Charles, Ray - Sing For Your Supper Lyrics

Hawks and crows do lots of things,
But the canary only sings.
She is a courtesan on wings,
So I've heard.
Eagles and storks are twice as strong.
All the canary knows is song.
But the canary gets along --
Gilded bird!
Sing for your supper, and you'll get breakfast.
Songbirds always east
If their song is sweet to hear.
Song for your luncheon, and you'll get dinner.
Dine with wine of choice,
If romance is in your voice.
I heard from a wise canary
Trilling makes a fellow willing,
So little swallow, swallow now.
Now is the time to
Song for your supper, and you'll get breakfast.
Songbirds are not dumb:
They don't buy a crumb of bread, it's said.
So sing and you'll be fed.

Cass Elliott looks beautiful in a red dress I love mama cass's dancing and her voice

  35. M.... D....

    Ma Cass--what a Voice!!!!!

  36. J.... B....

There are a lot of comparisons of Adele to Cass. But I think the one who really comes close is Laura Rogers of the Secret Sisters! Especially to the sound of when Cass was in the Big Three and the Mugwumps.

  37. t.... p....

we had mama cass.England had dusty Springfield that would have been a great duet album

  38. G.... B....

Yes Cass Elliot could always put a song across with great musicianship.

  39. M.... ....

What great harmonies and general vocals. The timbre of her voice was unique. It moves me every time I hear it.

  40. I.... T....

Cass was a smoking hot talent. Man, she had some fine, fine pipes.

  41. A.... N....

Let's be real, Mama Cass was living, breathing talent. If she were alive today she would be an icon.

    A.... N....

    Aero Nalex
She is an icon already. Thanks for knowing her talent.

    A.... N....

    She is!!!

    A.... N....

I am not sure about icon. Life moves on and modern music is so different from this.. We have good voices but what they do with them is crap.

    A.... N....

    Cass looked so pretty here

  42. G.... G....

I love my big mama so back off Robert

  43. A.... A....

<3 Also, I love Cass' dress!!

  44. S.... ....

RIP Cass, your voice was - and still is - something special!

  45. M.... T....

    very rare found

  46. J.... S....

Check out the greatest (!?) 60’s pop album that was never released, which has been uploaded as a Playlist on my Channel! It’s the duo Smokey and his Sister and their complete Columbia recordings.

If you like sixties pop at its best, with a touch of a baroque and harmony style, Smokey and his Sister is sure the group for you! Their beautiful melodies are surrounded by sublime string arrangements and other instruments, that lift the songs to an even higher level. Not to mention their brilliant harmonies!

  47. t.... ....

Soooo.. You Think you can sing? Listen...Learn... Weep..... There is
Only One... CASS... Take something from her... and go in your own
    direction....

  48. G.... C....

  49. r.... s....

One of her best recordings. Really miss her voice and sense of humor!!!

  50. L.... U....

    hermoso recuerdo!!

  51. R.... D....

1:16 she forgot she was lip singing lol

    R.... D....

I think she told Phillips "Up Yours"

    R.... D....

George Waring No, she said to Denny "one crumb".

    R.... D....

    So hilarious

  52. D.... K....

Hmmmm ... a song worth learning - and practicing - by academic faculty, eh? Dr. Donald...

  53. b.... ....

    I love Mama Cass

  54. K.... B....

    Best tone I've ever heard

  55. L.... R....

    Cass enjoy a lot Singing.,.,.¡¡¡

  56. Z.... ....

Regarding their relationships: Soon after the success of their debut album, Michelle was fired from the group after having a fling with the Byrd's singer Gene Clark. She was replaced by Jill Gibson, who performed a few shows with them and was participating in the recording of their second album when Michelle begged her way back into the group.

I believe her brief affair with Denny happened some time after..Cass was in love with Denny, so she was upset that Michelle shagged him, but their relationship quickly mended and they remained friends for the rest of Cass's life..Michelle's marriage to John ended when the group ended. Denny and Cass remained friends. He loved her, but just couldn't get over the weight issue. In his latter years he expressed regret about it. Cass wrote the liner notes for an album Denny released soon after her death. She, along with Michelle, sang background vocals on it. It was the last time her voice was ever recorded.

  57. Z.... ....

It was a typical practice in that era for groups to lip-sync on TV shows. Full bands with musicians pretended to play, even though it was obviously  mimicry when the track would fade out as it does on the record.

In the numerous TV appearances the Mamas and Papas made, they often would sing live over the recorded track. This clip is one example of how they were not afraid to show the pretense of the mimicry. In fact, they made fun of it. At an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, mid song, Michelle is seen singing into a banana like a microphone, and at a point where she should be singing, she take a bit of it! They were playfully defiant about shattering the illusion,

  58. N.... C....

Dou uma volta no tempo. Belos dias. <3

  59. u.... m....

This showcases Mama Cass wonderfully.  She was amazing.  There are few voices in pop that match hers and she was, as others here have pointed out, witty, ironic, laconic and entertaining always.

    u.... m....

+una mckillen And now we have Adele. Closest thing we have to Cass Elliot today

    u.... m....

+Mary Baldwin sorry, but no comparison.. adele i think is overrated, a belter but that's about it.. she doesn't have all what mama cass not only "that voice" but entertainer.. adele is at best the poor man's mama cass...

    u.... m....

I agree.  I find Adele, whisper it, over-rated too.  She is a belter but I find no subtlety in her voice; no nuances.  Actually, I just don't like her voice.  I read about grown men crying at her concerts and can only think it must be the over-inflated ticket prices that are causing them to blub.  I don't actually detect much emotion in her voice and it sounds samey to me.

I do like Mama Cass's voice though and I admired her as a person.

    u.... m....

Just wondering who else you'd have in that group of few voices?...(I love exploring music) Karen Carpenter? Aretha? Christina Aguilera? Any direction to amazing vocalists are welcome.

    u.... m....

Cheesteak22.  I can't resist so here is my list:  Karen Carpenter (obviously), Aretha, Tina Turner,  Linda Ronstadt (That girl could sing anything with total respect for the song), Mary Travers, Judith Durham,  Carole King, Emmy-lou Harris (the sweetest country voice ever), both ABBA girls, Janis Ian, Rita Coolidge, Melanie (weak but sweet and quirky), Laura Nyro, Dusty Springfield, Carly Simon and two outliers:  Eve Graham (late of The new Seekers but a seriously good voice) and Susan Boyle, late of Britain's Got Talent but now a dignified, beautiful singer with a soaring voice. You will probably have picked up there are no modern divas on my list.  I can appreciate what their voices can do but I hate what they do with them and how they present themselves.  I like plain and simple and standing on a stage in a simple frock or jeans and a jumper and giving us the song.  Actually Petula did that too and Sandie and Olivia Newton-John and Kiki Dee,  Any advances?

  60. E.... S....

So blown away. Cass had such groove.

  61. T.... W....

Cass could out-sing a choir of angels. The most incredible voice I've ever heard, EVER.

    T.... W....

Tony W Cass is an angel

  62. t.... s....

IT'S ALL ABOUT CASS! SHE COULD DO IT ALL! DANCE, EMOTE, GREAT FUN ENTERTAINING PERSONALITY AND OF COURSE THAT VOICE!!!!!!!!!! WOW AND DOUBLE WOW!..... SHE TRULY DOES NOT GET HER FULL DUE SHE DESERVES AS ONE OF THE GREATEST POP VOICES EVER!..LOVE HER!.......

    t.... s....

    well said thomas schmitz

    t.... s....

That’s why it’s called mammas and papas? Also a shit tonne of people can do this

    t.... s....

Exactly. She is a freaking LEGEND!!

  63. A.... P....

The very best version of this song.  The original from The Boys from Syracuse is totally nauseating in comparison.

  64. l.... ....

    Great voice.

  65. R.... T....

looks like the woman in red has sang for quite a few suppers!

    R.... T....

@Robert Devenney Your "joke" wasn't funny, choade. Process that data.

    R.... T....

All down for a good joke, but that wasn't funny. She DIED. She went on a SIX MONTH CRASH DIET. No. Not funny.

    R.... T....

    fuck your comment./

    R.... T....

Nasty. Cass would have expected it. She was no stupid girl and John Philips's attitude would have prepared her. She was a big girl but she was also Mama Cass ie kind, ironic, funny, sassy, big voice, big heart, the heart and soul of this group. If she had lived, she would have been every man's dream: a big girl with a big girl's humour in a sexy woman's body. Denny's loss.

    R.... T....

Devenney- so sad that you feel the need to make a catty comment

  66. C.... M....

    Mama Cass is amazing <3

  67. J.... M....

Unbelievable how they took an old song from a Rogers & Hart 1938 play and 1940 movie "The Boys From Syracuse" and make it a hit with Mama Cass belting out the lyrics with her great voice.

    J.... M....

    John M Probably her preference.

  68. S.... ....

Love them!! Reminds me of my childhood

  69. A.... F....

Cass was the best singer in the group

  70. a.... a....

    me too 'happy crying'

  71. b.... b....

weeping because I love them so much

  72. n.... r....

    ~ brilliance ~
    YES ☜ ◕‿◕

  73. D.... T....

Yes, and the lip sync went out when that happened....

  74. J.... D....

    Rodgers x Hart x Mamas x Papas = ~ brilliance ~

  75. t.... ....

Denny Doherty whispered in Cass' ear ... not John Phillips.

  76. j.... ....

    Beauty and the Beasts

  77. 2.... ....

I agree; Cass was just too cool!

  78. T.... ....

At 1:23 my soul was touched :)

  79. B.... M....

Possibly the best female vocalist of the era.

  80. R.... M....

May Mama Cass and both Papas bless their souls.

  81. a.... r....

  82. J.... M....

Is Cass pregnant during this performance? I think I can see it? I'd love to meet her daughter.

  83. J.... N....

    me too!

  84. m.... ....

does anyone else lament the fact that there is so little of cass to be seen in a non-singing role? surely she must have done chat shows, interviews, etc? I am interested in her the person as well as the incredible voice

  85. D.... S....

    so were you there?

  86. T.... ....

That was Denny whispering. Great performance!

  87. a.... ....

yeah that's what i heard though i think denny later said that he regretted his rejection of her later on.

  88. A.... R....

To me, it's not so much the actual song as that great voice of Cass's that is worth listening to. She had a soaring clarity that has rarely been equaled, if ever.

  89. t.... ....

haha I like how at 1:16 she turns to Denny and says "one crumb" and then turns back to the camera and sings :) haha even though her voice keeps going on

  90. V.... S....

Cass was in love with Denny, even asked him to marry her. He was never attracted to Cass, because of her weight, instead had a thing for Michelle, which the two ended up having an affair while she was married to John. When the affair was discovered it broke Cass's heart, broke up John and Michelle, and put a strain on Michelle and Cass's friendship. The group was never the same after that, and just went through the motions for the last 3 years of the band.

  91. t.... ....

Another great old song from the '30s (like Dream A Little Dream) that shows Cass at her best...what a talent. She sings the others off the stage.

  92. C.... d....

At one point, 1:16, she says something to denny, so she is not singing live!

    C.... d....

Of course that was a joke of her, she said "one crumbe"

  93. D.... D....

@fran9860 To correct you, That was Denny who whispering in her hear. John is the tall with the hat playing guitar. Also Denny did not have a thing going on with Cass. Cass had fantasies of Denny, while Michelle was cheating on John with Denny. Cass felt betrayed and left the group.

  94. m.... ....

Cass had always had a thing for Denny, which was not reciprocated...however in the early '70s long after the M+Ps broke up they did get it on.
I got the impression that maybe in later life Denny may have regretted not marrying her

  95. s.... ....

I know Sherlock! Read my comment again!
