I was fifteen years old during the summer of 1988 ... still remember not being able to walk into a record store, turn on FM radio or tune to MTV for more than a few minutes without hearing/seeing this now-classic song.

The 1980s were famous for the so-called ‘power ballad’. Of all the releases from the genre that fit this mold, “THE FLAME” may just be my very favorite.

This was the only BILLBOARD number one single for the band. It WILL stand the test of time.

This was one of those predictable ballads that was played on the radio ad nauseum in 1989. Hated it then. Hate it only slightly less now. At a time when progressive rock and hip hop were pushing boundaries, and grunge rock was starting to form, we still had bands like this forcing ballads onto FM radio. Thankfully, it would not last much longer. Old Cheap Trick is awesome, but The Flame is complete trash and always was. I knew that at age 15 in 1988.
