Charlotte Church - The Water Is Wide Lyrics

The water is wide I can not get o'er
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that will carry two
And both shall row my love and I

Where love is planted O there it grows
It grows and blossoms like a rose
It has a sweet and pleasant smell
No flower on Earth can it excel

A ship there is and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as the love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim

O love is handsome and love is fine
And love's a jewel while it is new
But when it is old it grows so cold
And fades away like morning dew

this is total first, i'm a huge, bigtime, lifetime JT fan. don't know how i missed hearing this song. omg jaw dropping, totally divine. then heard Charolette Church and Enya, chanel this only an angelic heavenly hosy of angels could deliver this better. And trust me i'm not a big church fan, infact far from it. this duet, touched me way deep inside my soul, if that's heaven i want some when it comes time to depart. thanks sooooo much for the share, i'm gotta shre it w/ my people.

  19. M.... -....

I think this is my new favorite song

  20. E.... ....

Words fail me in describing the beauty of Charlotte's voice.

  21. A.... S....

This is beautiful, but I think I like the one by Kathy better :)

  22. t.... ....

after nearly 9 years and the title removes the enya reference ...long time coming

  23. S.... ....

    I sing this in chorus

  24. R.... W....

    The voice of an Angel

  25. P.... L....

Kindly correct the singer's name. Enya is not part of the song.

  26. J.... A....

There is nothing Enya in this. What an idiot

  27. M.... ....

    Esta canción me relaja.

    M.... ....

    Maryland sin entender

  28. L.... J....

    nice voice

  29. T.... ....

Where was Enya then?? Singing underwater?? Lol great song still.

  30. C.... W....

Perry Fears "In my version it says right after the first verse 'I leaned my back up against an oak. I thought it was a trusty tree. But first it swayed and then it broke.'"  I think this is missing from many covers. I like it and would keep it in.

    C.... W....

+Cat Wurdack I particularly love the version by Peter, Paul and Mary which has that verse. It does add to the song I agree.

  31. V.... V....

    Captivating! Lovely indeed! Thank you!

  32. p.... c....

I'm just now learning this song in chorus. It's so beautiful! It did skip a part im learning though. In my version it says right after the first verse "I leaned my back up against an oak. I thought it was a trusty tree. But first it swayed and then it broke" but all in all this was a great recording and whoever sang it hit all the right notes at all the right times.

    p.... c....

Me too, but I learned the entire song and I sing it solo whilst the rest of the chorus transitions too new places

    p.... c....

    It's such a beautiful song

  33. H.... R....

    Lovely, lovely, transporting!! Awesome ....

  34. S.... G....

    magnifique !

  35. a.... p....

    this song is awesome

  36. J.... ....

Is this true?? Does love run out? It's so disgusting to imagine, but the older I get the less I seem to know. How far can we trust our feelings?

    J.... ....

    Never trust your feelings
    It will always ends terribly

  37. t.... ....

I think the 'traditional' one by Karla Bonoff is the best and it really ends better then this one.

  38. m.... s....

    Beautiful voice!

  39. t.... k....

    素晴らしい・・・・。

  40. t.... k....

    すばらしい・・・・。

  41. K.... E....

love's a jewel when it is new but when it is old it grows so cold and fades away like morning dew... been there lotsa times to know em all too well hahah. 2001 i first heard this and to this day it still rangs true.  love only comes in many forms but the end result is always fuckin same..

  42. j.... m....

love this sso much rock on charlottle church and enya

    j.... m....

+julianna mcelroy It's only Charlotte Church

  43. R.... F....

I'm doing this in choir at school.

    R.... F....

Me too but I'm a soloist for just this song

  44. J.... D....

    「花子とアン」でスコット先生が歌っていた曲! 美しいわあ…♪

  45. g.... g....

I am doing this song in chorus just slower

  46. S.... ....

Ah crap, my choir class sings this better in my opinion. e.e But it still makes me sleepy. c:

    S.... ....

My choir sings this to at a concert

    S.... ....

My choir sings this to at a concert

    S.... ....

This is definitely out of her vocal range....that high note just doesn't cut it. But she does have a nice voice....maybe as she matures she'll be able o hit those top shelf ones

    S.... ....

Meh if you sing in a chorus the rest cover the mess ups but it's truly just as bad in chorus as it is solo it's just a lot more noticeable when you sing alone

    S.... ....

@Delaney-Mae Murphy Yes, I have sang this alone. It may have been within my vocal range, but I had terrible breath control.

  47. s.... c....

i am doing this in chorus at school

  48. Y.... F....

    I'm singing this in vocal

    Y.... F....

    Cool me too

  49. L.... O....

    Where was Enya?

    L.... O....

    She's not on the album.

  50. M.... C....

"But when it is old, it grows so cold, and fades away like morning dew."  To me, it doesn't mean that their love for each other got old, boring, and withered away, it just simply means death.  Their love was strong and continued to remain so while they were both alive, it only grew cold because their vessel grew cold and they died.

    M.... C....

Mike Cheeriot Thanks for sharing huuu

    M.... C....

How lovely and sad.Thats the fate of us all..

    M.... C....

Yes.  YES.  Y-E-S ! ! ! !  Exactly my thinking as well.  You've said it so cogently and so beautifully, Mike. . . .

    M.... C....

I think you are right. There is no eternal love which is unconfined by death. However, until not too long ago, there were promises of eternal love which confines death.

  51. J.... L....

I am singing this with my choir too

  52. I.... M....

    She nails the pitch! Beautiful

  53. T.... ....

so true. she was trained classically hence she can sing in tune like any other PROPER singer

  54. A.... ....

Are you kidding me? Have you heard Charlotte sing live? This is definitely not autotuned.

  55. M.... N....

    I with it was slower

  56. C.... S....

    that was beautiful

  57. L.... D....

    Autotune!!!!!!!!!!!

  58. L.... D....

    Me too!

  59. T.... ....

My favorite so.g ever rock on

  60. A.... W....

This is AWESOME! I just happen to be doing this song for a competition because it was the only good one... and Enya is my absoloute favorite!!

  61. A.... s....

This was really good. I am doing this song as a solo for my choir.

  62. W.... o....

I love seeing the justin bb fragrance commercial on my iPhone

  63. c.... b....

    I love singing this song

  64. H.... M....

    きょうは、この曲を母に捧げます。この曲は、3年ほど前に村の翔龍祭のテーマが「水」でしたので、この曲をなんども聴きながらあたまをくねらしていました。

  65. G.... H....

my is the description is spanish

  66. E.... ....

Why is she singing in a semi-pop voice? Her whole appeal was the beautiful purity. Better vocal coach needed, dollface. Course we're a decade past this so it's a moot point.

  67. k.... ....

    what is the font?

  68. S.... P....

these pictures are suitable to this amazing song

  69. Z.... ....

I couldnt tell enya was in it til i noticed the full title name

  70. b.... ....

    srunning all round !
    Thanks.

  71. j.... ....

And you added Enya's name because? Seriously, I wish people would stop adding Enya's name onto the end of titles just to drag in an audience...

  72. A.... L....

    loved the editing :)

  73. b.... ....

This is so-o-o beautiful - every bit of it. And this song has been around for a long time - we sang it in the 1960's in choir

  74. j.... ....

@njacoway call me facetious but if it were written by Yoda...wouldn't it be called "Wide the water is"?

  75. O.... ....

@njacoway 'these lyrics were written by yoda'
Hmm - the 'rose' verse is maybe weak, but if you cannot respond to the poetry in the 'ship' verse, then the lack is with you, not the lyrics.

A ship there is, And she sails the sea,
She's loaded deep, As deep can be,
But not so deep, As the love I'm in,
I know not if, I sink or swim.

  76. J.... ....

James Taylor really hits the nail on the head when he sings this song. Loved it when he sang on the Boston Pops with John Williams!

  77. n.... ....

Niamh Parsons's version of this song is the definitive one in my mind.

  78. b.... ....

wow, what an amazing voice. I just replayed this song like a thousand times.

  79. S.... ....

I love it ! thanks for share, It is just beautiful... Gracias por la traducción también <3

  80. s.... ....

my favorite version of this is sung by two norwegians Kurt Nilsen and Elin Gaustad...really beautiful.....you will not be dissapointed ; ))

  81. V.... R....

Nice but have you heard Roger McGuinn's version from 1973? The first one you hear seems to be the one that sticks. Have also heard Karla Bonoff's and indigo girls but I guess I always loved Roger/Jim McGuinn and the Byrds.

  82. t.... ....

    this is very beautiful

  83. C.... ....

I remember singing this in choir!!! But I couldnt remember the name for the longest time!!!! I think I might sing this for our up coming concert!

  84. T.... ....

I am singing this in my choir class in May 2011.

  85. R.... J....

It's a song that begs harmony singing, as with Tommy Emmanuel, Lizzy Watkins & Doyle Dykes, but the arrangement here is breathtakingly sweet.

  86. J.... N....

Truly a beautiful song, and you chose the perfect pictures to go with it. Well done, it is probably one of my favourite version of the song. Thank you.

  87. l.... ....

    Where was Enya?

  88. J.... M....

    @AgroDuckDespenser excellently said!

  89. C.... M....

    @cindabear44

You cried listening to this? Give me a break. I enjoy this 'type' of music. But these lyrics were written by yoda.
