Charles, Ray - Empty Tables Lyrics

It's like singin' to empty tables
Or a gallery full of ghosts
Or like givin' a great big party
Where nobody shows but the host
That's what it's been like, baby
That's what it's been like all night
Without you around to applaud me
Every night's just like closing night
And I'm singin', singin' the same old numbers
'n' I'm tellin' the same sad jokes
And there's nothin' out front but mem'ries
And lot of transparent folks
So, please call, call and make a reservation
In our favorite spot for two
'cause I'm singin' to empty tables without you
Without you
Without you

  1. I.... G....

the best song in the word , on this esloly barricade

  2. J.... ....

I believe it was Albert Einstein that once shared these wise words after losing his friends to the black plague, which I believe Marius was thinking at this exact moment. "I just can't even"

  3. J.... t....

when you best friend took a sick leave and his seat is empty

  4. J.... S....

I saw Les Mis in Long Beach, nearly 30 yrs ago. This is a poor rendition.

  5. C.... L....

    Eddie Redmayne is so beautiful.

  6. C.... E....

He’s good. Brilliant piece of acting - Redmaine

  7. l.... w....

    There's a grief that can't be spoken,
There's a pain goes on and on.
    Empty chairs at empty tables,
Now my friends are dead and gone.
    Here they talked of revolution,
Here it was they lit the flame,
Here they sang about tomorrow and tomorrow never came.
From the table in the corner,
They could see a world reborn,
And they rose with voices ringing,
And I can hear them now
The very words that they have sung
    Became their last communion
On this lonely barricade, at dawn.
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone
    There's a grief that can't be spoken,
And there's a pain goes on and on
    Phantom faces at the window,
    Phantom shadows on the floor,
Empty chairs at empty tables where my friends will meet no more.
Oh my friends, my friends don't ask me
    What your sacrifice was for
    Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friend will sing no more.

  8. R.... A....

The best interpretation of this music. Insuperable.

  9. b.... ....

I just watched this with no sound. The pain and expression in his face is unreal. Excellent actor.

  10. C.... V....

    EVERY TIME

  11. a.... ....

    Guess it's time to sob

  12. M.... N....

Not people are saying he sounds like Kermit the Frog I -
    😆😆😆

  13. p.... i....

Grantaire is a sceptic with no interest in revolution. Grantaire is involved with the Friends of the ABC due to his friendship with its members and his admiration, veneration and love for Enjolras, who disdains him for his skepticism and drunkenness. He is noted to be extraordinarily ugly and a heavy drinker, and he sleeps through most of the fighting in the June Rebellion. Despite this, he eventually declares himself to be one of the insurgents and dies alongside Enjolras, hand in hand. I don`t think Grantaire is ugly in the movie

  14. p.... i....

this is the best song and after it Do you hear the people sing and after that Valjan or Javert

  15. .... ....

بكت عينِ وحق لها العويل ..

  16. K.... K....

Exactly my feelings here... So deep, so tragic, so indescribably devastating... And this melody and words are just matchless, brilliant, incomparable... And singing is with strongest expression you can imagine.

  17. M.... L....

Mental note : DO NOT watch this when your sleep deprived and ill 😭😭😭😭

  18. A.... S....

And I still shed a tear as I watch this..

  19. v.... l....

To Mr. Chow, who sacrificed for Hong Kong. For I live and you are gone. (2019)

  20. H.... M....

"O my friends, my friends don't ask me what your sacrifice was for!"
that is even more sad when you realize that his friends died for absolutely nothing.

  21. .... ....

    That's true

  22. X.... x....

I used to never cry at movies no matter what the case, but now I’ve lost 2 family members due to health disorders, my uncle and my sister’s friend who we considered family. Nobody, not even my sister’s friend’s actual family, knew that she was suffering from a health issue. It was just out of no where. I remember the night watching Hercules (because that movie will live on forever) and my mom burst in my room bawling her eyes out saying she was going to my sister’s house (she’s 25 and doesn’t live with us, but lived with her friend) because her friend commuted suicide (not what happened, but what we thought for a while because of how no one knew she was suffering health wise). Anyways, now I cry at every movie when someone dies. This movie was an emotional rollercoaster

  23. H.... M....

I cried the most for Gavroche

  24. S.... K....

Cosette was so quiet coming in and we bearly heard her.

  25. B.... P....

Cried in this part of the movie...Eddie did a good job.

  26. A.... A....

i start my first tear down, in this scene...eddie is the masterpiece

  27. P.... Y....

What your sacrifice was for? Tomorrow never come for some of us ... stand with Hong Kong

  28. S.... M....

Eddie was the Earl of Southampton in the two part drama Queen Elizabeth !st. He was very cute with long blonde hair. A great cast, alongside the once gorgeous Hugh Dancy. He was also in a film about Queen Elizabeth where he was hung drawn and quartered

    S.... M....

loved Eddie in this, there was a bit of a bromance between Essex and Southampton, although it was more likely Southampton saw him as a role model. It is this two part drama that Hooper saw a fantastic actor in Eddie in the court scene with Hugh Dancy.

  29. G.... A....

    Stand with Hong Kong....

  30. M.... ....

Michael Ball is superior in singing this song. So much more emotion than this guy.

  31. E.... R....

this literally our favorite song to sing in choir

  32. y.... ....

    There's a grief that can't be spoken,

  33. J.... P....

I get so ANGRY whenever someone says his singing wasn't good here.... They haven't a FUCKING CLUE how difficult it's to project genuine emotion (with a camera shoved at your face) and sing live at the same time. He's CRYING and SINGING at the SAME TIME ffs

  34. D.... T....

One of the saddest scenes of the movie. :(

  35. K.... K....

Anyone still got wet eyes in 2019?

  36. L.... M....

This song kept reminding me of the massacre that took place in the sit in during the revolution of sudan ,now that months passed we can not help but being hurt and killed with every story of the martyrs ..we pray for our peaceful revolution to succeed ..that our brothers died for a superior Nobel cause ..
We pray for the world for peace
    -#blueforsudan

  37. C.... N....

Y’all should listen to Michael Balls version...

  38. R.... A....

Me a weird ass theater kid in public: EMPTY CHAIRS AT EMPTY TABLES!

  39. B.... T....

Ah, this makes me cry every time! I put myself in this perspective, and although I cannot even imagine how it truly feels, I feel inside of me a grief that is understanding and I feel I am somewhat of the shadow of him.

  40. B.... B....

Marius: Phantom faces at the window!

Phantom, in his lair: ....? What?

  41. B.... H....

I remember sitting in the theater watching this scene and sobbing. He did such a wonderful job with this song!

  42. M.... L....

Hong Kong. Except the reason for the rioters is narcissism, bigotry, racism, and superiority complex.

  43. R.... T....

I still don’t get how people prefer I dreamed a dream above this

  44. J.... A....

I think that the stage version is more emotive with the apearence of the abc cafe's ghost when he sings "my friends, forgive me" and the toast with the enjolras' ghost with the candles broke me when i saw it

  45. V.... B....

Im sad they didnt have like the ghosts of everyone come in or like a compilation of memories

  46. P.... W....

a song of loss. maybe the same as for many soldiers in many conflicts. RIP all the fallen

  47. e.... ....

"But tomorrow never came" hit me so hard

  48. J.... M....

That awkward moment when you are cleaning up blood and gossiping.

  49. E.... B....

I feel like Eddie Redmayne was such a good choice for this film. While he’s not my favorite Marius and he doesn’t have a Broadway like singing voice, he brought so much emotion into his singing. His acting in this scene made me cry.

  50. E.... W....

It's so hard to pick a best Les mis moment. But this one is the one that always makes me cry

  51. l.... ....

He really does not have the voice for such a song, but then almost all of the cast were just as bad and he was not the worst.

  52. N.... S....

Third favorite song in Les Miserables... Eddie Redmayne did a fantastic job...

  53. L.... C....

Is it weird that this song makes me cry every time

  54. A.... C....

No one can change my opinion
    He's the best actor

  55. a.... ....

Watching him stumble into the room makes me cry every time

  56. O.... F....

No one could do better for this part in the movie.

  57. L.... O....

Dude everyone likes to shit on this movie bc of Russell Crowe or maybe they like to act dignified by saying the theatre version is always better no matter what but I thought this was fucking great.

  58. G.... ....

When ur favorite coworker calls in sick....

  59. J.... G....

    Truly beautifully done.

  60. W.... M....

The buzzing from the bathroom is better

  61. A.... D....

I like how they include some of Turning, not all of it, and went right into this song. (The lyrics in the beginning of this scene was that song cut short)

  62. J.... ....

When you’re the only one of the boys to survive the Area 51 raid 😢😢😞

  63. C.... H....

This scene alone made this movie one of my top 10. This is perfection

  64. R.... J....

My friend played Marius, and I went to see his performance a few hours before my senior prom. My makeup was already done. This stupid song ruined my 2 hours of hard work. I love it though.

  65. S.... I....

I come back to this song every time i have a fight with my friends. It helps me to appreciate them better

  66. M.... B....

Eddie is such an underrated and incredibly amazing actor! Love this guy! ❤❤

  67. R.... T....

I didn't know it was possible to hate a musical more than I hate Oklahoma!. How wrong I was.

  68. p.... ....

I watched the live musical a while back and this song MADE ME BAWL, legit almost had to cover my mouth so I didn’t sob out loud. “Phantom faces at the windows, phantom shadows on the floor” was the line that hit me, because they actually had shadowns and “ghosts” around him. And that hit me so fricking hard.

  69. e.... g....

i think my soul left my body watched this scene

  70. P.... C....

This is awakardly odd when alcohol strikes in.

  71. F.... ....

This is always the worst part to watch/listen to for me, because the Barricade Boys were always my favourites. It’s like a kick to my metaphorical dick every time.

  72. O.... K....

I was so amazed by his act when ive watched the movie. I knew he is good actor but his voice and singing, good lord! this guy is really cool

  73. X.... ....

Every time I see Eddid Redmayne perform I am more and more impressed by his talent. He is such an amazing actor and I feel like he doesn't get enough appreciation for his work

  74. L.... C....

As someone who has been in the show many times, I just want to tear apart his acting. He was SMILING in the beginning of the song. SMILING?!?

  75. M.... ....

What is there to say about this piece? It's on par with Ann Hathaway's "I dreamed a Dream". He conveys the emotion of losing so many friends for what is perceived immidiatly as nothing. Its a quiet piece showing the trauma of loss that is beyond words. Beautiful performance Mr. Scamander

  76. M.... C....

My school did Les Mis this past spring, and I couldn’t do the show due to schedule issues. But when i saw it, the senior that sang this did phenomenal, even was nominated for a Schuler. Out of the whole show, the part when he held out “my friends..” has stuck with me, even months later.

  77. .... ....

    промычали - провопили

  78. A.... F....

    Death to revolutionary scum.

  79. J.... J....

the way he sang “and I can hear them now.”

  80. B.... X....

Always cry at this, the lyrics hit hard

  81. M.... L....

Hii Viewers! Please Youtube Mike Lechniak for my Music Video of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. Thank You!

  82. G.... M....

He gives the most emotional and heart wrenching performance of this song ever.  In the stage production - you don't get this close to the emotion.

  83. s.... ....

I also love the part in the beginning with the ladies scrubbing the blood off the streets. Life goes on as usual, and yet many people are dead. And the ladies stop to mourn the unknown bodies lying in the street. They’re not famous or heroic. Just children without names who failed to make a difference

  84. s.... ....

I’m not sure why this song hits me more than any other song in this goddamn musical. Maybe it’s because Eddie is such a superb actor and he makes you truly feel that pain. Like a hole in your chest, that everyone you loved is dead. So young and full of life and they all died for nothing. Absolutely nothing changed and they were slaughtered.

  85. K.... P....

Eddie Redmane - you are amazing! This song gives me chills

  86. R.... w....

Just saw the musical told my girlfriend I didn’t want to but man this musical was awesome and this song tore me up

  87. K.... W....

    did you see them?

  88. L.... M....

They killed over 150 martyrs in the sit in ..in sudan @ 3rd of April

  89. L.... M....

#blueforsudan that’s what happened exactly in our revolution😢

  90. L.... L....

I came because of the buzzing from the bathroom... thank you Rachel, I can't watch les misérables seriously now 😂 and thanks for the " I can't believe she didn't come" 😉

  91. K.... M....

    2:56 Me leaving Avengers: Endgame

  92. A.... J....

The song I would ask to be taught if I won a competition to have a lesson from a professional singing teacher. Teaches me|you how to sing with emotion and power and vulnerability and get your\my audience emotionally involved

  93. L.... ....

I wasn't a fan of the movie as a whole but this scene really struck me. He could have easily veered into melodrama on this song but his performance feels so honest.

  94. E.... T....

Maybe if you put those chairs and tables on the barricade they might still be alive

  95. J.... E....

    I'm crying. It's so sad.

  96. P.... ....

and to think Les miserables is still revelant today

    P.... ....

PrincessofEllabur Well I’ve never been to France, so I wouldn’t know

    P.... ....

@Joe Whitehead but look at the news..

    P.... ....

PrincessofEllabur I’ve never seen any news about France. At least, nothing that indicates it being in the state that was then

    P.... ....

@Joe Whitehead the "yellow vests" and did your hear the news about the terrible fire on the roof of Notre Dame De Paris (a steeple got burned down)? Well for the later a lot of business, and 1% rich people donate money to the cause for "tax purposes".. but a person was quote saying

“.Victor Hugo thanks all the generous donors ready to save Notre Dame and proposes that they do the same thing with Les Misérables...,”

    P.... ....

PrincessofEllabur Oh yeah, I heard about that fire

  97. K.... J....

Every time he sings " my friends my friends don't ask me, what your sacrifice was for" I get goosebumps

    K.... J....

Keira Jones me too it’s such a beautiful yet such a sad moment

  98. C.... K....

I love this song so much even though i've never seen the film

  99. T.... B....

    I bawled like a baby.
