Charles, Ray - I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town Lyrics

I'm gonna move baby, way out on the outskirts of town
I'm gonna move baby, way out on the outskirts of town
You see I don't need no-body, always hangin' 'round
Let me tell you honey, we gonna move away from here
I don't need no iceman, I'm gonna, get you a Frigidaire
When we move, way out on the outskirts of town
Whoa, you see we won't need no-body, always hangin' 'round

[Keyboard Solo]

It may seem funny honey, funny as can be
If we have a dozen children, you know they AW-LL-all better look like me
When we move, way back 'a town
Whoa-oh-oh-oh, we won't need no-body, always hanging around
We don't need nobody baby, AW-LL-always hanging 'round
Hangin' 'round
Hangin' 'round

Charles, Ray I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town Comments
  1. F.... ....

I feel this. There’s been nothing for me where I am these days, but it’ll just be me. Not taking anyone with me. No one wants to go, anyway.

  2. t.... ....

“Juice is moving in? What Jews ? No Jamba Juice . Give me my fucking eggs! Wtf is happening to this town!”

  3. B.... T....

That Sopranos Little Business Town Is Deam Changing

  4. A.... R....

Everything but fucking turkey in here!

  5. J.... H....

I had the pleasure, thanks to my sweet ass wife, to see Mr. Charles at the Hollywood Bowl, just before he died. I must tell you, I stood before royalty. To this day, I am still in amazement of this fine gentleman. God is happy with his free concerts.

  6. S.... M....

Anybody remember this song played on the Cosby Show? Classic must see! Or hear! Or both

  7. J.... H....

Thanks to my wife, who took me to the Hollywood Bowl to see this god. She's not such a bad chick after all.

  8. A.... M....

    Sopranos brought me here

Dramatic, especially the backing, but Ray Charles seems very restrained. I'm a bit disappointed. I admire Ray Charles hugely, and I like the song, but there are lots of other songs of his that I far prefer.
Have a listen to this version by Jimmy Rushing, sadly now a largely forgotten singer who deserves a lot of listening. I saw him with the Basie band c. 1960, a great singer who picked up the Basie band and got them really swinging in the second half when he came on although they'd been pretty pedestrian in the first half.

  18. N.... Y....

I want all my children to look like me..  is it in this version.. gotta listen again.  Way over produced for my taste.. rays singing and organ superb, clark terry too.. but the monster band overshadows too much of it.   iMHO..

I'm not struck on this version either although I'm a Ray Charles fan. Look up the version by Jimmy Rushing on YT. He recorded it with a smaller band, and the singing is grittier. Rushing is mainly a Blues and Jazz band singer, and not well known now. I saw him with Basie in the 60's and he was superb.

    N.... Y....

Just another dynamic, to all ready great.tune

  19. A.... P....

    Who is the trumpet player?

    A.... P....

+Armando Pace That would be Clark Terry.

    A.... P....

    thanks glennn !

    A.... P....

Good chance it's Philip Guilbeau, also in the section and a perennial Ray Charles favorite. Always wondered who the trombone player was hitting that muted low Bb in the between-verse band riff.

    A.... P....

That trumpet "cries real tears". Amazing talent all over this piece.

  20. .... ....

    FANTASTIC Song.

  21. M.... C....

More Brother Ray singing and playing and Quincy Jones  lays down another brilliant arrangement!

  22. A.... M....

"What the fuck is happening to this neighborhood?..."

    A.... M....

+Aldo Mc its over for the little guy

    A.... M....

    whatcha got ?

    A.... M....

Aldo Mc As soon as I heard the first notes of this song. I had to find it.

    A.... M....

"How do you think corporate would feel if, for the sake of argument, someone threw a brick through your window?"

"They've got 10,000 stores in North America. I don't think they'd feel anything."

Haha. Great episode. And great closing song with the great Ray Charles.

  23. J.... S....

I adore this so much!! Want to sing that. Does any of you happen to have a karaoke version of that song? I would be more than grateful!!

  24. h.... b....

Mommy was so pretty, daddy use to sing this all the time. I grew up on this stuff. GREAT

  25. T.... y....

I grew up listening to this! It was one of my Parents Favorite! LOVE THIS SONG!!!!

  26. T.... S....

IT DOESN'T GET ANY !@#$%$#@! BETTER THAN THIS ! THIS IS RAY'S GREATEST SONG ( in my humble opinion ).

  27. p.... ....

One of the KILLER arrangements of ALL TIME!!!!! Thank you so much(as always),Quincy!!

  28. s.... ....

I listened to this and others on the album way back in the 60's. It only gets better with age. I miss Ray. Thanks for posting.

  29. B.... ....

    The Sopranos ! 'Johnny Cakes'

  30. J.... D....

only 21 and i can say this is pure music, none of this crap on the radio

  31. S.... ....

i cant get over the intro and the ray groan in his solo

  32. p.... ....

Think that's Grady Tate on drums. Anybody?

  33. S.... ....

    yes yes love that

  34. B.... F....

This shit is way cool. I love how amplitude of sound plays such a feature - the audio visualisations of a blind man. Also, imagine where the 'town' would've been situated - somewhere in the deepest south.....cool. No other word for it.

  35. p.... ....

    Gotta be Quincy Jones band.

    p.... ....

Quincy Jones and Ray Charles were originally neighbors where they grew up in Seattle Washington, if you like the big band sound here of Quincy Jones horn lines you should listen to his Walking in Space album, I believe from the late 1960s to early 1970s, especially the opening number, the title track yet the entire album is great and it was used in soundtracks fot movies later...

  36. p.... ....

Phillip Guilbeau again!!! Love that mute work, Heard this tune same time as BUT ON THE OTHER HAND BABY. Played this on many radio shows of mine back in 60's. Ray's pained cry at organ solo opening makes the spine tingle.

  37. K.... R....

It is indeed Phil Gilbeau...he's superb on this and also on But On The Other Hand, Baby, a track of similar vintage to this. Both Tracks were on the classic Greatest Hits album on ABC, issued in the early 1960s, but never on CD, sadly.

Thanks for posting this: it's going into my favourites straight away.

  38. o.... ....

One of my all time favorite R.C. tunes. Sounds like Phillip Guilbeau on the trumpet. He has a unique style I enjoy.
