l.... ....

By any chance, would you know the reason why the b side to this song was never added onto that album? I'm bewildered why "I'm gonna love you" was never included. That's a bad as song!

    l.... ....

    What's your favourite ?

  33. R.... D....

Has anyone ever noticed that Sonny clearly is singing the lower register verses?  I don't understand why this wasn't released on Atco as "Sonny and Cher" when this is so obviously a call-and-response duet.  Maybe Sonny wanted to kick-start Cher's solo career on Liberty? I'm pretty sure my ears don't deceive me but only Cher and the Wrecking Crew knows for sure.

    R.... D....

I'm 65 and have followed Cher (and Sonny) since the beginning. Cher was to be the singer but she was to scared so on "Baby Don't Go" he went into the booth and sang with her on the bridge, "baby don't go, pretty baby please don't go, I love you so, pretty baby please don't go," it's basically Cher singing with Sonny as backup (and support). Now for this song it is only Cher singing. It was her first solo. Check out the video posted by ClassicPerformances2 as she lip-syncs it with Sonny just standing there. There is even one by John1948TwelveA with her lip-syncing and Sonny reacting. Hope this sets the record straight. I even seen her sing it live back in the sixties and then not to long ago in Las Vegas. Peace

    R.... D....

According to Sonny Bono's autobiography, it is only Cher singing both parts.

    R.... D....

    It's only Cher.

    R.... D....

@Ronald Vaughan Cher sure sounds like Sonny then.

    R.... D....

@Kenya H "Beat or cheat or mistreat you" is his first line. He sings every other verse. Cher, of course, sings the chorus solo. And incredibly well I might add.

  34. W.... T....

my all time favorite 'groove' song

  35. A.... 1....

    favorite song !

  36. J.... N....

This song is so fun to sing drunk

    J.... N....

I don't know you but I love you for that comment lol

  37. R.... G....

The guitar makes this song great... I love the Byrds too, but this version keeps hitting you..Great guitar work.. LA had the best studio musicians in the world..

    R.... G....

I knew that.. I was commenting on the arrangement with the LA session players... best in the world..

    R.... G....

I'm from the east coast but always loved the west coast sound especially the Wrecking Crew

    R.... G....

I'm pretty sure that Barney Kessel, an L.A. session player in Phil Spector's "wrecking crew," played guitar on this one.

  38. P.... M....

I think the Byrds are the greatest American band ever and I basically worship them, but I have to say that I prefer Cher's version of this tune.

    P.... M....

As I said somewhere else, I was disappointed in the Byrds version, being used to Cher's. Gene Clark's I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, which was on the flip side, was a lot better, and showed how adept the Byrds were with original material and they could be independent of Dylan.

    P.... M....

@Guy Sharwood Aww yes! Gene Clark was so special. Thanks.

    P.... M....

Oh man I am so glad somebody broke the ice here on that particular sentiment. I likewise idolized the Byrds back then (I was 17 ) and although I was really smitten by the jangly 12-string, there was something harkening back to the "wall of sound"* by Phil Spector that really appealed to me.( possibly because I loved that wall of sound from the girl groups from the very early 60s). It has a fullness due to that semi-wall of sound ; and Cher's interpretation is pretty damn good.( she was 19) If you hadn't said anything I may never have opened myself to the withering fire of YouTube Byrd-fan snipers.
    * I had to check, but no, Phil Spector did not produce it ,Sonny did. I did find this reference in some back issue of a magazine on Google ( rateyourmusic.com)
"Bono surrounds his hesitant girlfriend with tinkle bells, echoes, harpsichords and every trick from Phil Spector book - in spite of less than stellar vocals that at this point wobble between flat and off-key, music is actually fairly strong description of folk-pop, with songs by Dylan, Ray Davies and Jackie DeShannon."

  39. h.... d....

she may be approaching 70 but gorgeous cher can come and knock on my door anytime ! hear she is not very well at mo. and had to cancel her tour if she needs a chest rub then im her man !

  40. h.... d....

love cher but the byrds version is far superior.

    h.... d....

    I agree!!!

    h.... d....

agree about the byrds version, but not about the Cher love.

    h.... d....

I think the Wrecking Crew played on both versions. Roger Mcguinn played his Rickenbacker 12 string on the Byrds version..

    h.... d....

When pigs fly! CHER's ALL I REALLY WANT TO knocked the Stones Satisfaction out of the # 1 position in L.A. on 93 KHJ-BOSS Radio, in early July 65, The Byrd's, even though I like them went NO WHERE with their version.....

  41. j.... g....

I'm sure this is the Wrecking Crew backing her. Any body know how many guitars are in this? And who is picking the 12 string electric?

    j.... g....

@james geiger It definitely sounds like Carol Kaye on bass.

    j.... g....

I think Barney Kessel played 12 string on this. There are a least three, maybe four guitars on this.

  42. S.... ....

    The great Cher !!!

  43. M.... A....

Love this song ;) wish there was music like this today DX

  44. m.... ....

One of the sweetest Dylan covers I have ever heard!!

  45. A.... V....

Sonny's arrangement outdoes the Byrds own folk-rock version.
Unlike Bob Dylan, Cher fails to mention an aversion to peeing like her friend...

  46. t.... ....

I was getting extradited to another state in a prison van the first time I heard this song, and I made sure to make a note of it so that when I got out I could hear it again. Glad to see the not live version on youtube :)

    t.... ....

tolstoyleo sounds like a Forrest Gump story. Not that that's a bad thing. Just another life's lesson.

    t.... ....

    Amen Brother !

    t.... ....

Glad youre free in this world to hear it whenever you want. DUnno if youre still on YT but I hope all the best for you. Peace.

  47. s.... ....

    Hal Blaine on drums.

  48. o.... ....

Thank you to "Amelia1980sGirl" for putting up this song by Cher.....

  49. o.... ....

I like Cher's version of this song....

  50. s.... ....

On this day in 1965 {May 22nd} Cher performed "All I Really Want To Do" on the LA based TV program 'Shivaree'...
Two months later on July 3rd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #15 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100...
Also in 1965 the Byrds released the song; their version reached #40 on the Top 100...
Original version was track 1 of side 1 of Dylan's 1964 album 'Another Side of Bob Dylan'...
Mr. Dylan will celebrate his 72nd birthday in two days on May 24th...

  51. H.... C....

this song makes me want to walk down Laurel Canyon on a sunny afternoon.

  52. g.... ....

Bought this album from the Columbia Record Club in 1965, still have it, still love it!

  53. L.... ....

    YES!!!!

  54. C.... ....

    David Alan Grier.

  55. J.... T....

DAG made the song way better! #AdamCarollaShow

  56. k.... ....

I really like this version, but you gotta wonder about the obvious Byrds influence.

  57. H.... C....

Sonny and Cher made a dynamic team. He was a genius producer and she had (still has) an intoxicating voice.

  58. j.... ....

    and the bass!

  59. c.... b....

i love the guitars on this!

  60. m.... ....

    Awesome version of this song!!

  61. N.... R....
