Charles, Ray - That Lucky Old Sun Lyrics

Up in the mornin'
Out on the job
Work like the devil for my pay
But that lucky old sun got nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day.
Fuss with my woman, toil for my kids
Sweat till I'm wrinkled and gray
While that lucky old sun got nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day
Dear Lord above, can't you know I'm pining, tears all in my eyes
Send down that cloud with a silver lining, lift me to Paradise
Show me that river, take me across
Wash all my troubles away
Like that lucky old sun, give me nothing to do
But roll around heaven all day

[Instrumental Interlude - First Line Of "Dear Lord"]

Send down that cloud with a silver lining, lift me to Paradise
Show me that river, take me across
Wash all my troubles away
Like that lucky old sun, give me nothing to do
But roll around heaven all day

The Great Ray and this song will live forever in the hearts of anyone who ever saw him. I watched him do it during a performance in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen in 1964. I was totally consumed by his feeling and the power of the song. The spotlight on this amazing man dressed in black with a white grand piano simply transported one to another world.
Just listening to it again nearly 60 years later brings the same emotion to my chest and tears to my eyes.

  29. M.... C....

I was 9 when I heard this song and I used my allowance to buy the tape, learned how to play and sing it by the age of 10 so that one day I could play it and sing with the great Ray Charles, but it never happened yet this is still my favorite song....

    M.... C....

How about playing and singing with him in Paradise? Think of that!

"Aw shit man, you're direct, you're no nonsense. How am I supposed to compete with that? I gotta pay all these chem bills!"

"What else? I'm in charge! The whole operation depends on me! No Fantastic,
no power. Got the whole NCR sucking on my teats and it feels so good!"

"It was easy, man! They were going door-to-door asking if anyone knew any
scientists; I said 'look no further'. They asked me if I knew anything
about power plants, I said about as much as anyone I'd ever met. They
asked me if I had a degree in theoretical physics, I said I had a
theoretical degree in physics. They said 'welcome aboard'."

"Like one time I imagined there were a code to get into a vault full of naked women. Man, how cool would that be?"

"Because I get paid, that's why: per Kilo-watt hour! Whatever the fuck that is.
That's where the NCR wants it, so that's where I want it."

"That big knob over there makes a crazy noise. Sparks come out of it if you put stuff in it and I'm learning more every day."

"That place has some crazy pre-war security system that the dumbshit NCR set
off when they took over. Killed 2 guys, now the rest won't go near. "

"Worried? Do I look worried to you? I got this under control baby, no one else can do what I do here."

"They want me to make an omelet, but I can't break any of their eggs. Know what I'm saying?"

"Say, you're not thinking about going up there, are you?"

"But you know, you do that, and maybe I'll put in a good word for them:
Fantastic's little helper. There's a reputation you can hang your hat
    on."

    - Mr. Fantastic: Helios One, Mojave Wasteland, Nevada, United States, Earth circa 2281.

There's a lot of great versions but Ray nailed it! The whole arraignment, the back up singers. This is that kind of version that grabs ahold of you and won't let go. I've heard a lot of versions but in the end i have to give it to Ray.

    @Paolo Quircio Very easily.
The Crossroads version is vastly superior

@nuberiffic What we're all hearing that's unique is the genius of the great Ray Charles! If u can't hear it then you don't have a soul!

    e.... k....

@gsdsteve So you can't even qualify a single thing that makes him great?

    e.... k....

    @nuberiffic Souless, lol!

  73. J.... B....

why does it say that the lyrics talk about the toil of a SINGER? Where in the lyrics can be found an evidence that this is about the hard life of a singer??  I'm very interested in knowing more about the meaning of the song,  but it's difficult to find information
    Thank you!

    J.... B....

@Juan Bertrand It was written by James "Haven" Gillespie who was born in 1888.

Back then the typical singer or musician worked a full day job, 10 hours plus and would typically sing on their porch or for friends more so then a paying gigs.

If you hear the heritage recordings of the early 20th century jazz or blues, they worked longer hours then would be required for a full time job now a days. Then they would sing their heart out.

Beyond vaudeville or opera, there really wern't professional singers that had only had singing as a profession.

    J.... B....

@TheRamsberg Thank u very much for the clarification ^^

  74. k.... b....

Bless you Simone. You will see him again in paradise.

    k.... b....

if you work for Ross Ellis or I must add CBS,it is difficult and you find relief somewhere .I find relief in alot,The stitch must be exact, yet do not ask me to sew or find the apostrophe.SEEYA.

  76. L.... A....

Kenny Chesney and Willie Nelson duet sing this the best in my opinion. But I'm a country girl.

  77. P.... D....

Move over Ray, there is a new sheriff in town:)  As great as Ray's version is, the new standard is Dylan, period.

    P.... D....

    @Phil Davidoff I'm a great Dylan Fan…..but I just don't think he's got Ray on this one.

  78. S.... G....

My dad loved this song. He sang it a million times. He passed in 2001 and tears are just flowing from hearing this. I miss my dad.

  85. s.... ....

Love this!  Actually, I just love about all of Ray Charles's music.....always have since I was a teen, and that's been a LONG time. ha

  86. P.... K....

Listened to Ray and Aretha's versions. Aretha is great but Ray's version just reaches into my chest and rips my heart to pieces. Plus Ray's arrangement is just pure genius as usual. I hate hearing people attack each other over it. Childish really.

    P.... K....

Paul you hit the nail right on the head. thanks!

    P.... K....

Paul Keeley This song reaches into your soul!

    P.... K....

Just listen to the Lois Armstrong version, is the best of the best

  87. N.... S....

No one can do this one better! NO ONE! You can't rate any persons feelings, and him doing this one is dripping wet with his!!! I love It!

    N.... S....

@Nicholas Smith Feelings, technical style and phrasing….Ray Charles owns this song forever

    N.... S....

I would argue that Johnny Cash did it better; but this would definitely be number two

  88. J.... D....

While there are other versions that might be more raw and earthy as it were, this version does true justice to the song and its intent. Kudos to Mr. Charles.

  89. D.... G....

I remember this from my childhood. This one spoke to my family because we were so poor. For many years in the 1970s and 1980s, I couldn't find a recording anywhere. In the 1990s I finally found a CD including this song. When I heard it again, for the first time in many years, I burst into tears. It still just breaks my heart.

  90. s.... ....

I saw Ray sing this song at the Circle Star Theater in Redwood City years ago. The tears in his eyes as he sang this brought tears to mine. Will forever be missed....

    s.... ....

I did too back in 1980s at the Circle Star

    s.... ....

Miss the circle star theater! Attended many a concerts there!

  91. m.... ....

Love ray but the killer does it better

    m.... ....

Sorry, nobody does it better than Ray!

  92. G.... S....

So soothing in a restless time!

  93. C.... M....

    Great version.
But Jerry Lee's version is better (Jerry Lee Lewis - That Lucky Old Sun)

    C.... M....

    Different, not better.

    C.... M....

Jerry Lee's version is a masterpiece.

  94. M.... ....

This is the best rendition of this song I have heard and up there with the very best of Rays. He captures the musicality of the song , just caresses the notes with the bluesy voice just seeping from him - with the highs he comes in below and the straddles and then drops off but is totally in control. Have asked my boys to play this when I croak. Someone on here said that Rick Danko sang this song because he rated it and that figures because he is another that is so under recognised and is another music man that just oozed incredible talent

    M.... ....

Excellent description of Brother Ray's style. And it's a good song for a funeral. I hope you don't mind, but I'll steal your idea and ask for this--and nothing else--to be played at my funeral.

    M.... ....

@Daniel Gunter My dad played this over and over before he went in the hospice with terminal cancer. Great words. Just posted them on twitter. Hopefully they can bring some comfort today. September 11th. God bless.

  95. s.... ....

On this day in 1963 {December 7th} "That Lucky Old Sun" by Ray Charles entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #20 and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100...
Frankie Laine reached #1 {for 8 weeks} with it on Sept. 25th, 1949 on Billboard's Best Sellers chart...
And on Billboard's Hot Country chart Kenny Chesney & Willie Nelson's version peaked at #56 in 2008...

  96. M.... H....

    this is a beautiful song
